Finally cancelled and order dell

Analyst Analyst

lol swetalisa98937 I did the same thing.. Saw Dell I3 6th gen with windows and office at amazon and flipkart for 25K. And 10% discount.. Needed office so not many choices there since it costs like 7000 by itself.. Add in 8GB ram for 6K and 7K for SSD and you have a pretty good system or cheaper out with 4GB and 250GB SSD for 6K extra..I do have an asus phone which is very fast but some apps dont work with it and a laptop which which is flimpsy but very light unlike the dell. Seems intel cpu’s except for I5 8th gen are all very similar since 6th gen.. The I5 8th gen adds 2 extra cores so makes a difference but you have to be desperate to want to play games on a laptop to need such speeds.. The I3 6th gen is twice as fast as the I3 2nd gen sandy bridge but 6 to 8th gen you wont notice that much difference.

I am not sure how to post pics here.. (darn wireless keyboard wont print half the letters)

But both flipkart and amazon have offers Dell I3 6th gen inspirons and vostros. rs24999 same for all with win10/msoffice. I saw 3 each at each site.. vostro at amazon and inspirion at flipkart.. Looking at specs they seem identical but says vostro is 3kg and inspiron 2.2kg.. Not sure about that.. Even Screen is FHD in both.. I did not get the 7th gen because only 14" screen..

Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Series Core i3 7th Gen – (4 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home) 3467 Laptop ₹25,990₹32,36719% off

On amazon the identical vostro also shows up because in the listing it has the inspiration 15 3000 user manual..

100% worth, if you willing to spend Rs.3000 extra for extra 4GB RAM biggrin

Even with Fujitsu 5th Gen laptops, dimers were damn happy biggrin

In this review, the author clearly said there is m2 slot biggrin

https://pc-tablet.com/asus-vivobook-x507-r...w/

The laptop he reviewed was 6th gen core i3 and of x507 series biggrin

So if you upgrade RAM, it will cost you around Rs.20000 (4+4GB)
And if you are willing to shell extra for SSD, the Laptop will be damn smooth biggrin

Or shuld I cancel ?

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

Why?

Analyst Analyst
Link Copied

When you decide to cancel, you should think of why you are buying it. A good price is not so good if you are not going to use it. You also have to look at how much the end cost is going to be. You want to expand the RAM, install an SSD and also software. You can use pirated software and save 10,000.. But I can tell you thats not a good idea for most people due to many issues. You can use linux and other free software if you have the capability and time. When I first saw Unix I was amazed how great it was but the hardware needed cost a lot since even at that time, you needed a powerful system to run the GUI and such and also lacking software. And using it now, I can do pretty much everything.. But it takes a lot of time to figure out how to use and you dont want to provide tech support for others. If you just want to use it for general use then just go for the best price.. You are not going to demand particular drivers and speed and display etc.. This is a great system for general use.. And will suit most people for every day tasks..

So unless you have something particular specific use then you need to take that into consideration.. I saw office needs like 4000 etc per year of licensing fees or like 4000 or 8000 for msoffice and hence I needed to add that price as well.. I also cant be providing tech support in the OS so I also needed windows although even win7 was fine.. The problem that comes up might be only once an year.. After going through a few of these I decided it just was not worth the aggravation.. Or just use Linux.. But that also takes time to setup. I saw acer has a price difference of 3-4000 if you dont want windows.. They add Linux for 1000 extra but you can also do it.. But you need to hunt for drivers yourself to save 1000..

Many people do not have long term experience is dealing with tech issues.. It is very important to spend time to take many factors into account and what you want to use it for.. Price itself is not the final factor..

Received mine. Manufactured in August 2018 and imported in September. Really sexy looking model.

Any heads up on MS Office? The original costs 5.5k. sad

https://www.amazon.in/Dell-Vostro-15-6-inch-Lap...

Had ordered this Dell for 23k. Then cancelled it cuz 18k for Asus seemed too lucrative to miss out.

Not sure what to do about MS Office.

Analyst Analyst
Link Copied

It will cost you like 3500 to license office for 1 year or like 8000 to buy life time. Also its a 3568 so the faster version than the 3567 and also comes with a DVD drive.

Overall better buy.. My dell from decade ago still works even though had to replace battery and charger etc.. Asus wont last very long. Although Asus also have premium quality line. Dell has cheap stuff too but not as cheap as Asus and such.. If within 10% and similar specs I would buy Dell.. Even if they are all made in China.. When lightning destroyed my Dell lan port, they sent a tech to replace the entire mother board… twice since the first one had some other problems.. Over nighted the mother board and he replaced it at home. Asus I dont know.. If their after sales service is that good.. Still have no OS updates to my Asus Zoom 3 phone they sold for 38000 as the best camera phone next to factory made chapathi.

