The Sweden-based V-Dem (Varieties of Democracy) Institute has branded India has having insufficient freedom of expression, while also lacking free & fair elections in its latest report. It placed India next to El Salvador and Mauritius as offenders for censoring media.
First categorised by V-Dem as an "Electoral Autocracy" in 2018, it now accuses India of being one of the "worst autocratisers." In 2022, it gave 131 countries perfect scores for 'Elected Officials' - including Libya and Palestine.
“India, with 18% of the world’s population, accounts for about half of the population living in autocratising countries,” the institute said. In 2021, EAM Jaishankar responded to the same institute's report with, “You use the dichotomy of democracy and autocracy... You want the truthful answer, it is hypocrisy.” It comes as Sweden officially joined NATO on Thursday, a process which many have criticised as lacking 'democratic deliberation.' A study conducted by Uppsala university last year showed that a majority of Swedes supported "pausing democracy" to deal with problems.

I want a country that is more content, calm, and less competitive, one that prioritizes long-term concerns such as well-being and the environment rather than solely focusing on potential financial gains. Everyone should vote because every vote matters significantly. You are not just voting for the prime minister or the party in power but also for your local MP, whose race can often be very close and decided by a few hundred or even fewer votes.
If you don't support the BJP or the Congress, that's okay. Look at your local candidates and consider who might do the best job (Regional parties are better for local development). You might dislike the Congress overall, but your local MP candidate could be someone who does exceptional work. Vote for that person, or if not, consider voting for an independent candidate. Encourage those around you to do the same.
And remember, don't let capitalism control your lives. Let's vote for a better future... 🙏🏻
