Chhath Puja: The Festival of Faith and Science
Chhath Puja is a four-day Hindu festival celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, UP & Nepal. It is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and is believed to bring prosperity, good health, and happiness.
The festival begins on the fourth day of the month of Kartik (October-November) with the Nahaya-Khai ritual. On this day, devotees take a holy bath and eat a simple meal of rice, lentils, and pumpkin.
The next day is Kharna, when devotees fast for the entire day and break their fast in the evening with a meal of roti, kheer, and other sweets.
On the third day, Chhath Puja is celebrated. Devotees wake up early in the morning and go to a river or pond to offer prayers and arati to the rising sun. In the evening, they return to the river or pond to offer prayers and arati to the setting sun.
The festival concludes on the fourth day with Uttarayan, when devotees take another holy bath and end their fast.
Religious significance
Chhath Puja is a deeply religious festival for Hindus. It is believed that the Sun God is a symbol of life, power, and prosperity. By worshipping Surya, devotees seek his blessings for good health, happiness, and prosperity for themselves, their families, and their communities.
