Reliance CDMA upgrading to 4G/LTE

I don’t know whether to cheer this news that hit the counters in first week of April or not. But Reliance CDMA is upgrading its network to 4G which may mean end of road for CDMA 1X and EV-Do services and its a bad news for users like us who are using OMH sims and unlocked dongles/phones to use cheaper Internet plans of CDMA.

RCOM had neutralize their CDMA spectrum in 800/850 MHz band recently by paying Rs. 5383.84 crores to DoT for 16 circles after which they are free to use it for any technology. CDMA users incl. me are getting SMS that network is being upgraded to 4G and users of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and UP (West) will be upgraded to 4G network followed by all other circles.

SMS from Reliance-

Dear customer, we are upgrading CDMA network to 4G shortly. As a preferred customer, await out invitation to experience the BEST4G network.RCOM
RM- Reliance
08/04/2016 04:15PM

I talked to customer care and they told that 4G testing is going on in all these 4 circles and from May onwards all users will be upgraded which would means that no network for CDMA voice or EV-DO datat users after that and only those with 4G handsets with support to LTE Band 5 (850 MHz) will be able to use. Some example of these phones are Samsung A5, J7, S5 iPhone 6 and there are many. But all others who are using unlocked dongles are at loss as their phones and dongles will become obsolete.

Was enjoying constant 1Mbps speed and Rs.4GB for 246/month from more than 18 months ad sad now. But they told their 4G plans will be same as what they were providing to CDMA/EV-Do OMH users.

I will keep updating happenings here.

Please don’t confuse 4G LTE with GSM or CDMA as LTE can work on many spectrum bands and phones with LTE support to these bands can work whether you have a GSM handset or CDMA with 4G support.

This is not the end of CDMA/1X and RCOM CDMA isnt upgrading to GSM, its just that 4G LTE is added thats it
Remember Verizon, Sprint in US offers 4G LTE on a CDMA sim

Actually that’s what we are hoping for that they do launch LTE but don’t close down EV-Do.

The worst thing is even if they don’t close CDMA and use 1X network which is called 2G of CDMA for voice services, EV-Do which is used only for data will be closed down and for that they will use LTE.

So combination will be 1X for voice so that 4G sim users can fall back to it for calling purposes and 4G/LTE for data until unless they come with VoLTE. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

You may know that in EV-Do mode we can only use data not Voice/SMS.

btw I have Samsung J7 with band support to 800MHz (Band 20) and 850 MHz (Band 5) only for the purpose of 4G. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

When Jio will launch will shift to that.

@getready Sometimes I wonder why people always come with little knowledge?

Do you know how much spectrum Verizon and Sprint holds in CDMA bands?

Verizon- 30 MHz in 850 MHz band
Sprint- 25 MHz in sub-800/850 MHz band.

What RCOM holds is just 5 MHz which technology neutral. How can you expect a company that holds only 5 MHz of liberalized spectrum to offer 1X/EV-Do and 4G on just 5 MHz? Out of this 5 MHz they will have to use 3 blocks of 1.25 MHz i.e 3.75 MHz for LTE and rest 1.25 can’t be used for EV-Do but can be for 1X voice/sms and slow data.

I have seen many people in India give references to US/Europe without going much into dynamics of Indian market either it be telecom or anything else.

And if EVDO is shutting down completely, they shouldve stopped issuing Wipods and data cards new connections at least from 1 or 2 months back. They are still issuing them and we are getting updates that RCOM CDMA is getting upgraded to 4G. What does this mean? Data cards under 1X mode of any use?
If EVDO is really closing down, then RIM has to replace each and every data card / wipod device as they dont support 4G and all devices are non-RUIM

As of BSNL who planned to shut down their EVDO services stopped issuing cdma connections from january itself for their initial Mar 31 plan of shutting down and now they extended it until june/july because its not that simple to shut down when there are lots of consumers using 6month/1year packages

@getready Do you read the first post? I used the word “May” which in itself means whatever I said is not official as of yet. But Read ET and understand what their official statement tells you. I am not saying services will be shut down in a second. It will be done in a phased manner.

I talked to Circle Head for Haryana-HP-Punjab circle and only after confirming him posting news. But your reply just show that you are pinched completely.

