RBI Announced Auto Replenishment for FASTags, NCMC, and UPI Lite

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a significant update to make the process of recharging FASTags, National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC), and UPI Lite wallets more convenient for users. This new feature, called auto-replenishment, is part of the e-mandate system. Its goal is to make sure that when your balance gets too low, it will automatically be topped up to a level that you choose.

With the introduction of auto-replenishment, customers will no longer need to manually recharge their FASTags, NCMC, or UPI Lite wallets. This feature allows balances to be automatically topped up, ensuring that users do not face declined transactions due to low balances. This is particularly beneficial for those who frequently use these services, as it reduces the hassle of constant manual recharging. Auto-replenishment will help make transactions smoother and faster, especially for UPI Lite, which is meant for small, in-person purchases. By automatically adding money to an account, the system can process more transactions without slowing down the bank's main computer systems, making things easier for everyone.

The new auto-replenishment feature is set to significantly enhance the functionality of UPI Lite. Currently, UPI Lite is used for small transactions, with a limit of Rs 2000 in the wallet and payments up to Rs 500 without the need for second-factor authentication. By allowing automatic replenishment, users can ensure their wallets are always funded, facilitating smoother and faster transactions.

This change is expected to reduce the downtime associated with UPI transactions, which often occur at the bank's end. By decreasing the number of manual recharges, the system becomes more efficient, helping the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) move closer to its goal of 100 crore UPI transactions daily.

Similar benefits will extend to FASTags and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), commonly used for paying tolls and using public transportation. Right now, users have to remember to add money to these cards themselves, which can be inconvenient if they run out of money unexpectedly. This will make it easier to use the cards and reduce the chance of having problems when trying to pay for tolls or transportation, making travel easier for everyone.
