Onions make debt-ridden Karnataka farmer crorepati

Mallikarjuna invested Rs 15 lakh, hoping to reap a profit of Rs 5-10 lakh. But he hit a jackpot.
Onion farmer made Rs 5 lakh profit last year
Mallikarjuna is now a celebrity in the farming circles in Chitradurga, 200km from Bengaluru, after local media reported his success story. “I have cleared my debt and I am planning to build a house. I want to buy more land to expand the agricultural work in the coming years,” he said.

Lucky person who did not fall into middlemen / agents while selling onions. Other farmers should learn from him on how to avoid middlemen.

since the prices have soared to 300%.. this means ideally when he was expecting 25 lakh return ( 10 lakh profit) . now he would be getting 25*3 = 75 lakh. so it is safe to assume his jackpot amount must hv been north of 75l

also he reaped 240 tonnes of onion

“He had reaped a bumper crop of 240 tonnes of onion (around 20 truckloads) while the price was racing towards Rs 200 per kg.”

which at rs 200 would be worth 4.8cr. now to calculate the net profit u need to minus labourres cost , irrigation cost , investment cost , transport cost ,also consider the avg payout at rs 100 per kg, etc which would still make him north of 1cr in worst scenarios

I doubt he would have sold it at 200 rupees, but can safely assume his selling price to be 100 rupees, still it comes at atleast 2 crores, big money

Damn. Good for him. I quite clearly remember last season a farmer committed suicide because onions fell below 20 rupees or something.

And I wonder how many Mallikarjunas there are! I bought a used gfx card from a seller called Mallikarjuna on Erodov and from then whenever I saw that name I thought it’s him probably. But I’ve since found at least half a dozen references to different Mallikarjunas.

What? You actually think 100 rupee onion profit is truly going into the pockets of the farmers? Meh. Also even if it did it’s pointless as in the process the common people, us, the consumers’ pocket is unjustifiedly cut exorbitantly. You can’t suck the money from masses and make somebody richer.

However, yes, under this government every dirty and shoddy practice is at its peak.

It’s not only about onions you can reap profit from anything if you have business mind inside you. Just like other jobs farmers farm and sell. They never think how they can make big money..

well their aim definitely is to make the poor richer, and richer poorer , against the law of nature which makes rich rich and poor poor . so clearly they succeed by sucking money from onion eating lavish rich ppl to farmers.. Now thy have the vote of farmers and atleast imigrant hindus in their vote bank

I dont think he would face such losses to nullify this complete gain, until and unless of course he gets too greedy without any calculations
