As India battles its worst enemy in recent history, the Union government from May 1 will launch its ambitious and most crucial phase of the coronavirus vaccination drive, touted as one of the largest in the world, for all above 18 years.
From May 1st, every single Indian adult i.e. above 18 years of age would be eligible for the Covid jab. There will be no walk-ins for vaccination under this phase as the government is expecting a huge number due to the size of the age bracket to be covered under this phase. To get a vaccination, one needs to register on the Cowin Portal. Though there was some confusion over the date of the registration process initially, the Centre has clarified that the CoWin registration for the 18+ individuals will begin from April 28.
Registration for 18 plus to begin on http://cowin....in, Aarogya Setu App & UMANG App at 4 PM on 28th April. Appointments at State Govt centers & Private centers depending on how many vaccination centers are ready on 1st May for Vaccination of 18 plus.
How to Register through CoWIN portal
1. Visit the CoWIN website and click on Register/Sign in yourself.
2. Add your mobile number and click on Get OTP. After receiving the OTP, type the digits on the site, and click on ‘Verify’.
3. Enter all your details, including photo ID proof, name, gender, and year of birth on the ‘Register for Vaccination’ page. Once this is done, hit Register.
4. After you register, you will get the option to schedule an appointment. Click on ‘Schedule’ next to the name of the person registered.
5. Add your pin code and click on Search. The centres in the added pin code will appear.
6. Select the date and time and click on ‘Confirm’.
It is important to note that users can add up to four members through one login and can easily reschedule an appointment.
How to Register through the Aarogya Setu app
1. Open the Aarogya Setu app and click on the CoWIN tab present on the home screen.
2. Select ‘Vaccination Registration’ and then enter your phone number. You will receive an OTP and then you can proceed to verify yourself.
3. On the ‘Register for Vaccination’ page, enter all details, including photo ID proof, name, gender, and year of birth. Click on ‘Register’.
4. After you register, you will get the option to schedule an appointment. Click on Schedule next to the name of the person registered.
5. Add your pin code and click on Search. The centres in the added pin code will appear.
6. Select the date and time and click on ‘Confirm’.
- Can I book my appointment for vaccination from April 28?
- No. The link is open only for registration. The appointments or scheduling of vaccination will be available from May 1 onwards.
- Can I get a vaccination without an appointment?
- The government says that citizens aged 18-44 years should mandatorily register themselves and schedule appointments online before vaccination. On-spot registration or walk-in facility is currently not allowed at private hospitals for the 18-44 years age group.
- Will I get an appointment after May 1?
- From May 1, state governments and private hospitals will procure 50 percent of total doses directly from the open market to vaccinate the 18-44 year age group. The availability of slots will depend on the availability of doses.
- Due to limited doses, several states will have their own priority groups within the 18-44 years age group. This state-specific information will soon get reflected on the Co-win when you can make appointments.
- Is there any registration charge to be paid?
- No, there is no registration charge.
- How many people can be registered in the Co-WIN portal through one mobile number?
- Up to 4 people can be registered for vaccination using the same mobile number.
- Can I register for vaccination without an Aadhaar card?
- Yes, you can register on the Co-WIN portal using any of the following ID proofs: Aadhaar card ; Driving License; PAN card; Passport; Pension Passbook; NPR Smart Card; and Voter ID (EPIC).
- Is vaccination free at all vaccination centres?
- Currently, vaccination is free at government hospitals and charged at INR 250 in private hospitals for citizens aged 45 years and above. This will cease to exist from May 1, and even those above the age of 45 years will have to pay at private facilities that cost fixed by the private hospital.
- For people between 18 to 44 years, the States will announce the policy relating to payment. Most states have announced that they will offer it for free at government centres.
- However, at private vaccination sites, the cost will be decided by the private hospitals and you can see the price of each vaccine at the time of booking.
- Can I check the price of the vaccine?
- Yes. The system from May 1 will show the price of the vaccine below the name of the vaccination centre at the time of scheduling an appointment.
- Can I choose the vaccine?
- Yes. The System will show the vaccine being administered in each vaccination centre at the time of scheduling an appointment. Citizens can choose the vaccination centre as per their choice of vaccine being administered However, the choice will not be available at the Government facilities.
- What are the options if one citizen is aged 45 or above and another is aged 18 or above?
- If one citizen is aged 45 or above and another citizen is aged 18 to 44 years and both want to schedule a combined appointment, then only private paid vaccination centres or vaccination centres as per state’s policy will be made available. However, it may happen that some hospitals which are catering to people with 45 years or more may not allow the booking of appointments for people with lesser age. In that case you may make bookings one by one.
- If I am Covid-19 positive, when can I get my vaccine shot?
- The centre has specified three categories of temporary contraindications. For people in these categories, vaccination is to be deferred for four-eight weeks after recovery. These categories are: persons having active symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection; Covid-19 patients who have been given anti-SARS-Cov-2 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma; and acutely unwell and hospitalised — with or without intensive care — patients due to “any illness”.