Installing SSD’s or RAM is very difficult. You have to be very careful about the cables, power, keyboard, wifi, hard drive, monitor fan and remove mother board and insert ram or M2 SSD. Replacing the HD with SSD is easier but still difficult.. You can end up with flex on the keyboard which means you need to press the keys harder because it got bent. Getting it done professionally dont mean this wont happen.. But if you are doing ti yourself take the time to learn how to do it.

Dell etc is far easier.. But you have to be careful even there as the keys pop off if you pull on the key to lift the keyboard and then no way to put the caps back on the keypad..Just take your time and calm down before doing it. Plenty of light and no one else to bother you..

I learnt about this when I plugged in a lexmark USB drive which was a bad design and shorted the port and shutdown the computer and would not power back on. Fearing I could use the ram and battery some where else I opened it and then removed the battery and lithium battery and just plugged in the power to the mother board with nothing else and the light showed up and I was surprised.. The dead motherboard came back to life.. So I reassembled it and it works.. You have to remove the backup lithium battery to reset it. Means disassembling everything!!!

ARGH!!! This is driving me nuts.. What type of M2 SSD does it need?

This review says its not a SATA M2 drive but a NVME M2 drive.. Does Asus accept V2 drives of B&M key format??? Intel allows you to cache HD onto an SSD like Optane so requires NVMe drives for speed.. But others have used Sata M2 to use just as an SSD.. You can buy an adapter to use either type inside a PC but not in a laptop.. No info from Asus on this..

https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/other/asus-vivob...

The motherboard on the X507 features a singular RAM DIMM and allowing you to upgrade to 8GB of RAM. Our review unit also had a 1TB internal drive spinning at 5400rpm, but there is an m.2 slot on the motherboard which will allow you to use an NVMe based SSD (max 256GB) to speed up the system. Asus also offers an SKU with the Nvidia MX110 with 2GB of graphics memory, but our unit did not have that.

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/S/aplus-media...

https://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-Single-Side...

I think this type of M2 works on this system. Its not a 4 lane NVMe but a 2 Lane one which seems to be a hybrid. (PCI Express Gen 3 x2)

https://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-80mm-Expres...

This is a real NVMe x4 M2 card with Mkey and will only work on a PCIe slot.. So thats easy to understand..

@Original

So, tried opening the laptop but is too delicate and did not want to take risk by removing all the cables. Have upgraded Macbook pro as well, but never found it this difficult. Too many cables between top and bottom plate and even just opening the lid was very tough without the right equipment.

Did not open fully, so cant say what type of Slot is available. Have taken pic, if anyone can make out from it, will much appreciate (Will purchase SSD and upgrade with professional help).

Also, there is opening in the back of laptop, what is it for, RAM?

So either we can add SSD or RAM..Am I right @original @cashif

Analyst Analyst

Best description for M2 SSD usage.. Seems we can use both Sata and NVMe types since the hybrid drives can switch modes by reformatting the hard drive. You start off in Sata mode and when NVMe drivers come, you switch modes to use the faster speeds.. The Bios also needs support so not just hardware and drivers.. I am not sure about booting but I suppose thats the Bios support..

https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-m2-...53

That pic above is to add in RAM so thats easy.. Just insert extra RAM stick and you are done, no need to remove back cover and all the flex cables etc.. like to insert the M2 SSD.. Got Asus service center close by so maybe paying the 1000 to get it installed might be easier..

Do you have a better quality pic (higher resolution and brighter) of the insides? Cant see it clearely.. But it seems the M2 slot is taken by the Wifi module since they use the same slot.. If so then you put in SSD and then no Wifi..

Suhani you need to look for the X507 I3 7th gen offer.. Now its selling for 29900 instead of 26990 so even with 7000 off its still 22500.. But earlier they had the 27250 sale.. The difference between the 2 is the color of the lid.. Some might cancel then they put it back on sale.. keep looking for the 5000 off listing..

Deal still available but the price will be 23000 even with 7100 off..

The laptop10000 also working but now price is 44990 instead of 37990 so not worth it..

M.2 Wifi slots are E-key, 2230 usually whereas SSDs are 2242/2280 so doesn’t look like it will fit.
M.2 SATA is the safer way to go as one doesn’t have to deal with BIOS incompatibilities and thermal throttling issues. Plus unless one is into 4k video editing (not advisable in this laptop anyway) the difference between SATA and NVMe hardly matter and the latter is too costly to boot. Cheapest M.2 SATA Adata SU800 128GB/256GB 2.7k/4.5k whereas on the NVMe side Adata XPG SX8200 256GB 6.2K. The M.2 version of Samsung 860 EVO is a good 1.5k higher than its 2.5" counterpart otherwise its a no-brainer.500 GB Crucial MX 500 M.2 is only 7.5k but still unsure about aftersales services.

