TN orders permanent closure of Sterlite copper plant
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday issued a government order, directing the state Pollution Control Board to seal the Vedanta group’s copper plant and close it down “permanently” following last week’s violent protests during which 13 people were killed in police firing.
The government order said it endorsed the recent closure direction of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and also asked the TNPCB to “seal the unit and close the plant permanently

Closure of the plant has led to a spike in copper prices. The plant has the capacity to produce 4 lakh tonnes of copper per year. It has a share of about 35 per cent in the India’s primary copper market and exports mainly to Gulf and Asian countries. India’s copper consumption has been increasing consistently over the last few years. I hope with similar excuses we will ban all plants , vehicles , industries by doing violent protest supported by political parties . but they will target the one which is largest manufacturer .
I read somewhere it fulfills 40% of copper need of india and create many jobs .
if pollution is the reason then Delhi must be the 1st city where action should be taken . even court said we live in gas chamber , reports say delhi pollution is same as smoking 50 cigarette in a day .
but this plant has been there since long time so why now all of a sudden shut down…
