I was getting emails from RBL / BajajFinServ that they have issued me a Credit Card while I never applied for the same. I got PIN as well in password protected .pdf file. I entered my date of birth as the password and I was able to open the file and see PIN. I immediately reported to RBL a few times but never recd. any replies for several days. Finally I wrote a very rude mail and they replied back that they will talk to me. I gave them my number. Never recd. any calls. Finally received a reply that they talked to me ( they gave a different phone number which doesn’t belong to me).

I told them that the phone number that they have mentioned doesn’t belongs to me and my phone number is different. Now that fraudster has done about 15k transactions and I am continusoly receive emails from RBL to pay the outstanding payments.

RBL is not taking much interests and say they will look into this etc. Today, I downloaded the CIBIL report and I can see the card details there. I can see the phone number that RBL people mentioned and the postal address as well. Postal address also doesn’t belongs to me as you might have guessed already.

This is clearly a fraud case, where this fraud person has used my details to get the card issued and shopping. I searched that number and found that person on Facebook.

What actions should I take? What are the things I should take care of?

File a complaint to RBL plus FIR.

First of all block the card. If you can’t do this online then visit the branch. Report a case of fraud to them as well as local police.

My thoughts

  • File an FIR for impersonating first since you already have the phone number, address, may be name from truecaller or facebook
  • Shame the respective bankon twitter, basically tweet your issue hiding sensitive details?

I wonder why the fraudster gave your email ID while all other details for communication are his/her. Something is amiss here.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

Donno why my official ID was given but thankfully due to this I know all these things. As per his profile ID on Facebook, his name is also same as mine. On truecaller, same name in short is being displayed with his photo as shown on the Facebook.

Very interested to know how can this happen?
Video KYC/Physical verification all are required unless it is on existing relationship

I am also not sure how this was done sad

Looks like.. an act of a " Desperate CC agent " to fulfill his monthly quota
Now, he will claim that.. some confusion w.r.t PAN lead to CC approval

// This fraud person has used my details to get the card issued and shopping. I searched that number and found that person on Facebook. //
^ This person could be innocent, so try to deal with banks first. If you’re going to make formal complaint, target the bank first
( How could they even approve the CC without ID/Address verification w/ you having no relationship with the bank or lender ? )

Thanks for your reply @getready . I also thought similar things first.

He did shopping using this credit card. If he was so innocent he MUST not do shopping instead he should have reported this incident to bank… if not personally, he MUST have cleared this to bank when he got call from them.

This seems like some goof up by the bank rather than a fraudster to me OR the fraudster is very stupid to have given your email id and used his primary no (assuming it’s primary as he has a FB account linked to the no) to do a fraud

Do not target the individual publicly, please. First do everything necessary with the bank, putting all blame on the bank since they are the card issuers. Do not even give the details of this the guy to the police, they will make life hell for that guy, and he might not even be at fault at all. Act sensibly. This is TOTALLY the bank’s fault.

Also, do not worry about CIBIL, RBL will have to take corrective measures to restore everything in your CIBIL to as it was and settle the matter. This is totally on RBL. And thank you for putting this up, never ever going for RBL relationship no matter how enchanting it might seem.

They are taking cases of fraud lightly.

Nope. I don’t have any intentions to target him publicly as of now… and yes, I do understand that how Police can make his life hell ( if they take any actions ). I have his number / address etc. but I have never contacted him so far.

All that I have done so far is … contacting RBL only. I have all the records with him alongwith their replies. and Yes, RBL is shit, I have blocked 100s of number of RBL as keep on receiving spam marketing calls everyday.

Thanks regarding CIBIL comments, Nope I am not worried much about this smile

RbL is shit, they used to call me every day for card, they had all my details without me sharing anything including PAN and address. I took the card just to stop these calls and also to stop them from issuing cards to someone else in my name like they did to OP.

Sometimes it’s okay to choose violence wink

But wait, it didn’t stop there, they sent a wrong card, placed a downgrade request, delivered after 6 months, after 4-5 failed card re-generation requests. Now in CIBIL, it’s showing 2 cards due to the downgrade. 🤦‍♂️

But at the end of the day, it’s okay, ab sher pala hai toh thora bahut adjustment toh karna padega pensive

I also got many spam calls from RBL bank for a “100% guaranteed pre-approved card” but they always insisted on doing aadhaar biometrics which as a principle I have never done for any of my credit card & won’t do in future too so my physical verification was tagged as failed & later I used that excuse permanently(aka my aadhaar card physical copy lost & linked mobile no. currently disabled) which worked perfectly.

Now in this case I don’t know how they issued the card without doing physical verification via aadhaar biometric so definitely it is the fault of bank/cc agent. This is why I suggest people to avoid taking cards from RBL because such irresponsible behaviour from a financial institution is unacceptable.

This credit card may have been issued on the basis of physical documents submitted by the agent to the bank (collected sometime earlier for another credit card application or other banking relationship). The agent may have certified having verified the copies with original documents.

He may have deliberately used address proof, phone number of the fraudster and PAN card, email address of the victim in the credit card application with an intention to transfer CIBIL liability on the victim.

Since the verification call for issuing credit card must have come to the fraudster, he would have confirmed the details.

Never heard of PIN number coming password protected pdf file, which sounds ridiculous. Either PIN comes by post or has to be generated electronically using mobile number authentication. How did the fraudster get the PIN number of the credit card, if it was delivered by email?

Now in the present situation, victim can contest that since the registered address and mobile number do not belong to him, he is not the owner of the card and the bank needs to send recovery agents to the physical address of the fraudster. Victim’s Pan card has been used to issue a credit card to someone else having same name.

It may not be possible to block the credit card now as you have to call from the registered mobile number, which belongs to the fraudster. Victim can also request the bank for a physical or scanned copy of his credit card application in order to file an FIR with the police.

RBL shares pin on email in a secured document.

One can always set/change pin on IVRS before or after the pin on email arrives. And whatever the pin set via IVRS will take priority.

Similar incident happened with my friend. He was victim of fraud in name of granting loan. He meet a man who claim himself a bank agent/broker who can get him loan 1 Lakh from bank without too much much paper works. He asked KYC docs through WhatsApp. When my asked reason he said he will have check CIBIL score first. He checked his cibil score on OneScore & applied OneScore credit card which got approved instantly bcz of 780 cibil score. The blunder mistake of my friend is that he sent the AADHHAR & the other OTP to fraudster without even reading the whole message. After 1 month he shocked to see that 20K outstanding bill due sent to his number. He got troubled as he was looking for loan for personal use. I told him not pay the outstanding bill as it was misuse of documents even bank force you to pay or send money collector agents for debt recovery.
He went police station for report about fraud but as usual police ne bola ye tumhari galti hai OTP q dea. Denied to take FIR.
