“We’ll show you how to deal with snobbish iPhone users!”

Arguably the most popular phone on the planet today… is the iPhone! Made by Apple and updated every year, the iPhones are owned by millions and liked by billions. But as mommy says… nothing in this world is perfect! If you see someone bragging about their iPhone again -here are a few things that you can say to tease them.

NOTE: The article is a light-hearted piece of literature.

“Share this image with me over Bluetooth”

The new iPhones are chalk-full of features – right from 4G, NFC to even 3D Touch… but what about Bluetooth? While iPhones do have Bluetooth… they have their own issues. Apart from peripherals, they can only connect to other Apple products! Which means, these ‘superior’ iPhone users can’t simply share files over Bluetooth with others. PS: Even a Nokia 225 can trump iPhone in this one!

“Where’s your home screen dude?”

iPhones run iOS, and iOS is a killjoy when it comes to customisations. It’s in its ninth year and you can still can’t personalise it much, apart from changing the ringtone and the wallpaper (Nokia 225 again!). And if one compares it to Android, the mockery could be merciless. There are no personalised home screens or lively widgets or any support for adding a new launcher.

“Where is the second SIM slot?”

Though Apple stands for incorporating features that users want, it doesn’t always do that! While things like multi touch, video recording and even 3G were pioneered by iPhones before most of its peers, they still doesn’t support more than one SIM card. So in case you want to use your business number along with a personal one, Apple wants you to buy two iPhones! And… Nokia 225 scores again!

“Why can’t you simply connect this to my computer bro?”

Because he can’t! Though known for its simplicity, the iPhone kinda makes it tough to share files from a computer. While other users can simply plug in their phones into any PC and start sharing files instantly, the iPhone user will first need to download and install iTunes on your computer, then set it up for a while and then only then he’s allowed to share content – that too in a very limited fashion. Unlike Android and Windows phones, you can’t see the files and folders and iTunes isn’t even available for the Linux operating systems!

“Battery low? Need my charger?”

While most Androids, Windows, Blackberrys and even some feature phones use the standard micro-USB port, iPhones are different. Rather than simply connecting to any available charger, they have proprietary ‘Lightning’ connectors. This one too was incorporated a few years ago which means, older iPhone chargers too don’t work on new ones! Oh…and the Nokia 225 uses a micro-USB port. Just saying!

“You know, you could have bought a…”

Smartphones may be premium, but iPhones are just expensive. For instance, the highest-end iPhone 6s Plus was launched in India for Rs 92,000! The easiest way to bug an iPhone owner is to remind him what all he could have had at the price of a meagre phone. A foreign trip, a helicopter ride, a motorbike and a even a plastic surgery! Yup… make them aware that all they spent their money (or kidneys!) on was just a phone. Interesting fact: one can buy 30 Nokia 225s at the price of an iPhone 6s Plus.

“Have you heard of Nokia 225?”

After reading this article, you sure must be intrigued with the Nokia 225. It is a basic feature phone will cost you around Rs 3,000. In relation to this article, it has a removable battery, SD card support, dual SIM and FM Radio – all of which the iPhone lacks! Also, it comes preloaded with some popular social networking apps and games (0uch!). Do tell the iPhone users about this ‘smarter’ phone!

Those were some things you can use to annoy any iPhone user. So the next time you see one who keeps pushing his iPhone in your face to show off, you know how to tease him.

After not-so-popular Hangouts, why Google is working on new smart messaging app

By Naina Khedekar /

Most of us woke up to the report about Google working on a new messaging app.  The new messaging app will be smart and intelligent. It will leverage on Google’s artificial intelligence technology to offers chatbots that will message like a real person. Users can ask questions related to weather, news and images, and the chatbot will respond.

Google has been sprucing up its ‘Google Now’ digital assistant that answers queries, but the company knows how essential it is to take on messaging platform.

Facebook M

Facebook M is the prime reason why Google is building the new messaging app. While leading companies like Apple, Microsoft and Google have their digital assistants, Facebook decided to play on its strength and integrate the assistant within its messaging app.

Facebook leads the pack with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, which have billions of people connected. Moreover, M will be a hybrid backed by a team of Facebook employees with customer service backgrounds, called M trainers, who can also make travel arrangements and appointments. This means, it can further give a push to marketing and customer service sectors, and eventually help the company earn revenue. This has compelled the company to build a similar integrated feature, and others could also follow soon.

Hangouts was never good enough

When the search giant launched Google Plus, company’s yet another attempt at going social, Hangouts was the only feature that grabbed some eyeballs. Google tried to bring everything – phone calls, SMS, messaging and video conferencing – in one place. But that didn’t really work well to attract audiences that seemed more inclined towards WhatsApp, WeChat and others. In fact, late entrants like Facebook Messenger and Hike also seemed to have taken a leap forward.

Going by the most recent figures, roughly 900 million people are now using WhatsApp, the messaging app Facebook bought for $19 billion in 2014, and another 700 million people use the Messenger service that Facebook developed internally. It should be noted that Google had also tried acquiring WhatsApp for $10 billion. Another comparatively new entrant, Hike, revealed 35 million registered users in September. WeChat dominates the China market.

One of the problems was its association with Google+. Google eventually separated Hangouts and made it a standalone app. The company even went an extra mile by allowing users to send Hangout invites to those without Google account.

Leisure vs work

Google, with all the best resources in its tow, hasn’t been able to build a good social or messaging app. This also explains its failed attempt at buying WhatsApp at $10 billion, before Facebook acquired it for $19 billion. When it comes to Facebook Messenger, WeChat or even WhatsApp, the apps are usually associated with leisure. Slowly, yet steadily the professional groups seeped in. On the other hand, Google’s messaging service is associated with emails. Users usually prefer to see people from their contacts list rather than their Gmail accounts that are mostly associated with work. GTalk was suddenly replaced with Hangouts and most people started finding it very confusing. Moreover, Hangouts doesn’t show who is online in your phone contacts list, and that is yet another drawback.

This becomes a differentiating factor when it comes to other messaging apps, here. There is no association with SIM, something most users are looking for in the age of smartphones. Facebook Messenger also lets you send a message to just about anyone.
