Congratulations! Your HDFC Bank Credit Card xxxx is now LifeTime FREE. You will lose this benefit if you discontinue Smartpay/ General Insurance/Easy Emi.

I received this message from HDFC Bank. Isn’t it supposed to be like, once it is lifetime free and then I remove from SmartPay, it will be lifetime free forever?

Earlier it used to be so.. But i think since December they have changed.. Not 100% sure though, let other senior diners confirm.

Even earlier, they did not honor the terms. And every call to their customer care end with one thing saying their back end team need to check. That back end team is likely sleeping all the time or may be it doesn’t even exist. Eventually I deactivated smart pay, opened savings max making the card LTF.

How does opening savings max account makes the cc as ltf ?

Yes. It is LTF now. I can remove the biller and it will remain LTF.

But somewhere I had read that the condition has now changed. You have to keep a biller always to keep it LTF for new cards. Check the TnC.

Last week, I had received written confirmation from the customer helpdesk.

“We take this opportunity to inform you that your card will be offered as a Life Time Free Card if you register your credit card for Smartpay. We wish to clarify that Smart-Pay has to be in active status so that the card status will be changed to life time free and Cancelling Smart-pay later will result in levy of Membership fee on card. We seek your understanding in this regard.”

There’s no mention of how many billers we need to add. So, I assume the minimum requirement is 1 to keep smartpay active. My case is a card upgrade, not a new card.

Similar have received for our upgraded card (moneyback to millennia), when sent email to convert in ltf. Nothing mentioned about number of biller and duration. I will ask again for clarification.

“We infer from your email that you seek for Life time free Millennia credit card. We assure that Bank is earnest in its efforts to resolve customer’s complaints and in view of the same, we are willing to convert the existing card to life time free card if registered for Smartpay activation. We request you to register and revert back for us to assist further.”
