Sorry, but that is not a very good argument. 90% of the travel we do is useless and only for unnecessary show-off and ego-boosting and totally avoidable. Luxury cars are useless. The electricity consumed by shopping malls etc. is useless. Huge television sets, cricket matches on floodlights, movie theaters etc. are useless and serve only as entertainment and are again totally avoidable. I don’t see people protesting against these. Were people never happy before movie theaters came up?

And why do you think fire crackers do not enable good living? Fire crackers make tons of kids happy. Lots of kids wait throughout the year for the fun of diwali. The indirect pollution caused by shopping malls etc. and the direct pollution caused by luxury vehicles, etc. 24/7 throughout the year is greater by several orders of magnitude than the pollution caused a couple of days in an year by bursting fire crackers.

The media simply magnifies the issue and we fall prey to it. I’m not saying that there is no harm caused by firecrackers at all. But if you protest against firecrackers then you should do the same against shopping malls and luxury cars too. Surely, it is not wrong to expect a little balance and fairness in your critique, is it?

So take up the anti-pollution, anti-luxury cars initiative na. Why say if one evil exists the other is justifiable. Corruption exist karta hai to rape ko justify nahi kr sakte hai boss.

Bhailog… all we can do is take one step at a time…that doesn’t mean we are not against animal killing or pollution in general. Presently this issue prods us to take up the action. Next time on bakrid, you guys take up the leadeship, we’ll gladly follow you and spread the message. And planting trees has nothing to do with stopping yourself from bursting crackers. The former requires your time, money and effort and the latter saves all of those. You don’t need to make a conscious effort, just have to stop doing something ridiculous… easy peasy.

My sympathies are with you dear. I’ve already stated that I’m not in favour of burning crackers, the point I’m making is let’s be equally vocal when innocent animals are killed in the name of religious celebration. I was in srinagar this bakrid and I can tell you I still can’t forget the scenes of brutality against animals. Alive sheep were lying in heaps, starved of food and water for days just to make their meat tastier. I wonder why the environment saviours are not perturbed by such things. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_evil.gif

@anthrax.ut Buddy don’t rely on others do’s and dont’s if you have desire to plant tree to make the environment good then just go for it. Also, i don’t think they care your words too, if they actually want to quit such things they have to do it own….

I cannot understand how any person tries to justify an act in the name of a celebration which causes sufferings to others continuously for two-three days at a stretch for long hours.

In first world countries like the U.S. the government takes the responsibility of putting up a grand fireworks show in festivals like the 4th of July, 31st Dec etc out of tax payers money. The fireworks are mostly the ones that light up the sky though they burst and create a noise at the end. This display is done for a fixed time say about half an hour and at a fixed venue. People gather, enjoy the display and flock to other entertainment spots at the end of the display. Some sporadic cracker bursts do occur in “certain neighborhoods” but it is miniscule in nature because of the tight law enforcement in these countries. To my knowledge bursting of any cracker by private individuals is illegal in the U.S. and you can be arrested if found in possession or indulging in their detonation.

But hey…….this is India. We all know the state of law enforcement in this country. There is also no respect for the value of human life here so forget about any animal rights. Laws are there in plenty but they are selectively used. To enforce the laws if you plan to knock the doors of the judiciary then also be prepared that firstly you might be taken for a ride by the system and secondly by the time the accused has exhausted all options available to him he is in all probability one foot in the grave.

So in the end here one has few options but to unwillingly subject oneself to these onslaught by so-called fellow Indians. Society at large remains a mute spectator and allows this to go on. Ironically these same Indians become goody good-boys when they land up in their dreamland shores of a first world country and suddenly start to follow all laws.

EDIT: The issue of pollution related to the bursting of firecrackers is a somewhat different issue. It is to be kept in mind that nature has a system to adjust and heal itself when any abuse is done for a short period of time. In this light bursting of crackers in specific celebrations might not cause that much of a harm if subsequently the pollution is brought down to normal. My thoughts therefore are that the sound pollution is more distasteful to me today than the chemical pollution, though it is obviously better if both can be avoided. For an asthmatic patient it might be the other way around.

Sir have your ever come out in your lanes or even indoors on a Diwali night, never felt that there’s smoke everywhere its kind of suffocating. So Diwali night is pretty bad in that sense.

I would have been happier and said +1 if you would have said… Besides not bursting crackers let’s vow to reduce our carbon footprint in every possible manner from saving water to switching to LEDs to using public transport and economizing on electricity. But you give a counter argument you don’t add to a decent suggestion.

That’s what I find disagreeable.

Nah, bro. Except for NJ, NY, DE, and MA, all of the other states allow consumer fireworks (3-4 other states are a little stricter on what is allowed). It is illegal in Illinois too (as I have been told) one of the states where I stayed for a long time. Never asked directly to a police officer. Never also saw anybody openly bursting a cracker in Chicago. The rules are strictly followed in the big cities. Might be a bit lax for isolated suburban locations.

You have touched upon something subtler. The very reason I mentioned little babies, senior citizens and animals in my very first post is this. I have observed how these beings suffer because of the noise. I got to observe rabbits once on a Diwali day. The jerk they would give in reaction to each and every burst of crackers. Just to see how helplessly they would remain in a corner gripped with fear the entire day! Heart-wrenching! https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif
You won’t hear the sound of any birds, either. The Hindus are not concerned about those crows which they worship as their ancestors. And I’m sure cows are no exception. GUYS

What an EXTREMELY GOOD FUCKING USELESS DEBATE

And I feel I should contribute my thoughts here. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_biggrin.gif

I have seen my grandma cry with pain whenever crackers exploded…

Seniors blaming those nasty little fuckers…

Because they can’t take it anymore.

The pain is massive. And I seen that first hand.

And then, I have also seen the joy of those little kids bursting these crackers…

In fact, I was one of those kids that gave no fucks during diwali…

Motive was to make myself happy.

That’s why I gave zero fucks.

And then, with age, I see why it makes absolutely NO FUCKING SENSE to burst these fuckin crackers…

Yet, that doesn’t stop OTHERS from doing what makes them happy, right?

As far as pollution goes, fuckin deal with it.

The world is ending.

Humans are monster.

If you don’t burst crackers, someone else will do something so awesome that it affects the world…

I have been on a spiritual journey before and all I can say to everyone is this:

You cannot fix this world…

Humans learn, innovate, and destroy…

That’s the circle of life.

You have to decide what you want to do:

Whether to learn… innovate, or fucking destroy…

In short: I take no fuckin sides. Do what makes you fuckin happy. And do it regularly. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_wink.gif
