Hi,
I have seen many people purchase data cards from ecom sites. From what I know, data cards basically allow you to use internet on your PC/Laptop by just inserting NORMAL sim card in it and then use it by attaching it to PC/Laptop.
Is it the only benefit? Please correct me if I am wrong. Also, please tell me answers to my following queries:
1) Can we insert any network/type SIM card in the data card? Or we need to do some activation/buy a special SIM card?
2) If we insert any SIM with a certain 3G plan activated in it, will it work?
3) Is it plug and play? Or do we need to install download some softwares and/or set up internet connections manually everytime?
4) What are some other benefits/uses of data cards?
5) Some products also mention Call/SMS support etc. What is it exactly?
Also suggest me some good data cards which you are personally using.
TIA

DS: See the answer to your last question.
1) Can we insert any network/type SIM card in the data card? Or we need to do some activation/buy a special SIM card?
DS: Yes, you can use SIM cards from any operator as long as the 3G/4G modem is unlocked.
2) If we insert any SIM with a certain 3G plan activated in it, will it work?
DS: Yes, any 3G plan will work. A 3G/4G modem behaves exactly like a phone in that way.
3) Is it plug and play? Or do we need to install download some softwares and/or set up internet connections manually everytime?
DS: Yes, it’s plug and play. The first time you plug-in the 3G/4G modem to your computer, it will prompt you to install the necessary drivers and software which come preloaded in the modem itself.
4) What are some other benefits/uses of data cards?
DS: See the next answer.
5) Some products also mention Call/SMS support etc. What is it exactly?
DS: Yes, most modems support calling, SMS, and USSD facilities just like a mobile phone via the application which comes preloaded in the modem.
Also suggest me some good data cards which you are personally using.
TIA

As for product suggestions and other useful info, see my posts in the following threads:

Also, now that 4G will soon be available nationwide, so you might want to purchase a 4G Huawei modem instead of the 3G modems I suggested a year ago.

Wait for 4G to launch officially. Service providers would provide with cheap dongles or mifi devices with bundled data.

Guys, need some help!
I found some really low priced data cards. Some of them are priced as low as 300.
Link: http://www.ebay.in/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=...
Few queries:
1) Are these safe to use or there will be any issues? I don’t have much idea so thought of asking you guys.
2) Will those work with normal SIM cards? Suppose I use my normal mobile SIM card with 3G pack activated in it. Will it work if I put it in data card and attach data card on my laptop?
Pls help me out. @DealSeeker @hese @thrifty_indian @hackerboys

bro dont buy them ,, they are useless thats why they reduced price …
actually cdma is going to shut down soon … reliance and bsnl has already shut down in many places , in mts u cant buy cdma sim , it will also shut down soon ,
remaining is tata indicom cdma aka docomo cdma which is similar to tata docomo 3g , so its better to use 3g net …
in my suggestion it will be waste of money to buy these dongles ..
u can go for a 4g dongle and use 3g /4g sim ….
@dealbhai wrote:my relative use to buy new Sim card every month for this as reliance had a cheap plan for new users so new simcard will enable u this plus many sign up offers on various platforms like taxis, helpchat, online recharges etc@hackerboys wrote:

This is the lowest I found that works for 3G sim anything lower is CDMA based which will be obsolete in a few months. http://www.ebay.in/itm/RELIANCE-MF190-High-Spee...
You will be able to use it with any sim but it has maximum speed of 7.2 Mbps only
Searching for a 3G gsm datacard/dongle to use it with wifi router (Tenda D303)
https://m.ebay.in/itm/111956...22
Is this a good one ? Or any other suggestion?
Can pay 600
CC: @DealSeeker @thrifty_indian
@Tejaa Don’t buy a 3G dongle, get a 4G LTE one so you could use it with Jio once it becomes available. As for specific models, you know my policy about not suggesting specific models.
