Can anyone tell me what defines “Middle Class” in today’s times?

Different people use different definitions.

I would say any household having assets over 50 lakhs and upto 25 crores comes under middle class (obviously at different levels within the class). This thread excludes upper middle class from what I perceive.

Note- This definition is only based on Indian context

Every alternate Saturday’s, some times a year, we would go out to have family lunch at this restaurant in Calcutta, called the The Gupta Brothers.

The dal makhani with peas pulao and dum aloo and kadhai paneer was the best I’ve ever had in my life. No extra oil or mirch masala and great quantity. Peas pulao were so nice, of basmati and fresh peas.

And then after we were done, then came the part which used to make us feel super rich – the waiter would give us hand wash bowls with warm water with a slice lime in it.

The first time we thought it was to drink for digestion maybe sweat_smile joy but then father told the rest of us that it was for washing hands.

That was one thing that used to make us feel so rich joy

Great times. Been almost 20 years since those days.

Also one other thing was the stuff that airlines would do in the time before takeoff – warm wet lime scented towels to freshen up, imli candies, Fruiti tetrapack, chai/coffee before the actual meal was served when in air.

Indian Airlines, Jet Airways used to do this back in pre 2005 era. Good times.

This the best thread of all I had read on DD.

My uncles house was near a school with a party plot where marriage function used to be organized. Whenever I visit there any evening we saw any mandap setup and lighting we dressed up like good humans, enter the mandap and relish in 3 idiot’s style with a feeling that we have robbed the wealthiest bank in the world.

About paid luxury it was 3 panipuri for 1 rupee and the most luxurious part was the free masala puri I got at the end…..

My childhood condition was below middle class. I never had the Money to buy things even in loot prices.I always wished to find a job so that i can buy needy/wishlist things in loot prices. Today i am a graduate from IIT and working professional and i earn decent six digit salary. The mindset that i developed during past is helping me buying things at cheaper prices. I am a proud desidime member from last several years. To answer this thread " buying even needy things at loot prices was luxury for me once"

Car was luxury. Back in 2014-15, ola uber came with many free rides/referrals offers. That was definitely a show off moment infront of family, relatives, padosis 🤣 It was more of a proud moment, I was like by using my skills(coupon search) I can make you all travel in a car for free..😛

now that we own a car, it's no longer considered a luxury.

I had a miserable childhood. I slept on the footpath and outside the closed shops at night. Many a times policemen came up to me and kicked me out of the footpath saying that it's not the place to sleep. Surviving only on water for several days and wearing torn-up clothes wasn't easy. I still remember the day when I had only one rupee and fifty paisa in my pocket. I ate 2 rotis with little bit curry (only curry nothing included with it, like the curry in peas and potato sabzi, the dhaba owner removed the peas and potato from it and gave me only curry). What else can one expect to get for only one rupee and fifty paisa?

At that time whenever I saw an aeroplane flying in the sky I used to tell myself I too will travel by air one day. Now, whenever I travel by air (around 10 to 12 times a year) it feels like a luxury to me. I don't remember how many times I have travelled by air but everytime I board the flight it reminds me of my past.

It wasn't an easy journey for me. I lost my self-confidence and it took me years to gain it back. I still get the flashbacks of my past but somehow I cope with it, and I never forget where I came from.

@desiman @keshav1988696 @panchabhut @pratikkry Back in those days having a black and white Crown company shutter TV was a luxury, having cable connection, to increase number of channel to that B&W TV by installing channel multiplier from TV repairing shop, looking at others huge colour TV set when we had B&W TV, having VCR, watching movies in theaters in early 90’s,

nowadays I think (not buying) maintaining IPhone, buying decent standard quality smartwatch, travelling by flights, and yeah getting Loot deal in DD is luxury.

For me luxury is not about having dinners in 4/5 star restaurant.. for me it is about buy everything you like whether it is a clothing brand( if you like something of Armani.. go and get it ) or an automotive Vehicle .. if are still compromising on things which you want, you ain’t have luxury or you pretending to live a luxurious life.. think about it.. this is the only reason i voted for no because i still think twice before buying anything..
