Demystifying a Dishwasher

our maid went for a 15 days leave for her br-in-law wedding found very difficult to find another temp maid and frustrated bought a 32K dishwasher to put an end to the worry permanently.

Well its just the start of the worry actually…

D-mart nor Easyday in my area stock any dishwasher products. So ended up buying Fortune tablets from ebay with a 7% off coupon.

The samsung machine came with only 2 tablets of FINISH a top brand in DW consumables but no rinse aid not salt.

DW needs a 5-in-Tablet or detergent + rinse aid while for both needs salt which is another 100 bucks per kg.

The 3 consumables together will shoot the expenses to about 1000 bucks per month compared to 500 bucks to maid.

After running through numerous blogs found

  • Vinegar works as a good rinse aid dropping cost from Rs. 165/500ml to just Rs. 50/500ml
  • Instead of finish salt Rs. 100.kg crystal salt without iodine is Rs. 125/25kg. Found a chemical merchant selling industrial salt at NanaPeth Pune will be going to his place to collect the pack.

As said earlier ordered Fortune power tablets from ebay 60 tabs for Rs.615 so this will take though 1 month ( will have to use the DW twice a day)

DW owner please pitch in and share your experience. I need to learn things myself before teaching my wife how to use it. No one in my society has a DW so is a steep learning curve.

2 very interesting websites along with photos as how to load Indian utensils in a DW. Need to find cheaper DW detergent. plz help

..I bet you won’t use it for more than a month or may be two…such things are tempting but the hassles and costs involved in using them outweigh the convenience they bring..

no need to go to nana peth..raw salt is avl in all kirana shops

Analyst Analyst

sea salt at kirana stores has a lot of impurities so not worth the risk when industrial grade salt is easily available and also cheaper for 5 bucks per kilo.

Its not a matter of losing interest. When I crack the code can use it economically daily 2 times. There are a lot of people using it well over 4 years without worry and actually for just 200 bucks per month.

Its like an eye opener when a detergent company started an advertisement stating handwashing detergent powder is different from a washing machine detergent. There are a lot of people still mixing ariel and tide to keep them WM running cost low and quite many some still using hand washing detergent powder in WM in ignorance since Ariel is way too expensive.

Actually getting rid of the maid is worth the effort.

Just bought high quality fine crystal salt without iodine for just 5.6 per Kg from Nana peth. Had to buy a 50kg pack for 270 bucks so about 10-12 months of stock. since only the lower grade salt found in kirana stores was in 1Kg packing with the wholeseller.

Had to avoid all major signals where traffic police are normally visible to reach home with the gunny bag or would had to shell out 100 bucks to them.

After about 8 days finally got the DW started and it was a struggle and won it.

1) the kitchen balcony was ment only for washing machine. So plumbing and extra electrical point was required to be created.

2) It was an open balcony so had to get sliding windows installed and the balcony door removed (without which WM was not accessible any more.

3) Had to get all the over sized dinner plates and utensils kept in the cupboard and get the smaller dishes, plates & cooking utensils out (which was the most difficult part)

4) Sourcing of chemicals. This was the biggest challenge. Dmart, EasyDay Pune even Starbazar Andheri Mumbai didn’t stock any DW consumable products.

So called up the manufacturer and got local stockist number Chandan Mini Market,Camp Pune and bought from him.
Prismet 1Kg detergent : Rs. 210/kg (requires a very tea spoon full only)
Prismet 500ml rinse-aid : Rs. 158 (will test if its the same as regular glass cleaner liquid (since its of same consistency and similar composition and relabeling it fetches 3 times more margin) will also test synthetic vineger Rs. 40 for 700ml.
DW non iodised crystal salt : Rs. 5.6/kg bought directly from salt merchant (Fortune sells salt for 75/kg while finish is 200/kg)

Also got spare DW tablets from ebay(60 of them for Rs. 600) If wife runs out of stock while I am traveling.

5) Croma didn’t have Heavy duty stand. Samsung technician tried to swindle me for Rs. 2500, So got it from my trusted Andheri spares dealer on Wednesday for Rs. 1350 (16 wheeler)

Now that things are sorted will be saying goodbye to hand washing utensils. Oh yes the society gossips for my wife will continue to feed in because the maid will continue with other chores in the house. 18 years back it was clothes now a machine additionally replacing for utensil washing too.

Hope my experience helps people in getting their DW started faster.

That’s all fine. Tell me the amount of water it utilizes compared to manual dish-washing. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_rolleyes.gif

it all started with 10 days of homemaid absence & u end up spending ur time & money much more than actually required if u would have somehow adjusted to washing urself..

typical Escalation of commitment…on hindsight u think u made right decision??

More probably yes because- Its human behavoiour JUStification of effort- if one works hard to achieve a goal & find destination to be boring he will realign his attitude & belief in line with destination/goal being interesting…

But yes do appreciate details u have put in – Will help many to make Informed choice ..

It uses spray jets and reuses the heated water so water foot print is minimal. Water heats only once and not a continous flow like a washing machine.

The manual states 291 kWh/year and water as 3360 Litres /year. A+ EU energy efficiency rating.

Maid spills over 4 bucks of water each day in running tap X 15 Ltr bucket = 21900 litres /yr so compare it with 3360 litres /yr and you have your rough answer.

Many of you are new to washing machines. My family has been using it for some 18-25 years. In those old days the fabric available was not suited for washing machines. threads coming out, colour draining, fast fading, fabric turning weaks in just few washes was a common problem. But for past decade or more fabric has improved and so is the detergent quality. So we take things for granted.

Same thing with dishwashers. I had to spend the time (rather delay) since I didn’t have to dedicated specific time from my schedule. Problem was information available was sketchy and mainly written by USA based people and not from uses from my city.

@ dharmanath481

Hi, I didn’t mean to say dishwasher is the only medium by which we waste water. I was just curious to know how much water it utilizes when compared to doing this manually. That’s all. Of course, my question was based on water usage in washing machines and as you say, we have taken it for granted. Right you are. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Same will happen with a lot of people like me across India to curb their own footprint to save as natural resources get strained and expensive.

An automatic 4-star WM can save 3-4 times water than hand washing for a 4 member family and an automatic DW its over 70% of water saved.

Usually my wife’s favorite maid just calls up early morning to give an excuse of not coming to work.

My wife goes hyper finding someone to get the over night utensils washed or I pay the price of taking the family for dinner (800 – 1000 bucks damage thanks to the maid)

I was pleasantly surprised to get a call at 10:30am today at office not of complaint but as “The DW has switched off automatically can I now open the door to take out utensils ?”

I let out a sigh of relief and my investment in the DW turned fruitful. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Its 2 month using the dishwasher so thought of leaving a final review.

Impact on electricity bill : NIL

  • The units consumption of electricity per month has averaged out and not changed even after daily and sometimes twice a day.

consumables in past 2 months

  • DW salt 1 kg : Rs. 12
  • DW detergent 1/2kg approx : Rs. 100
  • DW rinse agent 100ml : rs. 27

Total : Rs. 70 per month X 12 = Rs. 840
Maid : Rs 500 per month X 12 + diwali bonus = Rs. 6500

check the thread above in my old posts. I did a price match with their portal and got a discount which I used to purchase extended warranty.

Any one buying any gadget above 15000 bucks has to take extended warranty to safe guard from repair liabilities.
