i defragmented using the windows defragmenter. avilable after right click on c drive …also i c defragment option there on mcaffee antivirus is it any good
i have never frmatted system since i bought i.e 4 years….

1) Download the free tools CCleaner and Defraggler as I recommended to make the maintenance easier. With that said, every defragmentation tool basically does the same thing.

2) Haven’t used any McAfee AV recently so I can’t comment on that.

3) Take a screenshot of the “Performance” tab from the “Task Manager” when you observe that your system is slow and post it here. https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=how+to+op...

Ugh! Why are you providing such critical pieces of information in bits and pieces and that too only when asked?!

If you are able to observe RAM usage peaks of upto 93% then obviously available memory is a bottleneck! Under normal usage scenarios like the ones you mentioned (reading ebooks), this should not happen. So let’s try to find out what’s wrong.

Here is what I want you to do the next time your laptop starts to run slow:

1) Press “Windows Key” + R
2) Type msinfo32 and press Enter to open the inbuilt System Information application
3) Click on the right side of the page which displays your system summary and press Ctrl+A to select everything
4) Press Ctrl+C to copy everything
5) Paste (Ctrl+V) in a text file and save with the filename “syssummary.txt”
6) Come back to the System Information application; Double click on “Software Environment” in the left menu
7) Click on “Running Tasks”
8) In the top menu, select File > Export; provide a filename like “sysinfo.txt”
9) Upload both of these files to somewhere on the internet and post the links here (you can use Google drive or Dropbox)

The above steps will give us basic system troubleshooting information like your running processes, their memory usage, and the virtual memory status.

Amount of installed RAM cannot be directly related to boot times. Ur storage and CPU are by far the deciding factors.

My apologies in advance if I seem a little stoic, but it’s only because I have completely disassembled many of my laptops to clean the heatsinks and reapply thermal paste so it’s hard for me to imagine problems with an HDD replacement.

I have done this a few times for desktop but not on laptop. I have an Acer Aspire One NAV50 with an Atom processor. I know how to remove the keyboard, upper cover, and external modules(HDD, RAM, WLAN) at the bottom. I have the service manual. In this manual, I didn’t find any mention of thermal paste. They mentioned thermal pads. Would it mean that this model doesn’t use thermal paste? What are thermal pads? Can they be cleaned or do they need to be replaced? The model is about 5 yrs old.

+1

For the sake of clarity, he meant the type of storage device, not its size. So a computer with an SSD as the primary boot drive will boot a lot faster than a computer with a standard 5400 rpm mechanical HDD as the primary boot drive.

Thermal pads are more convenient and less messy alternatives that serve the same purpose as the thermal paste. Purists and perfectionists still prefer thermal paste for good reasons. To be clear, they are both used to fill the microscopic gaps between the heatsink and CPU/GPU. If those gaps are not filled, air gets trapped in those microscopic gaps and deteriorate the heat conduction from the CPU/GPU to the heatsink.

Yes, you can replace a thermal pad with thermal paste. No, you can’t clean thermal pads or paste. You remove them completely and then apply a fresh piece/coat. By the way, there is only one case where thermal pads are actually necessary but it’s not applicable to your situation and I don’t think it will be apt to discuss that here.

If I open and clean the little fan, can I reuse its thermal pad or do I have to buy new ones.

You should have tagged me for quicker response. I saw this by chance.

Anyway, the answer to your question is a big NO. Once a heatsink is separated from CPU/GPU, the thermal pad or paste should always be fully replaced. If you are comfortable doing this yourself, visit your local computer market and buy either the cheap, but good enough, Chinese thermal paste (~Rs.25) or get a premium product like Arctic Silver 5 (~Rs.800 on eBay) or Cooler Master V1 (~Rs.300) depending on your budget constraints and future usage requirements. Cooler Master V1: http://www.amazon.in/Cooler-Master-Value-Therma...

Keep in mind that applying a thermal paste is both an art and a science. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

So I encourage you to watch as many picture/video tutorials as you can until you understand all of the nuances.

bro u misunderstood the essence of my reply

i was also saying same thing whic u are

ram has minor impact on performance

but ssd can help a lot

and that 12 seconds is when my lapi only supports sata 3gb/s while ssd is 6gb/s

if lapi had 6gb/s support then things would have been much faster

and my cpu is a dual core one

lapi is 5 year old