As you didn’t know how much spectrum RCOM holds, you just said- “They havent shutdown EVDO so i dont think RIM will do it too.” It doesn’t matter what you think. Be practical rather than comparing US and Indian operator.

P.S- If you have only 1 liter of water and you can’t fill a 2 liters bottle completely. For that you need 1 liter more. Same RCOM requires more spectrum but they won’t get any until next auction.

@getready Have I mentioned Bangalore in my post? I talked about 5 circles onlyy where things are turning. Where did Bangalore came from? I am getting SMS on my Punjab and Haryana sim from company and CC asking to port to GSM to save the number or same cdma sim will be swapped with a 4G sim. They also told to have a 4G handset and upgrade offer will be launched for those having EV-Do dongles.
You are there in Bangalore and assuming things for other circles. When Bangalore is not on list now you need not to worry.

One more thing. Since April 8th, activation of data pack has been stopped via SMS. Whatever SMS you send like ACT MN5/15/51/94/123/246 you get reply We are unable to process your request. The calling to *367 is stopped. Only 198 working

Reliance’s CDMA spectrum has not been liberalised in 5 circles yet one of which is Karnataka. They will be up for auction in June-July. So CDMA will continue in these circles for a few months more. But ultimately CDMA services will have to be shutdown unfortunately due to practical and commercial considerations.
Edit: Even in the US Verizon plans to switch off their CDMA networks by 2021-22.

@getready Just received another SMS from RCOM on my CDMA number and they are asking to PORT out to GSM. lol

RM- Reliance

Dear customer, we are upgrading our network to 4G soon. Please switch your number to Reliance GSM before May 3, 2016. To receive UPC, SMS PORTMDN (10 digit MDN without zero) to 1900 (as per base tariff). Reliance
14/04/2016 10:03AM

Talked with CC to know whether CDMA services are getting completely stopped and they said, “as per the update available CDMA will be completely stopped and you better PORT out to GSM and we will invite you to test 4G later.” I asked whether sim will be swapped, they said, “You will get a 4G sim.”

When asked my handset and dongle will become a waste, they said, Yes, it will not work anymore and you will require a new dongle.

To re-confirm it I called my local Reliance Store and another news arrived here, He said that company has asked us to stop selling CDMA sims and handsets from April 5 which clearly indicates CDMA is getting shutdown completely.

I am disappointed now. Miss u EV-Do and 1 Mbps constant speed. When they stopped plan activation via sms I knew they will stop and now officially confirmed https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

Bro only 4 circles were left- Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. On April 6th, 2016, cabinet gave nod to DoT liberalize RCOM spectrum in these circles for the price suggested by TRAI. So they will pay up Rs.1300 crores soon to liberalize it and we know elder brother Mukesh Ambani will pay for it. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

The best I can hope for now is I will use 4G sim on J7 if plans are same or just little costly. But Rs.5 daily plan was a gem to get more data along with monthly pack. Used 20GB by paying only 200. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

As per update from them the no. will be closed if not ported to GSM. Even dongle users can sms and take a GSM sim

Actually they are right in asking to port to GSM as there is no technology available that allows swapping directly from CDMA to 4G by sending SMS. Like we sms to 121 in Airtel by typing SIM 19/20 digit sim number and or 12345 in Idea to swap sim. That sim de-activated and new 4G sim activates without any hassles. They are asking to PORT out to GSM and from that we will be able to send just an sms to activate 4G sim.

You have to understand there is nothing like CDMA 4G or GSM 4G. 4G is 4G and LTE (TD-LTE/FD-LTE) or LTE-A are its technologies currently and it can be used on various bands like in india 800/850/1800/2300 bands are being used. As 3G was an update to 2G, we were able to use it on same sim but 4G can’t be used without sim swap or 4G sim.

One more thing is told that all the 4G users of 850 MHz band will be able to use Reliance GSM network in areas where 4G will not be available but only on multi-band supported phones. Many people are confused that there exist thing like CDMA 4G and GSM 4G but that is misconception only.

CDMA and GSM both are completely different technologies. It’s not just about spectrum. In US or Japan they have very solid infrastructure for CDMA hence instead of shutting them down they upgraded it for higher speeds. In India companies like MTS and Reliance soon realised it’s not a profitable proposition to lay down EVDO REV B (forget about LTE) as one company makes the investment on infra and then others pay royalty to use their infra. India has only three players in CDMA market Reliance, MTS and Tata (only Docomo is GSM). Neither of them have enough CDMA user base to extend their services.

