@Isaac pointers in this topic and prospective buyers https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif for your GC might help you !!

@kool you already have a narrowed down list now. depending on depth of your pocket
buy any OR ALL of those things you spoke of.

more than the green channel / red channel issue, be ware of the warranty coverage if something emotionally precious is being brought in.
Many brands are infamous for dishonouring ‘their own’ International warranty. As in, may top rated brands might sell something in one market by promising Intl. Warranty, but then have Fine print T&C to exclude some territories on one pretext or the other.

Even worse, the Intl. warranty is valid, but the brand’s Indian arm refuse to honour it. Again they do so citing various local clause or cooked up terms.

that is how some dear Dimers avoid or rethink purchasing flat screen TVs or pineApple products ! https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_wink.gif

have a look at http://www.desidime.com/forums/dost-and-dimes/t... too if you feel like

No. no customs charge will be levied on most items, artefacts leaving Mainland America by the Americano customs https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif while boarding.
but to be safer, avoid procuring weapons grade Plutonium or such thing.

you’d better be worried about the customs in India, after he disembarks.

recently, even the limits of duty free shopping and INR currency carrying limits have been increased.
so tentatively even items on his person in a single trip, of up-to 25-30000INR equivalent ought not to attract the normal duties otherwise paid.

but in the hamaam mei sab nange scenario that the Customs-passengers (Tom and Jerry) fights..
if things come to it, better to give a wrong declaration. [sorry to be saying this]
but sometimes even for borderline cases where total value (according to their own valuation methods) goes even 800-1000INR above
Indian customs make the traveller feel like a thug, culprit and the humiliation is worse than having to pay the duty.

so,
if you are likely to take your friend’s favour for a high value item, and trust him in carrying things right;
you can consider the option of ‘box open’ import.
that is, let the electronic item/gizmo be packed as if it is an old, used article of household use and being brought under ‘Transfer of Residence’ (case specific)

you can ask the friend to pack the original box/carton in some other bag.

@kool Out of all the items you listed, DSLRs still have quite a large price difference so that would be the most sensible item to import. But I won’t suggest you to buy something just for the heck of avoiding customs duty. Figure out what item(s) you really need or want, do a price comparison between the price in India vs the price in US, and then decide accordingly.

Update to address the last question: No, your friend won’t be paying any customs while leaving the US. On the flight to India, he will be given a customs declaration form, where he may or may not declare anything. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_wink.gif

I availed ‘Transfer of Residence’ when I moved back to India. And I can tell you with certainty that TVs, whether old or new, are not totally exempt from customs but are eligible for a reduced customs duty (~15%). The same applies to a lot of other items (don’t remember the list). Moreover, another clause that people don’t discover/know until they go through the process is that only one piece of each item (e.g. laptop) is allowed duty free under ‘Transfer of Residence’.

With all that said, I doubt that OP’s friend is moving back to India for good and whether he is even eligible for it. Even if OP’s friend is eligible for ToR, I highly doubt that he would be willing to let go of this huge duty break for the next 3 years just so OP could get a couple/few electronic items duty free.

You get good quality proteins and supplements at a good bargain in US.

Unlocked mobile phones are just around 10% to 20% cheaper in US and have no valid warranty in India so avoid!

Most laptops are priced almost the same when compared to decent deals you get here in India. Very few brands provide international warranty so do watch out. The ones I know of are Apple and Dell, Lenovo too I guess.

Get some good chocolates, you get amazing ones and at a much better price than in India.

Fancy electronics, more like the ones for enthusiasts are good. I got a Sphero BB-8 last week, Jaybird X2 wireless earphones and Parrot Zik Z3 Bluetooth headphones. All of these are much cheaper in US than in India.

If at all you like stationary then you get some really cool stuff at a good price in US. Of course, if you are looking for normal stuff they will cost you cheaper in India itself.