Germany recommends combination of AstraZeneca, mRNA shots
Germany is recommending that all people who get a first shot of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine switch to a different type of vaccine for their second shot. The aim is to increase the speed and effectiveness of vaccinations as the more contagious delta variant spreads.
Health Minister Jens Spahn conferred with his colleagues from Germany’s 16 states on Friday, the day after the country’s standing committee on vaccination issued a draft recommendation.
In a statement, the committee said that “according to current study results,” the immune response from a mixture of AstraZeneca with an mRNA vaccine was “significantly superior” to that from two doses of AstraZeneca.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share his thoughts at the CoWIN Global Conclave on Monday as India offers CoWIN as a digital platform to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Health Authority (NHA) informed on Sunday.
“We are elated to announce that Hon’ble PM @ narendramodi would be sharing his thoughts on #CoWINGlobalConclave as India offers #CoWIN as a digital public good to the world to combat #COVID19. Join #CoWINGlobalConclave on July 5, 1500 hrs (IST),” the NHA tweeted.
The virtual meet will start at 3 pm tomorrow and will see participation from health and technology experts representing countries across the globe.
“The Conclave aims to share India’s experience with regards to Universal Vaccination to fight Covid-19 through Co-WIN platform,” as per the NHA website.
CoWIN was seen as developed in India as the central IT system for strategizing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating Covid-19 vaccination across the country.
Recently, many countries have shown interest in using the ‘tech backbone of India’s Vaccination Drive’, the NHA website said, adding that India is excited to join hands with the world to win over Covid-19 together with Co-WIN. (ANI)

‘Sunday syndrome’ – CoWin data shows sharp slump in total jabs
On June 27, India saw 17,15,971 corona shots. On July 4, the numbers further slumped with CoWin data showing 14,77,828 jabs.
India is taking a Sunday break from Covid vaccination, the latest CoWin data shows. Since the launch of the new vaccine programme on June 21st, the nation has witnessed fewer Covid jabs on Sundays.
On June 27, India saw 17,15,971 corona shots. On July 4, the numbers further slumped with CoWin data showing 14,77,828 jabs.
While there are no clear-cut answers as to why there is such as drop in vaccinations on Sundays, the last two weeks definitely shows a pattern.
May be because nurse and doctors taking early day off. My brother booked last week, but when he reached there at 1 pm, he was sent back stating doctors have gone for lunch and will be back tomorrow. Even after onsite registration, everyday around 100 vaccine are still left out of daily quota, whereas, people complaining about unavailability.
Also to further note, from last many days, I can see vaccines stock of covishield under 2nd dose for 18 to 44 age group. For 18+ it started on 1 May, then how come any of them is eligible for 2nd dose.

India offering CoWIN to world as tech tool that can be used for greater public good, says Vardhan
India is offering the CoWIN platform to the world as a technology tool that can be used for greater public good as the need of the hour is to speed up the pace of vaccinating people against COVID-19, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Monday.
Addressing the virtual Global CoWIN Conclave, he said India is inching closer to administering 36 crore Covid vaccine doses, a feat achieved in less than six months since the launch of its vaccination drive, while asserting that “we are committed to inoculating our entire adult population by December”.
The conclave was attended by dignitaries from 142 countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis and Zambia. (PTI)

