Reliance Jio: The champion of Digital India or Analog India?

I must admit that I was euphoric over the Reliance Jio launch today morning. Also, thanks to the media hype, I initially believed that it was a “revolutionary” service for data users like me who are glued to the internet all the time. But as the hours passed, reality began to sink in.
After some quick analysis, I have come to the conclusion that it is not for data users lke me who are constantly browsing the internet, but instead, it is actually for those who are constantly chattering on phone.

Let me take up some of the hyped up highlights & try to explain why it does not convince me to make a switch.

1) First & foremost, it is portrayed as the messiah for data users. All the news channels have been highlighting that the data charges on Reliance Jio is as low as Rs 50/GB. This is actually highly misleading because that low rate of Rs 50/GB would be applicable only when you buy the high end monthly pack of Rs 4,999 per month!! In that pack, you get around 75 GB which roughly translates to Rs 50/GB. But in a normal pack like Rs 499 per month, you get only 4 GB, which translates to around Rs 100/GB. And if you consider the Rs 19 pack which gives 100 MB, it translates to around Rs 190/GB.

2) In the entry level package of Rs 149 per month, although you get unlimited voice calls (which is highly appreciated), you get only 300 MB of data. So, it is definitely not for a data user like me, but for someone who hardly uses internet, and wants unlimited calling.

3) The Rs 19/day pack is marketed as a chota pack which can cater to casual users who want to browse internet on a need basis. But there is nothing revolutionary about it because it offers only 100 MB for Rs 19 & the validity is 1 day. Suppose I am on the Rs 149/month pack and I exhaust my 300 MB within few days and one fine day I want to book an Ola cab or watch a 1 min YouTube video, then I must shell out a minimum of Rs 19. (There is no pack smaller than that). But if I am on Airtel/Idea/Vodafone, I can go for their Rs 9 pack and get 35 MB. i.e Instead of spending Rs 19 on Reliance Jio to book an Ola cab, I can recharge Rs 9 on Airtel & get the work done. Also, it is to be noted that Airtel/Idea offer 100 MB of 4G data for Rs 24 which has a validity of 3 days, which I feel is much better than Jio’s 100 MB of 4G data for Rs 19 which has a validity of 1 day.

4) As explained above, the Rs 149/month pack makes no sense for data users because it gives only 300 MB. The next pack is the Rs 499/month pack which has 4 GB of data (along with the default unlimited calling feature). Since unlimited calling is available in both the Rs 149 pack as well as Rs 499 pack, then the only difference is that the 499 pack gives you additional 3.7 GB of data at an additional cost of Rs 350.
=> Rs 350 for 3.7 GB? Sorry, not convincing. Your own brother Anil Ambani has been offering 10 GB of data for less than Rs 400. Yes, I agree that while they are offering 3G, you are offering 4G, but at the end of the day, the total data remains the same.

5) Let me take up the next pack. Rs 999. I get 10 GB of data (along with the default unlimited calling feature).
Compared to the Rs 149 pack which already has unlimited calling feature, what I get in this pack is effectively 9.7 GB of data for Rs 850.
I am not impressed because if I spend a little extra, I can get unlimited 3G from BSNL. Yes, Unlimited 3G by BSNL for Rs 1099.
Check this:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-ne...

6) Now that I have seen how even the Rs 999 pack fails to impress me, due to much better offering from BSNL. Why should I pay Rs 999 to Reliance for 10 GB data, when BSNL is offering me unlimited data for
Rs 1099?

What is my conclusion finally?
For a data user, Reliance Jio is not impressive. If the usage is more than 1 GB per month, then the Rs 149 pack should not even be considered because it has only 300 MB. In the next pack, Jio offers 4 GB data for Rs 499 which is not revolutionary, but since it says night time is unlimited, I think it can be called “evolutionary”. But still that is not such a great incentive to switch.
In the next plan which costs Rs 999, it offers only 10 GB, whereas BSNL gives me unlimited data for almost the same price.

That’s about my personal requirements. Now let’s look at the overall benefit for the masses.

The only major advantage for the masses is the unlimited voice calling which can be availed for Rs 149 per month. In today’s scenario, most of the mobile users, especially among the working class, are actually prepaid users with free lifetime validity connections, upon which they regularly recharge Rs 20-30 which usually lasts for almost a month for them. For example, I personally know many taxi drivers, vegetable vendors, mechanics etc who hardly make outgoing calls. Even if they make an outgoing call, it would not last for more than a minute. Such people tend to use only Rs 30-50 talktime per month, for which only Rs 50 topup recharge is sufficient. (Such recharges have unlimited validity).
Now, if they must go for Jio just because the free voice calling is tempting, then it means they must shell out Rs 149, which lapses after 28 days (It has 28 days validity), after which they must again recharge Rs 149 and so on. For someone who is used to topup of Rs 20-30 per month (and that too on a need basis), such a mandatory cost of Rs 149/month sounds very expensive. That translates to around 149*12 = Rs 1800 per annum, compared to their existing habit of regular topups which might come up to a total of just 20*12 = Rs 240 per annum which is sufficient for their practical purposes.
That’s a whopping 6 times higher, just for unlimited voice calling, whether you really do unlimited calling or not.

