[Query] Can we use a 4G sim in 3G phone and use 3G data?

Hi Guys,
I am getting messages from operator Airtel that they have upgraded their network and I need to upgrade to 4G sim in order to be able to use data services. According to them after 7th November, I won’t be able to use Airtel data plan. Now, I want to know as I have a 2G/3G phone, so
If I upgrade to new 4G sim, then would I be able to use it on my phone in first place? for calls, sms.
Secondly, if above is no problem then would I be able to activate 3G plan on 4G sim?

Airtel has not started VoLTE yet. So all data and SMS are handled over 2G/3G only.
To my knowledge, all Airtel data plans provide same benefit, whether on 4G, 3G or 2G. However, please check whether in your circle, Airtel 2G/3G license is going to expire. In that case, there my be an issue.

offcourse you can use it, they are making all customer to use 4g simcard for better network reception.
Airtel 4G simcard can be used in any mobile, we can use 2g, 3g, 4g(if compatible) not like JIO 
it is very easy 1 min work, go to any airtel store with number. they will type 4GSIMSWAP #16 digit no and send it to 121.. you are done..
p.s. if you wont change the simcard, there wont be any problem… they are just spamming the inbox
I already have a 4G upgraded SIM working.. then also they are sending upgrade SMS.. when I went to the retailer he said you need not change SIM; but the SMS has a different story. What should I do.?

You can use 4g sim in 4g/3g/even 2g phone.

airtel is shutting down its 3g tower in many places so they are sending sms to upgread to 4g.
You will be able to use 2g on ur newly converted 4g sim when airtel shut down its 3g tower.
means until volte roll out fully (which will take a year atleast) during internet access if we make a call then internnet will get disconnected during call
You can get 4g sim without any charges at home itself.
( I requested three 4g sim and all were delivered at home without any cost )