Hello,

Received and looks good but it’s battery was totally discharged. It was Manufactured in August and Imported in September, BIOS is also set @ August. Now, I have a doubt whether this is brand new or User returned! Although, it does appear brand new, sealed product other than the reason I mentioned. Any idea? Thanks.

Also, the Esc key is a bit notchy, it gets struck sometimes.

No! Unless its the very rare MXM one. Graphics cards are soldered onto the mobo so no chance of installing one. In laptops with Thunderbolt port however its possible to connect an external GPU.

Look wise it is good but dont understand you guys praising its performance.

Have formatted and clean installed windows 10 by removing McAfee and other Asus bloatware but its performance is damn sloooooooow & buggy and had to restart twice to get the programs going (Maybe am comparing with my macbook). Or is Office 2019 which is hogging RAM?

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

I think its slowness is mostly down to the lack of SSD. This is esp. noticeable after boot when Windows in an attempt to mitigate the slow disk perf. loads frequently accessed programs from HDD to RAM pre-emptively. In Task Manager it shows Superfetch pegging the disk usage at 100%. Or it could be Windows Updates running in the background or Windows Defender scanning stuff. RAM could also come into play if too many apps/tabs are open but mostly its the slow HDD.

I have an I3 6th gen with SSD and 16GB ram for desktop and other than running out of memory and closing stuff, its as fast as I need it for anything.. Its twice as fast as my sandy bridge for video conversions and large file copying.. I am just saying.. Speed is relative but you need enough memory so it dont keep swapping and these days unless you are a heavy gamer, almost anything will do since the difference is not much between CPU’s unlike on phones where CPU performance is dependent on the java stuff running on it which needs a really fast CPU and lots of memory. 4GB memory is very easy to add to this..

The SSD is great for loading 10000 small files like reopening browsers etc.. Even a very fast hard drive has trouble here and slow hard drives will just die. More memory wont help much here..But more memory will help later on during heavy use. Ofcourse if you just sleep the system then this loading is a one time thing and wont happen until you reboot. Any SSD will speed up loading here by a big fraction. Just because an SSD has slow transfers dont matter all that much because it is the access times that causes delays because of a large number of small files. A few seconds to load large files is not noticeable unless you were like my old boss who bought an IBM PS2 for like $22K in 1990 which would be like $100K now and it loaded word perfect in 1 second flat.. . Wonder if he sleeps on it these days..

Ah you could have just removed the active partition flag where windows is installed so it wont boot from it.. That way you could always set the partition active again to boot off it..

Just saying.. Dont delete the partitions because when you get an error it comes in useful to recover.. With UEFI it is a little different than the old bios way to boot.. All this is stored in flash memory including the windows key.. and you need a UEFI editor to fix things.

PS Seagate SSD is cheaper and the fastest hard drive currently off all those.. I saw it on amazon for 8099 and the 10% discount but I was not sure what kind of M2 card this thing took or I would have bought it sad.. Although dogfish using MLC is going for like 7000 for 480GB.. This is 10x better than all the current SSD’s.. It might not be the fastest but it will out last all of them by like 5 years..

Well about 7000 rs and 3000 extra for windows is about the right comparison.. Keep watching for x507 I3 7th gen laptops with 5000 discount and they take laptop7000 discount and your price is 20000 for it.. It seems some people did not accept delivery and cancelled their order so those come back on sale for same price..

I also got the 8GB rs4800 ram from amazon and 10% off but cruicial on flipkart and amazon are going for 5500 for 8GB.. You need ram no matter what the system so it was a no brainier to buy and it already arrived but cant use it in any laptop I have which need DDR2 or DDR3..

YOU NEED DDR4 LAPTOP RAM!!!!! Nothing else will work.. Laptop ram’s is taller and desktop ram is wider.. so they are not the same and SIZE does matter..

DDR2 2GB is like rs500.. and DDR3 4GB is like rs2000.. But DDR4 4GB is like rs4000… Although I paid like rs7000 for 16GB DDR4 2 years ago.. The same Ram is now 15000 for some reason..

To find SSD’s go to amazon and search for M.2 2280 Internal SSD. Dont get the ones which clearly say only work with NVMe.. But all others will work if you can get it installed by the service center..

https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B01M2WYNP2/ref...

or this if you are going to get rid of the hard drive which is mostly dead weight.. put it into an external USB3 box when you want to save data..