So, as we can see, the only upside is unlimited voice, and not data. Even the unlimited voice for Rs 149 sounds high for the majority who are happy with their Rs 20-30 topup once in every 20-30 days.

Hence, it is difficult to categorize Reliance Jio as a revolutionary data service, but it can be a good voice service if one is into chattering regularly for 1 hour outgoing call every day.

Now that we have realized that the Jio plans are not revolutionary, can we atleast call it evolutionary? Not really. By claiming itself as a path for Digital India & provide internet to the masses, it might actually end up becoming popular only for its unlimited voice, and since voice services are considered “backward”, it is certainly not evolutionary.

This way, Jio, according to my analysis is chalking out the vision of “Analog India” (voice), but not “Digital India” (data).

They made us digital ch***** https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_cry.gif

I agree. It is definately better than what existing operators are offering but its not like some new revolution has happened.

Frankly typical necessary data usage for a guy will be around 1 gb per month for whatsapp / facebook. So for that you have to anyway spend Rs. 250-300. Lets say Rs. 200 for calls as well. So effectively for Rs. 499 you are only getting more voice and more data. Your monthly outgo isnot reducing using Jio unless you cram up ur data needs in 0.3 gb for a month

I too agree, there is nothing revolutionary in this.

Data plans are not attractive to dump a broadband connection and switch to Jio and don’t we need a VoLTE phone to place voice calls and if that is the case why would a taxi drivers, vegetable vendors, mechanics etc purchase a new phone for it.

Telenor offers around 36000 local and national seconds and free Telenor to Telenor in around 115 Rs for 28 days and I am sure other operators must also be having similar plans so why will someone purchase a new phone and pay more if their requirement can be fulfilled in less amount and without need to purchase a new phone.

Regarding unlimited night data, have they defined the time which will be counted as night it could be 12:00 – 6:00 AM it can also be 2:00 – 5:00 AM so the usefulness of unlimited data will only be clear after that.

Currently it a nightmare trying to call someone from Jio SIM so it makes no sense to switch from you current operator if you want reliability in calls.

Matte or shine?

Matte.

I guess you are trying to add up the volume and matte finish. I don’t think wax won’t fit your case.

These are my recommendation.

American Crew Fiber – Perfect for the shorter hair.

SEBASTIAN matte putty or clay – Smells nice, and good hold.

Loreal clay- good enough to give hold and a nice texture.

I don’t know how these products work on your hair; it depends on many factors like the strength of your hair, texture, the hair style.

Better to spend some time with the barber on the nonpeak hour.

How, first of all you have to inform the wifi user that he’ll be billed & even then it’s more than a bit of a mess to implement? There’s no arguing that, I’ve already mentioned it a few times that there might be data/time limit even with free public wifi hotspots but I’ve not experienced that with JIOnet as yet.

Now back to the point which you & some others are pushing for, tell me if I have an Airtel prepaid connection & using JIOnet wifi, say after 31 Dec, how will JIO charge me for using public wifi (let’s also assume that there is no time/data limit & there will be ad hoc charges) through Airtel?

I think you have a misunderstanding on how these Public Wi-fi hotspots work. If JioNet is on trial until they fully launch it may be free but can be restricted to only Jio users. They have plans to setup to 1 million public wi-fi hotspots. At present I guess they only a small coverage that too on trial basis.

For your question on how Jio will charge, I will give you another example. Check for a BSNL Wi-fi hotspot near you http://www.bsnl.co.in/wifi_hotspo...ml . Use your first 15 or 30 mins of free quota and then see what happens next. You will be disconnected and will not be allowed to connect to that Wi-fi without a data pack. http://www.bsnl.co.in/wifi_tarif...ml

To clarify – You will not be charged from your mobile balance but you need to subscribe to a Wi-fi data pack

Yes & no, I do understand that Wifi usage can be restricted heck down to a MAC level. What I fail to understand (still) is how this will be implemented by JIO for their public wifi hotspots, for instance over here we have BRTS bus stands that have JIOnet installed inside them. So in essence JIO is using (basically leasing) govt land to provide free wifi, for now, as you said. If they do end this trial then what would interest me is how they price such wifi data packs, cause I was under the impression that most/all of these public wifi hotspots by JIO will be free, for a few years, or something to that effect as I’d seen on local news channels & papers. I guess I’ll find out in the new year, till then it’s nothing to fret over.