Recipe for even more powerful COVID-19 vaccines found
Scientists have found a recipe for even more effective and powerful vaccines against the coronavirus and its rapidly emerging variants, based on the way human cells activate the immune system in response to COVID-19 infection.
Researchers from Boston University and the Broad Institute of Harvard University in the US noted that it is the first real look at exactly what types of ‘red flags’ the human body uses to enlist the help of T cells sent out by the immune system to destroy infected cells.
Until now, COVID-19 vaccines have been focused on activating a different type of immune cell, B cells, which are responsible for creating antibodies. The researchers noted that developing vaccines to activate the other arm of the immune system — the T cells — could dramatically increase immunity against coronavirus, and importantly, its variants.
The findings, published in the journal Cell, suggest that current vaccines might lack some important bits of viral material capable of triggering a holistic immune response in the human body. – PTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the government is preparing its Covid vaccination platform — CoWIN — as an open source and soon it will be available to all countries.
“Indian civilization considers the whole world as one family. This pandemic has made many people realize the fundamental truth of this philosophy. That’s why, our technology platform for Covid vaccination — the platform we call CoWIN — is being prepared to be made open source,” he said while addressing Global CoWin Conclave via video conference.
Dynavax to supply its CpG 1018 adjuvant for Biological E’s COVID-19 Vaccine Candidate
Dynavax Technologies Corporation a Nasdaq-listed firm, and Biological E.Limited (BE) on Tuesday announced the execution of a commercial supply agreement of the former’s CpG 1018 advanced adjuvant, for use in BEs subunit COVID-19 vaccine candidate, Corbevax.
The city based vaccine maker, in a release, said the commercial supply agreement extends through 2022 and includes vaccine doses for delivery in 2021, which were manufactured under the previously announced funding agreement between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and Dynavax. As fresh outbreaks are reported around the world due to the spread of the Delta variant, Malaysian govt has sounded alert over the surge in cases due to Lamba variant.
Malaysian officials have said that Lambda variant of the coronavirus is far more deadly than the Delta variant, which was first detected in India last October. At present, cases directly related to the Lambda variant have been confirmed in over 30 nations.
Covid19 Live Tracker: Sri Lanka gives Pfizer shots to some as 2nd dose
Sri Lanka is administering Pfizer shots to people who were left waiting after receiving their first AstraZeneca doses earlier this year. Mixing two vaccines is still being studied for its effectiveness, but Sri Lanka health officials approved it due to a severe AstraZeneca shortage.
Sri Lanka received 26,000 doses of Pfizer on Monday as the first batch of 5 million shots to be received this year. It started rolling them out Wednesday to residents 55 and older in the capital Colombo.
About 384,000 people were fully vaccinated before Sri Lanka ran out of AstraZeneca doses with 540,000 people only partially vaccinated. Channa Jayasumana, the state minister overseeing pharmaceuticals, said getting Pfizer as the 2nd dose was optional and a consignment of AstraZeneca vaccine was expected this month.
Sri Lanka also has used Sinopharm and the Russian Sputnik V to vaccinate people against COVID-19. Sri Lanka has seen a sharp increase of coronavirus infections and deaths since April. It has recorded 266,499 cases with 3,268 fatalities overall. – AP
Mutations help Epsilon coronavirus variant evade vaccine immunity: Study
Three mutations in the spike protein of Epsilon variant of SARS-CoV-2 help the virus to evade the protection offered by current vaccines or past COVID-19 infection, according to a study. The mutations also provide the variant of concern named CAL.20C a means to totally evade specific monoclonal or lab-made antibodies used in clinics, and reduce the effectiveness of antibodies from the plasma of vaccinated people, the researchers said.
The team, led by researchers at the University of Washington in the US, visualised the variant’s infection machinery to see what is different from the original configuration of the coronavirus, and what the implications of these changes are. The finding, published in the journal Science on July 1, shows that the Epsilon variant "relies on an indirect and unusual neutralisation-escape strategy. – PTI

India expects to receive foreign-made COVID-19 vaccine doses through the COVAX global vaccine-sharing programme for the first time, with 3-4 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna shots potentially arriving by August, two sources said on Wednesday.
India, the world’s biggest producer of vaccines, was initially the main source of COVID-19 shots for the COVAX programme, but halted its exports in April after a massive wave of COVID-19 infections, having sold or donated 66 million shots.

Sanofi SA and GlaxoSmithKline Plc have received an approval from Indian authorities for a late-stage clinical trial of their protein-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate, the drugmakers said on Thursday.France’s Sanofi and Britain’s GSK in May kicked off global trials to include more than 35,000 adults to test the shot. They hope to get approvals by the end of 2021 after early-stage results showed the vaccine produces a robust immune response.
The Indian arm of the studies will enrol roughly 3,000 adults between the ages of 18 years and 55 years, according to India’s clinical trial registry.The assessment is expected to run for a year and the first enrolment in India is shown to have been made on Tuesday.The Indian drug regulator did not immediately respond to a request for comment. – Reuters
Scientists find new drug target to treat coronavirus, fight future pandemic
Scientists have identified a novel target for a drug that can treat the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, and also help tackle a future coronavirus pandemic.
The researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the US noted that scientists should prepare for a possible next coronavirus pandemic. “God forbid we need this, but we will be ready,” said Karla Satchell, professor of microbiology-immunology at Feinberg School of Medicine.
The team previously mapped the structure of a virus protein called nsp16, which is present in all coronaviruses. The latest study, published in the journal Science Signaling, provides critical information that could aid drug development against future coronaviruses as well as SARS-CoV-2. – PTI
UK regulator shares Covishield data with EU, PM Johnson ‘very confident’ of approvals
The UK’s medicines regulator has shared relevant data with its counterpart in the European Union (EU) to facilitate the clearance of Covishield, the India-made version of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines, Downing Street said on Friday.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said that he is ‘very confident’ of the approvals of the Oxford/AstraZeneca jabs by the EU.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had approved the Serum Institute of India (SII) produced vaccines, but the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is yet to give its nod for the region’s so-called vaccine passports for travel.
It has led to concerns that Indians vaccinated with Covishield and thousands in Britain who received the India imported jabs may face hurdles when travelling to the EU.
“I am very confident that there will not prove to be a problem,” Prime Minister Johnson told reporters at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Downing Street when asked about the issue. (AP)
