Which Debit Card to get to make payment for International Transactions? - Help needed from experts

Need to make fees payments for my brother.

Which debit card should I get?

Right now I have no debit/credit card.

Need help from experts lol.

I guess the most important part will be transaction fees as fees payment is around 20k every quarterly in pounds (GBP).

I won’t be using the card for anything else unless there are other good offers.

Use HDFC debit card
HDFC, AXIS, ICICI, KOTAK, debit cards work for international payments
If you are too much concerned about charges and will spend only 20k then go for union bank debit card with only Rs.100+Taxes per annum fee waived off if you maintain 5k AQB in your union bank account

@mjdominates As you must have discovered by now, the industry norm for foreign currency conversion fee is 3.5% + ST. Some premium debit/credit cards offer 2%, while a select few offer even lower rates.

You mentioned your foreign payment requirement of 20K quarterly. However, it isn’t clear whether you meant GBP 20K or the GBP equivalent of INR 20K. I am going to assume the latter.

In general, spending via a credit card with the same FCY markup fee as a debit card is more beneficial as credit cards have a better rewards structure. Anyway, since you don’t already have a credit card, let’s ignore those benefits as you likely won’t be eligible for those super premium credit cards right now with your credit history/standing.

With all that out of the way, here are my top 3 suggestions:

(1) IndusInd Signature Exclusive Debit Card

  • 0% FCY markup feeAFAIK, the only such card in India. You are lucky that I learned recently about this card from a friend. smile
  • Requires you to open an exclusive savings account with IndusInd (deposit 1 Lacs+ and maintain it). Ask for the Signature Exclusive debit card or they will give you the default one (mentioned below).
  • Card annual fee: 299 + ST
  • Upto 3% cashback. Look the card up on IndusInd’s website for details on rewards slab and monthly cap.

(2) IndusInd Platinum Exclusive Debit Card

  • 1% FCY markup fee
  • Requires you to open an exclusive savings account with IndusInd (deposit 1 Lacs+ and maintain it). Standard issue with the account; no extra annual fee.
  • Upto 2% cashback. Look the card up on IndusInd’s website for details on rewards slab and monthly cap.

(3) IDFC Visa Signature Debit Card

  • 2% FCY markup fee
  • Requires 25K deposit to open a personal savings account, but the amount can be withdrawn later. And there is no monthly/quarterly average balance maintenance requirement.
  • Card Annual Fee of 100 + ST applicable only if you don’t maintain 25K AMB.
  • Unfortunately, no spend based rewards are there. But they do have the first spend offer and 10% cashback upto 10K spend-based offer around Diwali every year (so far).

Thanks man.
IndusInd’s zero ftc is really attractive but right now maintaining would not be possible.

Will check hdfc out too.

I’m actually thinking of opening a/c at kotak mahindra. The branch near my place is one of their bigger branches and the people working them seemed polite and helpful. Any experience wit kotak mahindra? Their savings edge a/c needs minimum balance of 10k and they provide debit card with no annual charges. The FCT is 3.5% here to and if I’m not wrong, they don’t have any cashbacks or any other offers.

You can go for hdfc forexcard and than easily pay out there. If you have relationship with them you can get card free of cost and top up is just Rs. 75 per top up and get good rate for fx reload.

Most important do check if you are allowed as per rbi / fema norms to use the card for fee payment with banker