CDMA never took off in India and GSM always had edge over it. There were many factors like handset choice was not much and also there were numerous gsm players but for cdma only 3-4 were there and people love flexibility. The deficiency of sim free handset and dongles also made it flop. In all aspects CDMA is better and secure than GSM but yet in India it face avoidance.

Personally, I feel that CDMA is better technology but Reliance and Tata did many bevkoofiyan .

Yes, technically CDMA is superior. The maximum data speed over CDMA is 3.1 Mbps which was equivalent to HSDPA speeds. Hence, the CDMA companies didn’t have to pay a single paisa for 3G speeds neither did they have to spend a paisa over laying infrastructure for providing broadband. But still they charged the same tariff in India as over 3G network. Making huge profits. Now Reliance has already announced major tariff cuts for it’s 4G data service making them maintaining their shrinking CDMA (customer database) not a profitable proposition. TRAI also has realised it’s mistake to let go the huge auction opportunity they passed over and now they are not keen not doing that again. Soon new auctions for 800 mhz will require the old CDMA players win the auction to continue their CDMA network. Again not a wise decision for them instead they will likely expand their GSM/LTE services on the 800 mhz band.

With EV-Do Rev. B max. achievable speed was 9.8 or 14+ Mbps. They did upgrade network at some places but still there were less takers. You said their tariffs were same as that of 3G and they made huge profits as they didn’t had to pay for spectrum as GSM operators did for 3G. This is totally wrong. Now see why. CDMA operators offered 20-40GB @ Rs. 999 to 1199 which no GSM 3G operator ever gave. RCDMA data offer for CDMA users were 94- 1GB and 246-4GB sibce 2013 and same way Tata offered 4GB at EV-Do Rev. A speed for Rs. 246. At same time 3G operators charged 246 for 1GB. Between 2009-2013 Reliance provided 30GB of data @Rs. 2999 for 6 months. But still they were not in profits as most of the users were with GSM operators. Why in 2007 RCOM took GSM spectrum was only because they were not able to attract users to CDMA due to CDMA’s own limitation which I mentioned before also.

The amount of spectrum held by CDMA operator was just 15% of what other GSM operators were holding in different bands 900/1800 MHz and then there came 2100 MHz for 3G. CDMA operators never get 1900 MHz band to expand. In some circles they just had 2.5 MHz and DoT even after 10 years didn’t gave access to airwaves in many districts to Tata.

GSM operators held and used their spectrum for 20 years for low cost and then auction started while CDMA 20 years are yet to complete. If GSM operators were allowed to complete their period for 20 years then why ask CDMA to pay more. COAI then started crying by saying CDMA operators were profited without going into fact that 95% of users were on GSM in India. So they can’t be blamed over this fact.

As far as huge profits are concerned if that was the case with Anil Ambani’s RCOM, Mukesh Ambani wouldn’t have paid fees for spectrum liberalization which he did recently. RCOM failed to fund expansion of GSM/3G network due to heavy losses. The 800 MHz spectrum valid till 2022 and 2027 in some circles is now actually owned by RJio.

Same way Tata didn’t make profits from CDMA although tower infrastructure required for CDMA was less due to 800 MHz band but when you fail to get users, you can’t run a business. MTS knew that CDMA is failing in India but they participated in 800 MHz auction so as to recover the cost they invested before their license was quashed by SC and they decided to merge with RCOM at right time. MTS spectrum is already liberalized and valid till 2032.

RCOM has taken a good decision by first liberalizing spectrum for remaining period and now bringing 4G using the same band. Although this band can cover more area but higher speeds are not possible on it. With MIMO also you can achieve max. 36 Mbps and not more than that. For true 4G speed 2300 MHz is most suitable but it has coverage problems.

Mukesh Ambani’s RJIO holds 5 MHz of spectrum in 800 MHz band for 10 circles which they won in 2015 auctions and is valid till 2035. Also RCOM bought some spectrum in 2015 like in Haryana, Punjab they got 1.25 MHz which is valid till 2035.

Next time when they need to renew it, RJio will win that and by then RJio will be running RCOM’s operations completely. There will be no hara-kiri as others operator won’t go for 800 MHz ever as they will look for 700 MHz band rather than going for 800/850 MHz.
