I applied for passport in 2016 and process was smooth. After 1 month a local police verification need to be done. So, as this is a small town here police don't arrive to your place rather you have go to the local police station with all your documents to get your local identification verified for a succesful Passport application. I was 21 yrs old that time.
So, I went to the police station with all documents and after 1 hour of wait submitted all documents and did multiple signatures on a form. Then I thought process is complete and now can leave for home. 
after 5-10 sec that officer told me to come with him out of the office premises and then suddenly asked me for Rs.1000 bribe and said if I don't pay that that verification file will not move to next steps, Also he said that money goes upto high authority like SP (IPS) so, no one can help me in that case.
After a bergen Rs.750 was the final amount what I had given to that officer as a brieb. That time I was taking math tuition and earning Rs.1000 every month, so I gave the bribe with that hard earned money 
And that was a very bad day for me emotionally as I never had any idea about that kind of people do exist in the world. So, that how I faced a live corruption.

Yes I have done this too. They will never take risk on their job for 1000 rupees bribe. If complaint is done, it is not likely but they can be suspended. So they ask for it and if you don't give they will still move it forward.
I have answered in same way for passport, license many things just saying that i am a student and i do t have money
this will be story of everyone(incl me😌) without exception
u can avoid bribe sometimes like in passport, its not easy for local police to reject ur docs or report something -ve b'cos if we raise bribery complaint it has considerable effect on that officer due to internal politics also, career wise...I was ready to give 500 as tip but that police was not caring my nbrs who I called as witness(upon his request) kept them waiting more than 10mins meanwhile he was asking all certificate copies, and write up from 1st std to today which snapped me, I said only adhar I give no letter no certificate copies, if u want go and write -ve report I will go to court, he was very angry and asked me to visit station next day, I said I will not come go and write -ve report if u wish(I was literally shouting) after a week rcvd passport
I applied for a passport in July/Aug 2021 (2nd wave high point I think), which took 10 days but I got it without any bribes or misbehaving. I'm from Vadodara, Gujarat BTW.
The only "inconvenience" I faced was that for police verification, I had to go to the police station as they did not come to my house but the process was quite smooth and people I interacted were friendly (from Passport office to Police)
Paid bribe many times.. Without that govt officers wont work. This time i tried to transfer vehicle ownership without paying anything. There was no updates from RTO after 2 months also. Once i went to office which is around 6 kms from my home. They have put one small red mark on my file and kept separately. So after i went their they search the file for a while and deliberately asked me to wait till noon as some one need to sign and later i came to know that they did it on purpose. After multiple follow ups there was no improvement. One fine day i file a RTI on friday noon and saturday RTO called to my number and with in 10 mins ownership transfer done..
7-8 years back when I had to renew my passport I had to pay 500Rs as chai pani. No wonder many of us dont have any respect for Police as we have for Army.

once paid Rs. 50 outside district centre in janakpuri for wrong direction driving, in 2012-2013
mai har baar paise dekar soch leta hu chalo bechara ab iss paise se beti ki shadi kr payega!!

Bhai, padhe likhe smart and tech savy hone ka kya fayda agar forcefully bribe hee deni hai.
Govt has deployed enough mechanisms, tweet, mail, PGPortal and what not.
Jitna effort ye thread likhne mei lgaya, utne mei 2 tweet/mail krne the and everything could have been sorted easily.

for job when there was pol verification , the constable asked for 500, then callled me in thana had me chit chat (he use to tell that i earn near about 2L/month ,how , find some stolen item ask for bribe from thief and profit ), then asked me give me 500 , i said no then 200,100 then Rs. 50 , i said i dont have single paisa in my pocket , then he asked to provide one daaru bottle for thanedar later, i spend the month playing GTA vice city game on PC, and watching sunny leone and MTV roadies as i was just chill at that time and so fierce that wud had complain to CBI if the verification wasnt completed in month
there sure wud be a different hell for ego corrupt po-lice peep-holes
In my case he said that he generally asks for 500/-. But because my father's not at home that time he said he is only charging me 300/-.
I only have him 200/- 
(or it is like he asked 400 and I gave 300)
After seeing all these passport related bribes, even I was told I should be prepared to give 500 atleast to the verification officer. After all verification done I tried to handover the money, he refused and said its free of cost.
I told him that it's ok I insist as a token of appreciation, he still refused and wished me 'good luck' and left.
I applied for Passport in Pune while studying in college. I had to go to police station around 3-4 km but no no one asked for any bribe.
In naxal affected areas there is additional cid verification. And they dont even ask for bribe openly. However they expect and if you dont give they dont insist but will definitely file an adverse report

I think there should be a separate department for verification of address etc in case of passport. Everything should be digital with geo tagging of location so they don't call you to their location.
I think going digital will be the solution for that. Also A feedback form at the last step of application process will increase the speed.
By doing this the verification officer is also at stake. His job also will be in trouble if he doesn't do the needful in that given timeframe.

No bribe was given by my mom. She wasn't home when the police came for verification. Then she went to post office to collect her passport directly the next day before office. Thing is, we weren't even living in that home since 10 years. It was my grandma's home. So we were ready to pay bribe.
I was on bike. Took a left turn. Was under impression that left turn does not require signal to turn green. Traffic police caught me. He told fine was 200. But at that time I had only 100 with me. I showed him 100 and asked for an nearby ATM. He took 100 and went ahead. I could not understand for a second. Then I started my bike and drove off.
1 in college in MNR allahabad , that was done for a bunch of students, i dont remember giving cash.
second verification was in home and some inspector extracted 500 from my father.
10 years later in 2017 , Passport process was corruption free .. it was like visiting a bank ..
When I came out of passport office, got sms that my passport is dispatched.
LIU visit was after i received passport and when he asked money , i told him to F$@k off .
I had done my passport verification in 2011. I dint give any money and got the passport within few days.. Its now a transparent process and i dont think anyone can stop if you have correct documents in place.
I gave 1500 to police for police verification and 1500 to LIU(LOCAL INVESTIGATION UNIT) so total 3000

i even asked my uncle who was also in Police department and he said it's normal.
but i managed in 500 
Otherwise they would have to send the documents (mainly DOB Certificate, saying its fake) to respective authorities for verification and verification will move only when they receive confirmation from them.. and no idea how long it would take.
Simply said No problem, do whatever you need to. I am in no hurry.
Got Msg that passport verification is successful within 1week.
Problem is he said it won't move forward and you believed it.. You had paid application fee, they will have to move forward the file. And if they say verification failed they will need to give reason for that, and unless there is some genuine issue with your documents You don't need to worry.
