ASUS Laptop- Keeps freezing

Hi!

I had got a Asus Vivobook 15 laptop in 2019 for my brother. Suddenly, his laptop started freezing last week (Am in different town and cant check), he took it to local technician, who apparently said the issue with OS and charged 1k! for reinstalling windows. Today he got the laptop back but same issue is persisting. Local Tech is not willing to take responsibility and he asked my bro to take laptop to Asus service center.

At Asus, morning they said, issue with OS but now received call that Motherboard is gone and it will cost 25k to change MB! (Laptop was bought for around 32k). Moreover, it is not switching ON now whereas it used to hang after 10 mins earlier. Any suggestions?

PS: RAM was cleaned by local tech

You could try a dry run using another hard disk, before going for the MB repair as suggested by the Asus Service Centre.

I wouldn’t repair a laptop for 25K anyway, but instead buy a new one if it is really important. Take the laptop back from Asus, give it back to the technician who done the first repair and ask him to spare you another hard disk to test.

The technician made easy money from your suggesting you OS install.

Can you tell whether your Laptop has SSD? and how much RAM?

If there’s still freezing issue after OS refresh/reset, then its not OS related
Random freezing could be related to faulty HDD/RAM/MB

First try to replace HDD/SSD, then RAM
If the laptop continues to freeze post replacement of storage and memory, then consider getting the Motherboard checked

Edit: Also, monitoring the performance/thermals of system components via windows taskbar and apps like HWinfo will be helpful

I suspected and hence RAM was cleaned by local tech.

The question is why it is not switching on now whereas it was loading till morning. My bri has taken the laptop back now and taking it to Richie street..

Never spend more than 5-6k on motherboard repair, it is neither required nor recommended. If a laptop motherboard really requires 25k worth of repairing then time to discard that laptop because it would practically be a new laptop anyway with entirely new genuine mobo(assuming service centre is honest) with all the connected parts also replaced but with no warranty except maybe the 3 months usual repair parts warranty. Also, for out of warranty laptops never contact authorized service centres because their charges will be hugely inflated with performance/reliability difference maybe 10-20% better than local laptop shops repair work.

What about the power indicator on laptop? Is it ON?
Laptop won’t post if the memory module is dead too

Most likely they have accidently damaged the whole thing when trying to open and troubleshoot the SSD/RAM/KBD components.

Yep, looks likes it. Now, apparently not switching at all. Just fan noise for few seconds and totally silent

Same feedback at Richie street as well. Motherboard gone and they apparently said, is the issue with this model and to not repair it as we will face same issue in future..

Disable the inbuilt wifi adapter and buy a usb wifi adapter to get rid of this headache.

Uninstall the WIFI adapter via Device manager + Restart and see if it works
If you’re getting same error, then try re-seating the wifi card and last option is to replace the network card ( I got fenvi WIFI 6 card from AliExpress for ~1k sometime in 2019 )

This is the least cost and the easiest way to get rid of inbuilt wifi adapter errors. Sometimes inbuilt wifi adapter errors are too complex to find a permanent fix.

How long did you wait after removing the CMOS battery?
Anyways first try to disconnect + reconnect system components like RAM, GPU, CPU cable and storage devices
and if this doesn’t work, try removing the CMOS battery + the SMPS cable.. wait for couple of minutes or an hour and test again
