ASUS Laptop- Keeps freezing

Hi!
I had got a Asus Vivobook 15 laptop in 2019 for my brother. Suddenly, his laptop started freezing last week (Am in different town and cant check), he took it to local technician, who apparently said the issue with OS and charged 1k! for reinstalling windows. Today he got the laptop back but same issue is persisting. Local Tech is not willing to take responsibility and he asked my bro to take laptop to Asus service center.
At Asus, morning they said, issue with OS but now received call that Motherboard is gone and it will cost 25k to change MB! (Laptop was bought for around 32k). Moreover, it is not switching ON now whereas it used to hang after 10 mins earlier. Any suggestions?
PS: RAM was cleaned by local tech

The technician made easy money from your suggesting you OS install.
Can you tell whether your Laptop has SSD? and how much RAM?
Yep, I know. Am not in town else would have installed myself. Config of laptop is 8th Gen i3/4Gb Ram/256Gb ssd.
If there’s still freezing issue after OS refresh/reset, then its not OS related
Random freezing could be related to faulty HDD/RAM/MB
First try to replace HDD/SSD, then RAM
If the laptop continues to freeze post replacement of storage and memory, then consider getting the Motherboard checked
Edit: Also, monitoring the performance/thermals of system components via windows taskbar and apps like HWinfo will be helpful
I suspected and hence RAM was cleaned by local tech.
The question is why it is not switching on now whereas it was loading till morning. My bri has taken the laptop back now and taking it to Richie street..
Never spend more than 5-6k on motherboard repair, it is neither required nor recommended. If a laptop motherboard really requires 25k worth of repairing then time to discard that laptop because it would practically be a new laptop anyway with entirely new genuine mobo(assuming service centre is honest) with all the connected parts also replaced but with no warranty except maybe the 3 months usual repair parts warranty. Also, for out of warranty laptops never contact authorized service centres because their charges will be hugely inflated with performance/reliability difference maybe 10-20% better than local laptop shops repair work.
Any laptop suggestion in 30k range. No gaming or multimedia. Just Excel and Browsing..
There was a very good deal recently but went out of stock within an hour.

Change your laptop in this sale
might be problem with drivers .. even my asus laptop with ryzen 5 3xxH crashes sometimes . it got reduced after installing correct graphic drivers from AMD website instead of one’s provided by asus
It’s been in use for past 18 months and suddenly, overnight, this issue. Expecting laptop tmrw. Will open, clean and then try to reinstall windows.

Reset CMOS (Re-seat CMOS battery on MB)
Ok. Let me try this.
That thick/24pin flat cable is main power supply to motherboard. Make sure when you plug it in that clip on cable plug side completely grasp the slot on mobo. You can even take a look at the pins inserted in the slot to make sure all are of equal length as sometimes not enough pressure may cause one side of the cable plug not fully inserted into mobo slot.
Btw it is a very old mobo with pci slot so I am guessing intel core 1st gen or maybe even older core2duo/quad series.
Looks firmly placed.
What are the troubleshooting options left, apart from procuring a new mobo or smps?
SMPS cable pin look fine to me
May be the SMPS was faulty from the start and now its dead completely.. which is why the system isn’t Switching ON
Visit local repair shop and get this checked with the spare SMPS over there. They charge around 300/350 here
( Consider Mobo replacement as last option)
Bought this one. I generally don’t prefer HP and Dell as I find their laptop bulky but this has been a bad experience, so bought this..

Excluding GST, works out to 32.5k. Found it worthwhile considering am getting official Windows and office.
Conga bhai…
Check the power outlet, check the Power cord, check the SMPS, check the SMPS cable. 🙂 Check the SMPS cable first. And then power outlet and powercord. Take help of a local repair shop. 🙂🙂🙂
@cashif Bhai. Change the Thermal paste. See if CPU is getting overheated.
So, checked the laptop and it is working fine except for keyboard. Nearly half the keys of KB are not working (earlier- the issue was apparently only with function keys); was able to work around by activating on-screen keyboard. No other issue found; will try again later by uninstalling & reinstalling drivers..
Update- Lappy works for 15 mins and then hangs. After restart, screen is blank except for fan noise. The laptop is again operational after long gap. KB keys still not working.

So, after going through Youtube videos today, I saw checking the SMPS by shorting the Green and Black pins of the SMPS cable. The SMPS fan works on shorting the SMPS cable, but does not work when connected to the motherboard.
I also tried 2 new CMOS battery replacements. Checked RAM reseating.
So, from the SMPS shorting method, it proves that the SMPS is alright, the power cord, the outlet, all those are alright as well. Its this generic motherboard which has gone kaput after lying idle for 5 years, right ? There cannot be anything else besides either the SMPS or the Motherboard for this desktop not powering on at all ?
Defective RAM can be the cause too
You could try a dry run using another hard disk, before going for the MB repair as suggested by the Asus Service Centre.
I wouldn’t repair a laptop for 25K anyway, but instead buy a new one if it is really important. Take the laptop back from Asus, give it back to the technician who done the first repair and ask him to spare you another hard disk to test.
