Bro, you are experienced user and know how to close apps, but for normal users phone would have a left over of half of what you mentioned. Normal use WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, Chrome and normal google apps.

MIUI is a Custom ROM, so you can remove anything. If you use a US handset with Stock ROM, you would know what happens when you play with System Apks

Bro here you are touching upon system apk’s and what not that comes at much later stage . You may be a doctor or surgeon or what not but everyone needs to learn things if they don’t know it .

In order to clear your memory , Long Press your Recents Key (the Leftmost key in MI3 touch keys !! ) . This is same as pressing recents key in any android device .

You will get the following :-
https://i.imgur.com/AJIJop3.jpg

Press the button i have highlighted in red and your memory would be cleared in one shot !! Go give it a shot !! And i am sure being a doctor you know that there is difference between Crap and System apk which are clearly segregated under System section in APK’s. And not to sound rude but being a doctor of a device has absolutely no co-relation with how you use the device !

And between how did you even managed to remove the system apk’s without rooting the device ? Or you have rooted and then removed necessary system apk’s then its even more shocking https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif

Trust me, it was anything but simple on my phone. Clearly there is an issue with a lot of their phones. And it seems this has blown up in Flipkart’s face. They seem to have cancelled many orders abruptly. Maybe its because of this issue? They sure have a lot of people very pissed off…

Now I’m worried if that tray is going to open again, or the phone has swallowed my SIM for good! https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_confused.gif https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif

And this begs the question – it does seem like they know about the issue. But what are they going to do about it? What about the phones already with customers?

On another note, how are you guys checking out the total RAM usage (used/unused)? Seems its not possible to do so the usual way (Settings>apps).

This phone has 2 gigs but some serious bloat is on it. For eg. the launcher is taking up some 90+ MB! https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif Are they nuts? I’d much rather use Nova Prime or the other options suggested earlier, which is way more RAM friendly. Swiftkey is another resource hog anyway (on any phone), and it seems it cannot be updated?? The one installed is a pretty old version. Swiftkey lags even on Nexus 7. In fact its the only app that lags N7! Predictions also don’t seem to be that good. On lower end, smaller phones, where it is required most, it has become unusable. Once one of the best apps you could have, it has just about completely lost its edge.

BTW, anybody knows for sure if the Mi3’s SIM is hot swappable?

@borg few clarifications :-

1) Regarding the SIM tray issue . frankly its not an issue. If you have used an iPhone before you will realize that the SIM tray ejection is no different. If the SIm tray is even slightly loose your SIM will have disconnection issue . Agreed that it is a bit more rigid when compared to a iPhone but it is for good of the users itself. Pressing little harder auto ejects the SIM tray . For all the phones i have experienced this is not a design issue.

2) The launcher takes ~70MB . Lots of factors contribute to it. First is the UI transactions they use a way smoother than a normal GEL launcher. And there are way more UI Animations involved as compared to normal launcher. Also there is a live Security Scan app which adds to the launcher memory consumption. People assume that launcher is consuming more memory compared to a GEL Launcher. Y/es it consumes more because it has clubbed multiple services into a single Launcher service. Also you can easily reduce the launcher memory consumption by removing the Online Scan apps etc etc. Can be optimized to ~40mb.

3) Regarding Swiftkey you can easily remove swiftkey from App > Uninstall swiftkey. Swiftkey cannot be automatically updated because the swift key version already present is 4.4.xx . Till then Swiftkey was available as a different channel for Free as well as Paid. However Swiftkey recently got a massive update and is no more a paid app with complete re-design and a different business model. All of this lead to a single channel for both Paid as well as Free versions. This is why if you want swiftkey you would have to uninstall the existing version (4.4.xx) and install the latest version. Almost every other bloat is removable and those which are not removable can be removed once rooted.

4) No need to go to App > Settings to see your free RAM . The RAM manager is inbuilt in your UI. You need to long Press the recents key (the leftmost touch button ). Once you long press it you will see your RAM used and available right on the recents panel with all the apps which are in background. It also provides you the ability for Cleaning the Cache as well as running apps by pressing the button.

https://i.imgur.com/AJIJop3.jpg

also the exact reason for Flipkart cancelling order for a batch of phones is due to the display digitizer found detached in a batch of phones . Hence they cancelled a few phones from shipping and have asked users to register again !

I could not resist and decide to jab the tray once again. And this time it came off right away with a click. This is how it should have worked the first time around, but it didn’t! Took quite sometime to get it open the 1st time. Thats why I said, trust me, there was (fingers crossed that it does not become “is”) an issue. I can quite image a lot of people messing it up or breaking/scratching something while doing this. You and few others were most likely just lucky it ejected properly the 1st time itself.

I guess I would surely get rid of the security apps and stuff. Thanks a heap on throwing light on that. Will work on it and other bloat later today.

Your battery setting might be in balanced Mode. Go to settings and select battery. Under battery there would be an option that says power settings. select high performance. also make sure you clear the RAM before testing.

I have applied a lot of pressure in the pin hole.. the problem is in my opinion the sim adapter provided by them must have been stuck inside because when i press it partially (about 1-2 mm) raises up and stays stuck..

same problem here bro.. the sim slot wont open.. i applied a little pressure and the sides around the pin hole of the shell started bulge..showing the very poor quality of the material used.. Gave up after few more tries /..later saw a review by someone on flipkart having same problem.

Raised a ticket for return ..
Performance was good.. apps.. but there is a high chance that metallic finish would become ugly in few months.
Advice: wait for black model to be launched.. heard the finish and the material is slightly better.

No such problem here , yes the tray is indeed difficult to take out just apply some pressure i was skeptical at start but later saw the thread regarding same in forum and as they said went ahead and applied some pressure and it came out no bulge or anything. How does color determine the quality used in phone ? https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif

Just cos you are not facing this issue doesn’t make others non-defective.. Why do you think flipkart has cancelled some shipped orders. they wanted to check the defective pieces. Further removed the negative comment that was there which is utterly Disgusting. Asking customers to register again cancelling items after getting shipped, is not exactly flipkart first service. You got me thinking… what exactly is bulging? The plastic around the hole? https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif Maybe you could post a photo, if its large enough to be captured in a photo?

I had to poke around the pin hole trying to open it with a slight angle since straight press was not successful.. I suggested black model as it is supposed to have a rubbery finish rather than metallic paint over plastic.

Oh u finally figured it out (how to open sim tray). As per me, for the first time everyone will be confused because one should apply little more pressure than usual. But should make sure the pin is straight while pressing. Keep this in mind guys.

When I checked the first time, RAM was 1.2GB/1.81GB used.
I updated phone to MIUI 18.0 and now RAM usage is reduced after this update. Even removed unwanted google apps like playbooks, playgames etc. Now it shows 800MB/1.81GB used. Some one one this thread few reboot will bring down the RAM to normal. I’m working on it. Hope this helps many who r facing this issue.

Its cold-pluggable. I mean you need not to reboot the phone after inserting the SIM. It auto detects it and works fine.

And Akshat, I like u man. You literally helping the dimers a lot.. Keep doing. Jai ho.. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Okay now I have a new issue. The moment I initiate a call by pressing call button the screen turns off and it is impossible to turn on. I had to long press power button and the phone rebooted… And that’s the only way to get access again! Once the screen turns off nothing gets it on again except this. No way to even terminate the call!

This is just ridiculous…