Agreed.

And to answer the question, why media is making all the hype, well todays world is all about creating hype. See today mainstream media is managed very well. Further after corporates have realized the power of social media, they allocate resources for managing that too. So agencies appointed by reliance would be managing both mainstream and social media. Mainstream media will not publish anything adverse as it will implication on their ad business. Social media is managed by Ad agencies in such a manner that negetive content is drowned out. Only after a few days of the launch, actual analysis will start coming out in media

This way, Jio, according to my analysis is chalking out the vision of “Analog India” (voice), but not “Digital India” (data).

agree with some of your points. disagree strongly with 20-30 recharge walas a month.
20-30rs recharges will give you 20 rs talktime and give u 1 min a day approximately and IMO those people will be maximum 1-5% of the total mobile users.

according to me JIO is atleast revolutionary for voice calls.
for 149 per month, the best plan without rate cutter i can think of is 280 mins per month or 10 mins a day. so, jio will be real good for atleast ~80% of the people who call atleast 10 minutes a day

Unfortunately for telcos those people are majority of their prepaid user base but they may generate only 1-5% of their total revenue. Infact its the postpaid user base, which is just 5-10% of the total user base, who generate majority of the income for these telcos.

As for 149 pm plan, this is not cheapest for those who make 10 calls a day. Some operators like BSNL and Aircel provide better plans in the 100-150 price range. Jio is certainly cheaper for those who make more than 600 calls a month but other operators may also consider reducing voice tariff or introduce new voice pack with more free calls & SMS.

What about the need to purchase a new VoLTE enabled handset?
Like I mentioned in my earlier post many operators like Tenor offer lot of talktime in less amount and they SIM can be used on any phone.

This was to be expected, why do people want to endlessly abuse the system? I’d say 4GB in a day is more than enough data, I don’t even use that much on my 25Mbps hathway broadband connection though I do go over 4GB on days when I’m downloading something important https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_wink.gif

Moral of the story ~ if you need more/uninterrupted data go for wired broadband, if you can’t afford it then stop freeloading or if there’s no other (wired) option in your area then it’s just bad luck.

But its truly unfair for LYF customers who paid for the preview offer. For others who got free its fair.

+1

LYF Customers are fooled ?? Reliance can never stop fooling people! Bad Decision by JIO, any how last day to use this Dec 31 this year!

I don’t necessarily mean only those users who make 1 call a day or recharge 20-30 a month. I was referring to low usage customers in general. The low usage subscribers could even include those who make 2-3 calls a day or recharge for Rs.50 or whatever definition telcos may have for low usage. If you consider the number of inactive sims (who use it just to keep the sim active) and the number of low usage customers it could easily be a majority. If as you say 90% of the people recharge on average 150 a month then why are the ARPUs so low? It could easily be above Rs.250 a month.

For BSNL and Aircel plans – BSNL has Rs.135 STV (even cheaper if deducted from balance) with 275 free calls and Rs.149 STV with 19200 sec. Aircel has Rs.94 pack with 250 free calls.

Thanks bro!

I am saying this as I have seen the agreement copy. Right now they are not exercising the option in places where Jionet is operational as they re yet to launch commercially. After Commercial launch, they can easily activate it.
For public wifi also, you need to login with your mobile number+otp. So it is very much possible to directly bill to your number.
Anyone who has used Airport wifi knows that after 30 minutes, it automatically cuts off.

For Jio SIM users, usage will be billed directly or usage will be adjusted against plan. I am sure it will be in the fine prints of the forms that a new user signs to get the SIM.
For other SIM users, beyond the free minutes, usage will be blocked or they will be routed to a page that asks them to pay (similar thing happens in airport wifi from Tata Indicom). Since its SIM+OTP based login, same number (non-Jio) may even be blocked access after it has availed the daily limit for certain number of days in the month. Technologically, it is perfectly possible.
Till now Jionet was free as there was no commercial launch. Now they will apply the brakes.

yeah i was talking about the primary number of the people and you were concentratin on standby sims. the same maid who works at our home has another number for which she tops up only 100 in 3-4 months and she keeps it active so that her son calls her with airtel 10p/m booster, so her ARPU will be 50 per month. i would say 2nd , 3rd sim is the reason for low ARPU and if calls are free everywhere , then there will be no need of 2nd, 3rd, 4th sim etc except for dimers https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif .
check my above comment , i also clearly mentioned about the same bsnl pack and jio pack is far better as bsnl gives u 270 minutes for 135 and jio gives unlimited for 150
