All ssd nowadays give 400MB/s+ read/write speeds, the difference lies in for how long(cheap dramless ssd like this/bx500/wd green can sustain such write speeds for max few minutes/less than 60-70% filled before dropping down to hdd level write speeds while top tier ssd like MX500 & samsung 860/870 evo will give 400MB/s+ speeds for as long as drive has any free space left).

@Agnivo007 Also, windows itself now needs at least 50GB for smooth functioning & this is without any big software like MS Office or some game. Such 120gb ssd are nowadays only useful for running some linux OS in NAS/HTPC or to be used as portable external drive.

That's because you are not transferring file/files larger than your ssd cache which is usually around 10-30gb in such dramless ssd. Also, slow speed only apply to write not read so once a game is installed in even a dramless ssd it will load almost as fast as any top tier ssd(sata ssd I mean). Ppl who end up shifting their steam library from fast hdd/fast smaller ssd to such dramless larger ssd always experience 50-60MB/s write speeds.

Hmm... what @guest_999 wrote, already knew about, good valid points... still have a samsung evo 870 250gb sata lying around if I need in future (bought @ 3.5k back then, very little used)...

Had bought a SP P34A60 nvme 250gb more than a year ago @ 3k and using with pcie-nvme riser on an old h110 board (no nvme slot), these have become cheap nowadays at around 2k...

They(dramless SSDs) drop down to speeds much below HDD. Have a look at the video above. They have a small SLC cache but in case of MX500 the cache is dynamic and depends on free space.

I suppose they can be used for OS booting as it requires random reads without much write requirements.

Yes but still the avg speeds on MX500 are much better. Even if MX500 is almost entirely full it will still have a min amt of ~30GB SLC cache & even post cache the speeds of MX500 will still be around at least 300MB/s.
