Burning promotion budget for relatively short term to capture market share / aggressive customer acquisition given long-term mkt size and potential growth of this business combined with people with deep pockets willing to bet on it:)

Valuation of companies, esp of e-commerce type, probably is closely linked to no and type of user base… with the underlying assumption that in long term if this could be sustained, it would lead to equally huge profits as well!!

The big bets are by players-and deep pocketed investors behind them- like Foodpanda/ola, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber eats, …

Individual restaurants are common and most are small (restricted to small city). I do’t think they would be much interested in giving discount of anything beyond 10% even if additional business provided by these aggregators …

So my view is its FP types and their investors who are driving such promotions due to mtk demands and competitive pressures. Most restaurants would be just giving them their agreed commission, while few special partners may be willing to give extra 10-15% to build relationship and work together to drive customer acquisition for longer term…
