Dear All,

I am looking for my first Credit Card and need help, suggestions and healthy discussions pertaining to anything about Credit Cards

Purpose : My primary purpose of getting a Credit Card is improving my CIBIL Score as I intend to buy a house next 3 years down the line.

Some details : Age 23, Salary is frankly good enough to get any Credit Card, Not an impulsive shopper though Phones are my weakness but in recent times I have been able to curb on it .

My typical online usage : All the routine online payments and big ticket online purchases in my household I intend to route it through my account .

Typical Payments: Mobile Bills( Courtesy Jio has reduced drastically ) , Electricity Bills, Internet Bills , Online Grocery Shopping, Restaurants ( Fast Food Joints and Stuff maybe once every week or fortnigh) , BMS maybe once a month and rest Electronics and Apparel Shopping and Vacations/Getaways and sometimes online medicines too ( non-frequent but worth mentioning )

Max to max intend to spend lets say 6k to 8k a month using the card inspite of all the above mentioned purchases and its after keeping a buffer margin . A big shopping like a Phone or some other heavy electronics or a trip may increase my spending in some of the months.

Payments : I am no way intending to improve my current Lifestyle or living standards its only that I want to improve upon my CIBIL Score so all the payments would be made in time/within the due date .

I have been approached by Citi for Premium Platinum Rewards cards and have yet to give them a consent on the same. First year is free and then from next years fees will be waived if spends cross 30k a year . I have also read about the HDFC Diners Club card so confused which one should I opt for keeping in my above shopping needs

I have read almost all the previous threads on this topic and have created a new one as the threads with the most information are atleast an year old . Tagging all the dimers whom I feel are relevant to discussion in the next post .

RBL gives 500 BMS and 300 Pizzahut/kfc every month so it serves my movie purpose. And never use RBL for EMIs cos their charges are really high.

ICICI gives good payback points and the customer support is excellent and have some good restaurants covered under Culinary Treats for fine dining.

Axis brings plenty of offers both online and offline.

HDFC is great if you want higher limits as they keep on increasing based on your transactions. HDFC is actually good if you looking for loans as they give pre approved loans based on your performance.

SBI I use for small purchases.

So I would suggest you to get alteast 2-3 cards cos just 1 won’t solve the purpose if you looking for offers.

Use the card wisely and if you can control your spending then Credit Card is a great thing to have.

But why?

IMO, Citi has the best customer service in India (almost at the level of costly Amex cards; costly for both customers as well as merchants). And the Super Value Titanium card from SCB is a must have for a superb 5% cashback on monthly bills!

@A2Zdeals you have spoiled me with choices . RBL looks good so does hdfc diners so does sc titanium and citi too . I absolutely agree that each serve different purposes and on my quest to a single card has now led me to ponder upon having 2cards atleast

@anirudh88a thanks for suggestion pertaining to diners . Yes I want to get this one cause of the multiple benefits on online shopping . Premium seems a better deal I’ll need to confirm that I’m eligible for one .

@viSH RBL seems another interesting option cause maybe I go for a movie once a month as well as visit KFC once a month . It’s become spoilt for choosing cards with the plethora of benefits each one has to offer

LOL for few :

1. If u think having a credit card will improve your cibil score to buy a house.

2. Applying for 3-4 cards and out of them may be 1-2 will get rejected becoz FOIR or NAI will not get set according to income and it will show multiple queries for credit cards in cibil.

my cibil score is -1 and none of the banks can stop me if I want to buy a house. -1 is not a low score. it is insufficient credit history which never means inability of repayment.

better take a simple / single credit card if usage low. I have an add on card on dad’s name and it suffice my usage.

He will not even be able to get an AMEX card as CIBIL score is not yet generated.

everything is possible today the american express is needing fresh gogetters like dada muni.. 23 year old .
my accident was when i was 28 year old..
Being young is a different think and having a credit history is something different. I am certain he will not be able to get an Amex card if he applies individually.

Having another bank’s credit card is a prerequisite for getting an AMEX card these days.

As already mentioned elsewhere about Amex gold charge )
I am getting . 12k points free ( 1000 per month) +other points on usage ,
If total is 18000 we get rs 7500 statememt credit
Or 24000 points 10k credit.

So it seems best to get roughly 5k-7.5 k free
+ fee waiver 75-100%

Fee waiver will be there for only high spenders I guess, or even if you are making just 4*1000 transactions per month?

I am getting min. 75% waiver every year, fee is high 4500+ tax.

PS.

I have not used this
But Syed posted that add-on card is also eligible for 1000 per month and points can ne merged.

100% waiver on 3-4Lakhs is great. But not possible for me to spend that much as I need to use other spends based fee waiver based cards as well https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

My spending is less than 10k/month on AMEX (some months it’s exactly 4k for 4 1k txn) and I paid 1125+taxes as fee this year..got 19980 points at end of the year and redeemed 18k for 7.5k credit..
Also, on 1st renewal got 5k points..

well, I can easily get to 18k again before 2nd renewal..as I again have 3980 points and will get 5k renewal points in some days..and the value for redeeming 18k and 24k is same..so, redeeming now was a better option for me..
just called them to reduce it and they checked my spend history and gave me 2 options..

I have not used this
But Syed posted that add-on card is also eligible for 1000 per month and points can ne merged.

My spending is less than 10k/month on AMEX (some months it’s exactly 4k for 4 1k txn) and I paid 1125+taxes as fee this year..got 19980 points at end of the year and redeemed 18k for 7.5k credit..
Also, on 1st renewal got 5k points..

Reason for redeeming 18000 when you would have reached 24000 in a few months?
1125 + taxes? How?
well, I can easily get to 18k again before 2nd renewal..as I again have 3980 points and will get 5k renewal points in some days..and the value for redeeming 18k and 24k is same..so, redeeming now was a better option for me..
just called them to reduce it and they checked my spend history and gave me 2 options..

But 5k renewal bonus is there on first renewal only.
