Gift Voucher Fraud - Advice Needed

Hi guys!

I just found out that my Thomas Cook 11k gift voucher has only a balance of 2k left in it. OMG. WTF confused

Actually I bought 11k thomas cook voucher in last year end from woohoo. But due to some technical error, it wasn’t applicable. They said to use later. But afterwards due to lockdown, no travel happened.

Now prev month they sent a msg to use my voucher before expiry in Dec. Upon checking at that time it had its full balance and loaded in my woohoo account.

But yesterday upon checking it. I found that it was not showing in my woohoo. But from order history I reloaded the voucher, WTF! found that it is showing 2k as balance for the same gift card.

At the time I thought this could be technical error. But today upon calling them and asking for the info, I found that it has been used on 3 Oct and that is the info they can give on call. Rest is needed to be known by mail support (still waiting for that).

I don’t know what to do now. I was going to get the validity extended, but some fraud used it. Any advice to how to claim back the amount and where to file the complaint would be much appreciated. I know the cyber complaint option of gov.in.

P.S I didn’t share the voucher with anyone. And Woohoo was the sole platform which had its card numbers and pin.

Looks like some inside job at woohoo, another reason why I never suggest anyone to get large value vouchers from anywhere other than official site(e.g.amazon gv from amazon & flipkart gv from flipkart).

Yup similar thing happened to me by Bank of Baroda Wallet, M-clip, 4-5 years ago.

They issued already used voucher for my purchase. Took a lot of hassle to get them changed.

Seems like this time is similar, but Woohoo is the retail arm of Quickcilver, who issues vouchers worth Crs, why would such a thing happen with them?

Issuing vouchers to a mnc giant & issuing vouchers to a typical person are two different things, same reason why people complain about hp after sales support but hundreds of companies using them as contracted vendor for their office PCs don’t.

Woohoo accounts are getting hacked and GVs stored in accounts are getting removed and used or added to another account. Do not store any GV in Woohoo account. Write down the card no. and PIN/claim code in secure location/offline and delete all stored card from woohoo account.
OP – report by mail to woohoo support that there has been a fraud and hacking of your account.

how do you know? Have you heard of some other hacks of woohoo?

If so why woohoo isn’t doing anything?

In my case this voucher was bought and loaded in woohoo only.

Yes I have heard from several.
I think where it is reported, matter is taken up by specialised team in woohoo. But they ask for KYC, purchase proof etc.

Yes, got the call and they were asking for KYC and password change.
The guy was telling me that due to some heavy traffic, system automatically blocked the whole voucher (trying to cover up, it was really 2k balance left of 11k and call cc said 9k used).

I guess there has been some hack attack on Woohoo, but they are giving some excuse.

He also later told me that this had happened to many customers.

I am still awaiting the special team response. In the meanwhile I also mailed Thomas cook for fraud.

I am never going to buy any big amount voucher from Woohoo and Flipkart as well (heard they block without any valid reasons sometime), it has gone too risky to trust them.

Yes there seems to be some major hacking. Woohoo site now requires 2 factor login with OTP in registered mobile no.

I dont know about site but they did require OTP in app.
Will they refund the gift card without much hassle?

That means you didn’t buy from woohoo…just loaded on it? Better you should have loaded in flipkart. But another concern is that they sometimes block account so it is risker there as well.

In my case it was thomas cook who doesnt allow loading…so I had to keep in wallet.

No solution or call or mail response from woohoo, just the one initial call for KYC and password change…In the meanwhile I also mailed this to thomascook to halt the services used by fraud…they are also investigating.

Last resort would be Online cyber fraud complaint on government.
Now I think I should have bought a Digital wallet insurance which we get as option on paytm and mobikwik.

Seeing your post, I too checked my woohoo account. My Nykaa Rs. 1000 is used up and Uber Rs. 500 added to anothet account. Surely Woohoo has been hacked, may be by their own employees

Why are you guys storing GV in third party wallets.? It’s simple and safe to take screenshots and store them in secure vault in apps like Lastpass, Enpass, etc. Or just write them down like old school.

They are extended the response time by giving excuse or asking proofs. Today they sent a reply afyer 10 days of reporting that " they have forwarded the issue to concerned team". I mean WTF, who were they if not concerned team, and what were they doing for 10 days.

Now I am thinking about reporting them to government Ministry of Home Affairs, https://cybercrime.g...n/

Guys you tell me what you are going to do.

I am also contemplating lodging an online FIR against Woohoo with the conversation history and transaction details. If multiple users complain at the same time, Police may take action. Also post messages of Woohoo thefts on their Twitter handle warning other users not to buy from Woohoo

Today they responded stating that it will take some more time to investigate
