An elephant that was pregnant died in Kerala, standing in water, last Wednesday, after she faced one of the most brutal forms of animal abuse. She ate a pineapple filled with firecracker, offered to her allegedly by some locals. The fruit exploded in her mouth, leading to the inevitable tragedy. The incident came to light after a forest officer in northern Kerala’s Malappuram district narrated the details of the horrific death on social media.
The wild elephant had left the forest, meandering into a nearby village in search of food. As she walked on the streets, she was offered the cracker-laden pineapple by locals. The elephant walked around in the village, in searing pain and in hunger. “She trusted everyone. When the pineapple she ate exploded, she must have been shocked not thinking about herself, but about the child she was going to give birth to in 18 to 20 months,” forest officer Mohan Krishnan, who was part of the Rapid Response Team to rescue the elephant, wrote on Facebook.
So powerful was the cracker explosion in her mouth that her tongue and mouth were badly injured. The elephant walked around in the village, in searing pain and in hunger. She was unable to eat anything because of her injuries.
“She didn’t harm a single human being even when she ran in searing pain in the streets of the village. She didn’t crush a single home. This is why I said, she is full of goodness,” Mr Krishnan wrote in an emotional note in Malayalam, along with photos of the elephant. The elephant eventually walked up to the Velliyar River and stood there. Photos showed the elephant standing in the river with her mouth and truck in water, perhaps for some relief from the unbearable pain. The forest officer said she must have done this to avoid flies and other insects on her injuries.
There’s no end to depravity of humans.

Every life should be loved and protected (as far as possible). Animals/birds or other species must have right to live.

You should know that wherever you find human beings, you can see good things and bad things. It’s universal. A single human being will most certainly do good and bad things in his / her life time. It’s a mixed bag.
That being said, my dear brother, I urge you to travel to kerala once. I am sure whatever I write here, it won’t change your views. You will have to travel from trivandrum to kasaragod and get to know the people. I am now here in chandigarh, otherwise I would have taken you myself to give you the full kerala experience.
A lot of people would say kerala is “God’s own country” . I would say it’s not “God’s own country”, it’s “Gods’ own country”. I couldn’t experience a harmony of religions else where. There are plenty of mosques sharing same compound walls with temples. Hell, there’s even a ritual for the sabarimala temple devotees to enter inside a mosque, bow and then visit the temple. Muslims and christians wait eagerly to eat the aravana prasadam,ritual based offerings from other temples like attukal temple etc. You wouldn’t believe how much money Muslims and christians spend to buy the aravana prasadam from sabarimala temple. A ritual done by women attukal temple devotees extend to kilometres and some lines of women do the rituals inside mosque’s and christian church’s property. There are tons of malayalam christian devotional songs sung by hindus and muslims. These songs are played inside the church in the middle of mass. I could just talk on and on about these.
Again, whatever I write, it won’t change your mind. So brother you have to go and spend time in there atleast once.
Heart wrenching
Really sad incident. Humans need to understand the value of others lives, be it humans or animals. Culprits should be caught and given strict punishment.

Felling sorry for mother and child elephant, and ashamed of human being, we are becoming cruel day by day, he killed 2 life just for his fun, why cant we treat hime like this, filled his every possible space in body with crackers and burn, let see how he reacts. Can’t even imagine the horrific pain of that silent mother and an unborned child
We teach our kids to throw stones at street dogs , tie crackers at theirs tail and burn it .
So act like this was very normal .
Strict actions should be taken so that in near future this kind of people (far less than an animal) think 1000 times before doing this kind of brutality.

We humans as a whole are less accommodating & tend to diminish/destroy the surroundings (nature & animals) we live in. Though many of us are kind & work for welfare still a sizeable number of people indulge in cruelty. Those who show no respect to lives of other beings should be brought to justice then only we can help in building a more tolerant mindset for future generations.
This cruel act was committed at a time when most people in world are experiencing some sort of difficulty due to virus. One would’ve assumed that these harsh times would have made these people more understanding towards plight of other living beings but these people are beyond redemption.
Millions if not billions of animals died in Australia’s bushfire then Amazon rainforest was systematically burnt in Brazil where many endangered species live..More we disrupt the nature more will be our suffering..

But we don’t have any other options as we are omnivorous so we have to eat to survive.

But torturing or killing animals brutally for fun or religion rituals or for businesses including endenger animals should be baned.

Elephants are one of the less agressive species of creature and once upon a time lifesaver for human species. And above all she was pregnant. Are we so blind that we forgot we are called social animals. Where social fits in ?

Some of the analogies (examples) given here are so devoid of logic & common sense that it’s laughable. Whatever ones belief or eating habits , whether one likes junior, big or grand we as humans in 21st century can at least ensure that when we kill animals for consumption we do it in such a way that it causes them least pain. If we can’t make this change then something is not right either with the habit or belief.
Why do animals need to die? Just so we can satisfy our taste buds and earn money?

Just read an email from one of my friends up here in north, who is a hardcore BJP supporter. I didn’t know that the death of a poor creature could be used for political purposes and to induce hate against muslims. I am not on any social networking sites, so I didn’t know this news was twisted this much. The truth about this horrific incident is still under investigation.
Elephant died in the palakkad district’s Ambalappara village, yet cunningly changed the name to Malappuram district that is having higher muslim population.
Ambalappara villagers do use explosive ridden foods to drive away wild animals from destroying their crops and coming to their villages. But they usually aim that for wild pigs. I don’t know anything about the elephant’s case. I did my engineering electronics project during 2007-2008 in palakkad ITI Ltd kanchikode Telephone factory . But I don’t have any friends in palakkad and Malappuram districts. I will update some more information about this case after I talk to a friend in kozhikode. My friend in his mail was saying that we kerala people are killing elephants every day for fun. Fact – 90 elephants died in kerala in the year of 2019, most of them are because of age,diseases, accidents caused by trains in forest sides. 8 cases are unnatural which includes incidents were wild elephants eating fruits with explosives meant for wild pigs. We have lots of elephants in our forests, that’s why this many deaths. But that doesn’t mean we are killing them. In 2018 I have driven 3200Kms in my car by myself from trivandrum to chandigarh. Number of cow’s carcases I have seen by the side of the road, during my journey in northern parts were similar to the numbers I mentioned above. When I stop my car for resting, I could see plenty of them in pain with various wounds. Does that mean people in north doing that? No.So kind request from my side. Please stop hate against any religion or groups or gender or choices. You hate them, they hate you back. You show compassion, they do the same.
When someone says “’I am proud to be an Indian”, hope that person knows the meaning of all the things in that picture.
