During lockdown or quarantine our normal routine is disrupted. Many feel lonely & stress may increase. Here are some ways to remain active & positive and reduce stress.
1. Stay in touch with friends and family
- Don’t isolate yourself completely.
- Interact with friends & family through different mediums like mobile, text or video chat.
- Communicate your concerns & feelings
2. Take care of your body
- keep your body in shape through exercise
- Meditate
- Yoga and Stretching
- Sleep on time
- Online workouts
- Fitness apps
3. Eat healthy -
- Have balanced meals
- Keep hydrated
- Avoid excessive alcohol and smoke
- Eat antioxidant rich foods
4. Engage in stress relieving activities
- Play with pets
- Read
- Maintain a journal
- Laugh
- Meditation
5. Establish Routines
Quarantine disrupts normal routine of many persons. Try to form some routine in day to day activities. Have short term goals & work to achieve them.
6. Unwind & entertain for some time
- Play games on mobile or laptop
- Interact through social channels like Facebook & Twitter
- Watch TV & online content ( Don’t overdo these activities as it can trigger eye stress and sad feelings in some)
7. Stay informed but don’t overdo it – Keep yourself aware of events and information through news & social channels but limit your exposure. Too much news about pandemic may lead to stress or depression.
8. Keep medical supplies -
- Stock essential items like first aid kits, sanitiser, masks and gloves
- Have sufficient supplies of medicine for your pre existing illness.
9. Focus on the positives
- Give importance to good & positive news
- Appreciate work of medical personnel and other essential services providers.
10. Break up your day — Try to compartmentalize your day by planning different tasks and activities to avoid boredom.
11. Focus on kids – If you’ve kids then realize lockdown is hard on them too.
- Ensure they have a routine
- Monitor their eating habits
- Make sure they’re getting adequate sleep
12. Help others -
- Do small chores.
- Ask elderly if they need supplies before going for your own grocery run (without risking unnecessary exposure).
- Be part of online support groups.
13. Do creative & productive things
- Indoor gardening
- Cooking
- Writing in a diary
- Painting or colouring
- Keep house clean and tidy
14. Be kind – Lockdown is hard and it’s easy to get upset. Be understanding and act kindly towards others in household especially women & children. Report domestic violence to concerned authorities.
15. Have a plan -
- Make a basic plan to arrange grocery & other essential items.
- Also prepare a financial plan.
16. Take one day at a time – Try not too think too far ahead into the future. Focus on small positives & remember you’re not only one experiencing lockdown.
Be active, be positive, be careful, be kind.
