Thanks Naman! Yeah of course bud, just attach your old TV and a keyboard to this and you have a running computer, plugin your net cable and surf the net, the possibilities are many.
Its actually a mobile which is not covered with body so may be very usefull for Mobile developers, people who are working/ Soltution development around mobile technology
It’s not just the developers, even people who love to fiddle around with techno stuff will enjoy this toy.

Only for developers.
I’m using 512MB model for last one month. Can’t recomend to all.
One will need more things, other than the board itself.
P.S. element14 is OOS atm. Ordering now, will result in a delivary only after 3rd week of Jan.
in my opinion if you are not a developer then you are far better off buying MK802 III S
It is NOT for developers alone. The PI is a board which when connected to a Monitor, Mouse and Keyboard becomes a full fledged PC. In that line, it becomes the lowest priced PC currently available. Connected like this it becomes the best Entertainment device ever available. Since it can run Linux distros, it can play ANY video/audio format available. Connected to a TV and a Portable HDD, it immediately extends the capabilities of the TV 10 fold.
Most TVs and video players are limited in the video formats they can play. They usually play the previous gen codecs, but have no ability to get software upgradation to play the next gen formats. With the Pi, since the software is always upgradeable, it will always be the latest. It can also be used as an Internet device.
Thanks, OP for this. Been looking far and wide for a deal this good. All Ebay stuff seem overpriced. In my workplace, a govt office, we have monitor, mouse and keyboard connected to a server. Like most govt stuff, the server developed some issues and has been offline for a few months. I needed Internet connectivity, but was wary of lugging along my laptop as I have to carry it on a few trains. The Pi is perfect as the only stuff that I need to bring are the Pi and a Wireless modem router/3G router, plus a HDMI-VGA convertor. I have the rest of the equipment at my workplace.
Dimers, dont let anyone misguide you. The only thing you need to run it, are a basic knowledge of Linux insomuch as needed to install Debian. In fact a Debian setup is too simple nowdays-You choose a few options and the location of your sdcard. You DONT need to be a developer. It’s like saying you need to be a developer to install Linux. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If partitioning a sd card gives you jitters, this is not for you, the chickenhearted.

i think with added components worth 1500 I can make my 40" Toshiba LED a smarter guy!… http://indusmaker.blogspot.in/2012/12/make-your…
my only question is – how do we get the OS for this ?
@BML… its mentioned that the OS is supplied on as SD card separately with the device…

you can download the the flavour of linux you like for it and bur in it onto an SD card you like… if you wanna setup a media center for example then you can install xmbc’s versian called xbian from here http://xbia…g/ or you can download the debian flavors from their own site… http://www.raspberrypi.org/dow…ds
Cheers mate!

you can use any SD card and burn on it the flavor you like, pretty much like making a liveUSB stick for any linux flavor.

Thanks a lot Joel for that amazing explaination. Yes, its a fact people need to understand that you DON’T need to be a developer to utilize the potential of the Raspberry Pi to your advantage. Even a basic knowledge of stuff is more than enough that most do nowadays, including all linux users or even those who love to fiddle around with their Androids.
And thanks a lot Joel for VnS and the Karma.

if you are a non-techie and you are using RPi then you are insulting the true potential of the little devil….
a RPi was intended for learning purpose and not as a consumer device….its meant for developers who can work on it and see what all they can squeeze out of it…you can have great fun with a RPi if you can make it do things which hitherto has not been done….
for a non-techie who is looking for a no-brainer consumer device which is portable and functional then a slew of android sticks do that job admirably….espcially the new launched MK802 III S and Uhost2….comparing them with RPi one can easily spot that advantages…dual core…better processor speed…higher RAM….internal storage….bluetooth…WiFi….google play store…and basically getting all this for around $60….
buy the product which serves your need…and also what you know you can do with it…

Thanks a lot wrongnumber.fu750 for your contribution to the thread.
Moreover, I’d like to mention for the benefit of other interested desidimers that all other stuff that you might possibly need (cables et al) to get going are available on the same website Kits’n’Spares wich is powered by element14, including enclosures, just in case you don’t want to leave the board open in plain view, or even pre-bundled packages including all the essentials. Just look through the website searching for “raspberry pi” and I found almost everything pretty much in stock.
Also they seemed to have moved the products page and added Rs.1 to the price, so I’ve updated the same in the original post.
Cheers!

So also are people who buy multimedia behemoth PCs and using it for editing MS Office docs.
Good find. VnS
better to educate those who are not aware of the new addons. Everyone learns from others and not necessarily they needs to be engineers and developers.
And as we all know that when first created, the computer itself was never meant to be a consumer device. It was like the holy ground for developers and geeks not to be trespassed by mere mortals. Glad some people thought otherwise.
There are step-by-step DIY guides available all over net for achieving a lot using the RPi. Anyways we are living in an age where so called noobs can root & flash their droids so nothing is too far out of reach.
And there also goes a saying, “You don’t learn to swim without getting into water.”
Voted up + Karma, was looking for this for so long since it was relesed but was always out of stock, will buy this now

Thank you faninencore. Glad to know it was of help!
Here’s a minor errata in final price. Maybe it affects only people outside Karnataka. Final price inclusive of tax comes to Rs 2683.
Is the hardware really good or just ok with the price?
So many views, so little response? Ah! nevermind, I needed one for myself anyways.
