That’s a double edged sword, if everyone tried to switch off main around same time then it leads to voltage spike for those who didn’t or did it late.
I’m not an electrical engineer but If you don’t have good MCB installed then it’s better to be safe than sorry. Then Switch off main before 8 PM. But in summer heat it’s easier said than done.

I cannot risk home appliances, I will switch off main line and will keep lights on through inverter
Watch the video. Don’t completely turn off main line. If you can’t unplug devices then remove fuse or switch off MCB in particular room/ floor.

I don’t have inverter because powercuts don’t happen here…Last powercut I think happened like last year & that too was only for couple of minutes because some maintenance work was going on…Should I switch off the mains too ?? Some people are suggesting to do this & some against it…I’m confused on what to do… 
I also have expensive home appliances & electronics items…
