Hi, I am looking to buy a router for home as the number of connections are increased. Facing some connectivity issues with a 20mbps connection… Gets disconnected very often on laptop. Wifi signal is sufficient in all the rooms and speed too.

Living in 2 BHK
Current no. of connections are 5
Using Tenda N4 150mbps https://www.amazon.in/Tenda-Wireless-Setup-Rout...

Which is the best one to buy considering cost, connectivity, radiation lvl ?
Or
Should I just go with this one?
TENDA AC5 AC1200 1167 Mbps Router (Black, Dual Band) @ 1499

This and tenda one op mentioned both have fast ethernet ports only. So only 95mbps max. Ac is gimmick in these router.
Better get tplink c6 or a6 from amazon or anywhere.
Cheapest non chinese gigabit ac router.

If any of your devices dual band, 5ghz , then go for dual band. Dual band gigabit has become the new norm.
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07GV...7/

But before buying new router, if your laptop has RJ45 jack(LAN), then get a lan cable for stable connection with your laptop. it definitely works and you may try skipping the router upgrade for now.
We are anyways getting WiFi 6 routers and you can directly upgrade to it in a year or so once they become affordable.

Edit: Your Pick seems to be okay, with no complaints

Looks like software problem in either the laptop (driver) or router (outdated firmware).

Make sure the “Transmit Power” is set to HIGH. Increase the “lease time”. Use 20MHz “channel BW” or if not working then choose “auto”.

IMO Any router is suffice as long as it matches your speed requirements and has atleast dual Antenna. For future proof, you can consider dual Band : 2.4/5 GHz

Laptop is new and I receive regular updates. Though I’m having a similar issue when I connect bluetooth devices, it often reconnects.

// Facing some connectivity issues with a 20mbps connection… Gets disconnected very often on laptop. //

The issue could be related to 2.4 GHz band. Can u try switching OFF Bluetooth (as BT also uses 2.4GHz band for transmission) on your laptop and see if WIFI stops getting disconnected randomly?

Also.. i think a single band (2.4GHz) router should be fine if you live in a less crowded place with a limited speed internet (Say 20/30Mbps line) but if you like in an apartment like me then Dual band router is must
I do have a 100Mbps line ..with Ethernet i get the maximum (95-100Mbps) and with 5Ghz band (Same 90-100Mbps) but with the 2.4Ghz band (I get only 30-40Mbps)..there is a lot of congestion involved especially when i using the 2.4Ghz Band (The better range turns up as a con here*)
Not sure if your router supports this..but if it does, always make sure you are using the non-overlapping channels if its 2.4Ghz (1/6/11?)

but i would suggest this one over that

Also if you’re fine with renewed, i have seen much better deals on them (50% OFF on usual selling price)

@Nigel first decide your budget & then only decide model. A router is nothing but a micro pc with processor & ram doing network tasks & just like any pc its performance will depend on processor & ram.e.g.cheap routers have dual core core processors while better routers have quad core processors which can better handle network load which in turn depends on rate of data transfer/speed among devices on wifi network. Similarly cheap routers have 64mb ram while better routers have 128mb ram which is better to handle more devices. Archer C6 has dual core processor & 128mb ram which is kind of minimum standard nowadays people should aim for. Personally I suggest spending ~5k if it is within your budget & get either archer c7 which has good reviews over the years(even if it has dual core processor) or asus ac59u which has a quad core processor.

P.S. btw that Tenda AC5 has 64mb ram.

64mb is quite good for a 1200AC router, I am not sure whether you are aware or not, in router’s performance more depend on implementation since most of the packets doesn’t even go through kernel.

Just to give an idea, when I was in MediaTak, their home gateway’s standard platform used to have 128 Mb which was a 2300AC solution(triband 11ac).

I am using TP link dual band wifi router. I actually love their service. Earlier i had some issues with my router and i went to their service center they checked my router and told me because of some xyz reasons this isn’t working and then gave me a new sealed pack router and i was like sunglasses
Since then i am using it wink
PS – I am using tenda’s wifi adapter on my pc and it works like a charm from several years.

No, you will need something like this.
https://www.amazon.in/TP-Link-WLAN-Rout-300mb-M...

Above will not work with adsl broadband like airtel/bsnl which need telephone line connection.

Thank u all for your inputs… many went over my head smile
But it will surely help a lot of people… So Karma added!
I bought the one mentioned in the first post as it will be sufficient for upto 100 mbps atleast. And home use so don’t feel the need of spending more than 1.5-2k on a router.

I recently got TP-Link Archer MR600 from Amazon at 8.5K net of Citibank discount. It has 2 band LTE Carrier Aggregation (provided you put it physically at a location where it can pick up both band signals), full Gigabit ports and supports Onemesh. Got it hooked to Airtel broadband (through LAN cable) with Jio SIM as auto fallback backup. Working much better than the Airtel given wifi and even Jio speeds are great (switches between 3+40 and 5+40 CA)

Now that is what I call a good purchase if money is no issue. smile

Hello all!

I was using a BSNL Broadband connection since ages. It’s hooked onto a TD-W8901N 150 mbps router. The current speeds I get is usually 3-4mbps.

I have recently taken local broadband connection and I’ve got the ONU Modem and it’s giving 85-90mbps speed currently via LAN port. I’m very confused regarding what router should I buy for Wifi

You can imagine that as I suddenly switched between 2 internet connections with such a gap between speeds that it’s really difficult for me to select what to choose.

I’m unable to understand if :-

1. I should go with dual band or single band at these speeds.
2. Go with AC750 or AC1200
3. Go with a Gigabit router or not.

The copy of the router @Nigel bought from iBall is costing me @ 1.4k approx whereas a TP-Link A6 or C6 Gigabit router is costing me 2.4k approximately.

In prime days I’ll get 200-300 more discount on these

It’d be great if you can help me in deciding ☺️

My budget is max 2.5k, need connectivity on 2floors and yes half of my devices support 5ghz and I may upgrade to higher speeds in future

How big is the house and how many and what kind of devices will connect?

Shopping Friend Shopping Friend

With the existing N150 router with one antenna I’m getting sufficient range.

I don’t use all the devices at the same time so at the same time probably one laptop and 3 phones will be connected to it.

currently using archer c6 since last 2days after seeing so many ppl suggesting it.
first bootup time is tooo much, say it like 2-3minute.
second range is not so impressive compared to my old router https://www.amazon.in/iBall-iB-WRD12EN-Smart-Wi... which i bought for 800rs

Critic Critic
Link Copied

Yes there are some comments suggesting bootup is slow but I am hoping it will be fixed in future firmware update. Range depends on many factor & 5GHz range will always be much less than 2.4GHz range(principles of physics). If you are talking about 2.4GHz range of C6 & iball & assuming they are placed in same position & you compared the range with same devices just recently then it is a bit strange.

Yes router is placed in exact same position of wall.

I got the Archer A6 however I’m not satisfied with it. Range is okayish even on 2.4ghz (negligibly better than my 8 years old N150 router with 1 antenna).

The most important problem is that the 2.4 GHz band isn’t that stable (the router speeds fluctuate a lot however no problem while directly using LAN).

And lastly the WiFi hangs sometimes. Have to disconnect and reconnect the devices.

Very disappointed indeed!

Trying to return it

Deal Subedar Deal Subedar

Noticed the same hanging issue in my new Archer C6 as well. The router hangs heavily when a download is in progress. And internet stops working across all wifi connected devices.

Connected this C6 to Nokia ONT wifi router (Bridge mode?), which in comparison is very very solid with multiple connections.
