Dangers of muscleblaze whey protein

Hi Guys,

Don’t buy muscleblaze whey protein . It has “aspartame”, which is an artificial sweetener. You can find more about it in this link

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/arch...

I was diagnosed with anxiety & was taking this. Suddenly I got more panic attacks. Then I went to my doc to find what’s wrong. He told me to immediately stop using this. (Since I knew it was because of aspartame. I googled it before I went to him). So please spread the word guys. If you are dealing with any psychiatric problems, then avoid it at any cost. You won’t find aspartame in any supplements from abroad (ON, MuscleTech, MusclePharm, BPI, ISOPURE..).

Take Care.

Whoa! That is quite shocking because they seem to mention that its better and shows more improvement than any other proteins in the market. They have built up quite good rep and are making huge amounts of profit as well, we could say Muscleblaze has quite established itself as a popular brand in India.

But we can’t be dependent on just one source which could mention slightly unrelated stuff as some other authentic websites similar to Wikipedia do suggest that the research hasn’t shown much of effects if taken in the right amount on the health but we can’t completely ignore it either.

Also, it isn’t probably the best for the people who already have some kind of health issues and I do remember taking it and never faced any issues with it. But yes, we did need to take into consideration that it was beneficial in any manner, other international protein brands would have been using it as well but none of the ones I checked seem to have this as their ingredient. So, its better to avoid it for now and send few emails to the query dept. of Muscleblaze and wait for their reply to see what they have on their share for the argument.

P.S. I would suggest Admin to pin this post on the top of the page to create awareness about it, help the people who’re taking it and increase the chances of getting a reply from an official representative of Muscleblaze.

Aspartame is indeed not a good non-calorie sweetener. It is a known carcinogen (i.e. causes cancer). But people with incomplete information often hype the negative effects. One needs to drink about 20 cans of Diet Coke a day to reach the doses that trigger carcinogenicity. Anyway, I don’t want to side track this topic.

I hope you will also avoid taking “Equal” and “Sugar Free Gold” in your tea/coffee. I recommend Sucralose or Stevia based non-calorie sweeteners to avoid such negative effects. So use “Sugar Free Natura”, “Herbvia”, or other Sucralose/Stevia based sweeteners.

As for protein supplements, out of the ones I use, Ultimate Nutrition uses Sucralose to add the non-caloric sweetness. So you may want to try that.

By the way, not everybody has the same reaction to the small dose of Aspartame that is present in one or two servings of MuscleBlaze so please do not make them out to be the bad guy. Their protein powder is decent and provides a cheaper alternative to the unnecessarily expensive imported ones. Moreover, Aspartame is increasingly being used in confectionery items in India so learn to read the nutrition label before you buy/consume any packaged food item.

It is always better to stick to known brands when it comes to protein supplement. I’m always vary of trying health supplement since most of them don’t go through FDA approvals however some of the brands like " ON" are claimed to be very decent as per bodybuilding community. In india, most online websites selling ON whey maybe fake as reported by a few people in desidime itself.

I would say best option is to import your product directly from bodybuilding.com store. They might take a few weeks to deliver to india however you can be assured of Genuinity.

I agree, but buying from a non-marketplace website like HealthKart is equally important to avoid fake powders. The fakes are so good that a casual buyer won’t be able to tell any difference. Only somebody who has consumed protein powders for years, has tried a lot of brands, and has an eye for detail can identify the fake ones.

I considered this option after moving back to India a few years ago, but then avoided it because of my poor experience with customs. Can you please create a thread and give all the details – a guide of sorts? I am sure a lot of others will appreciate this information.

Can’t speak for others, but I am a ‘functional fitness’ guy. So I don’t carry a lot of muscle, but I’ve got a strong core and a mean punch. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_wink.gif

I don’t use whey protein or any health supplement for that matter. I stick to good old protein food like Tuna, Chicken breast etc.
My brother who is into bodybuilding imports whey, Fish oil capsule etc from bodybuilding.com store. AFAIK he has not paid anything to customs yet. before adding customs, prices including shipping from U.S is around 30-40% cheaper compared to indian prices.

Lucky you! A really bad incident happened with me after which I stopped importing from BB.com.

When I ordered for the first time, everything went in smooth, paid the payment on Bodybuilding.com via Paypal and the package was delivered within a few weeks, no customs or such charged. This was a trial order and everything went in smooth which motivated me to place a big order with lots of stuff! I chose better shipping options to get it delivered even faster, the prices were pretty much the same including the delivery. It went in all smooth until I got the call from the courier guy!

He asked me to pay 50% of the order value which in my case was Rs.9000 to deliver the package! I asked him for the receipts and he said he has all of them, I went through them and eventually they were the real custom receipts and I had no choice but to either give up my stock of Rs.18000 or pay extra Rs.9000 to get it! I though paying Rs.9000 would be easier and better option and paid cash to him right away.

After that, I haven’t ordered anything from Bodybuilding.com , their products do entice me to place some orders but I am not going to play any until I get a fair idea of how everything works and how can I avoid the customs like I did the first time unknowingly!

http://eatingacademy.com/nutrition/what-are-the-side-effects-of-aspartame-stevia-and-other-sugar-subst...es

Question 1: Are artificial (i.e., non-sugar or substitute) sweeteners more chronically harmful than sucrose/HFCS?

There’s no shortage of fear out there that consuming aspartame, sucralose, or other non-sugar substitute sweeteners will lead to chronic diseases like cancer or heart disease. However, there is no credible evidence of this in humans. One can actually make a convincing case that no substance ingested by humans has been more thoroughly tested by the FDA than aspartame. The former Commissioner of the FDA noted, “Few compounds have withstood such detailed testing and repeated, close scrutiny, and the process through which aspartame has gone should provide the public with additional confidence of its safety.” While it might be the case that you can harm a rat with aspartame, it seems you need to force the rat to eat its bodyweight in aspartame every day for a year to do so (I’m being a bit facetious, but you get the idea). In fact, even water would be harmful to us in the quantities required to render aspartame harmful if we extrapolate from rat studies.

Since its invention/discovery in 1965, there is not a single well-documented case of chronic harm to a human from ingesting aspartame, and prior to its approval for human consumption in the early 1980’s it had been studied in approximately 100 independent studies. A possible exception to this might be in the rare person with phenylketonuria (PKU). Such folks lack an enzyme required to metabolize a breakdown product of aspartame.

So, aside from the rare person with PKU, does this mean aspartame is 100% harmless? Not necessarily. 100% harmless is a pretty high bar. “Harmless,” using air travel as an analogy, is not getting on an airplane at all. Consuming aspartame is more like getting on a commercial airplane – statistically speaking you are very safe, but something bad could happen that we’re not aware of yet. Consuming sugar in the amounts we typically do, by contrast, is downright harmful. “Harmful,” by the air travel analogy, is not only getting on an airplane but skydiving with a poorly-packed parachute – you might make it, but you’re really taking a chance.

As far as other non-sugar substitute sweeteners go (e.g., sucralose, saccharin, stevia, xylitol), the same logic holds except that we don’t have quite as much data on them because most of them (see figure, below, for the most popular ones) haven’t been on our tables quite as long as aspartame. However, to date there are no data linking these substances to the diseases people tend to erroneously link them to in casual conversation.
