Phone apps like Google Authenticator , Authy etc
Last time, I used one of them was many years ago and found it not too easy to understand.
Planning to start using them again, since after hearing too many stories of everything and everyone getting hacked.
So someone currently using this app, can you please help me understand if,
a) I lost the phone on which this authenticator app is installed for generating those codes, is it the end of everything?
b) Suppose I don’t have access to a mobile device, can I generate these codes through a web browser?

I have been using Authy for a few months now. Pretty satisfied with it. Google Authenticator did not support backing up the configured apps. So if you switched phones, all the settings will be lost. Authy supports backing up the data. So it’s better.
I prefer the good old sms otp method & most importantly one time backup codes(must do it for all google related services) if you don’t want to end up in a situation like below.

Usin google Auth
Bro, Just Use Google Authenticator
The Reasons are very simple because it is easy, simple, bug free and has a good features that other apps.
You Can set 2FA to all your accounts like Social Account and other important account,
Here’s the good news that I am going to tell you.
1.Just write down the backup code of account it is used in case if you forgot you handset or lost device or formatted accidentaly in those situation by those backup codes you can recover the account.
2. Do not use SMS as backup option because SMS Is not safe your mobile can be hacked
3. It is the most important part, Now when you setup 2FA to all your account in Google Authenticator you will get the option of Export all account and in that you will get " QR CODE" Now,do one thing Screenshot it and Put it in your PC/Laptop or Save it on a secured locker storage like Cloud but dont upload it on Google Drive,One Drive and Indian Drive.
Because,if people will get that bar code and they know that this is the QR Code of all your 2FA account you will be in loss, again one thing Even if you lost your device no worry because install google authenticator and click import account and then scan QR Code from your stored place like PC/Laptop,your accounts will get back.
From where to get backup code and export option. Not showing in my google authenticator android app.
I was looking for an app which have web also so it seems microsoft authenticator is better
I’m using authenticator app for most of the things including exchange related txns.
Using Authy since it’s launched. Never face any issue.
I am using authenticator app for games
Using Microsoft Authenticator app. Microsoft apps are slick for example Sms organizer/Swiftkey keyboard etc
I think i should move from google to Microsoft or Authy as i need
1. Backup in case of mobile lost/new device
2. Some time i don’t have mobile with me so need web view.
Which app is serving above 2 requirements??
Simple yet effective tool Microsoft Authenticator
I decided to use 2FA on all my accounts years back and tried Google Auth, Microsoft Auth, Lastpass Auth, Duo Mobile, Twilio Authy etc.
And Finally sticked with Authy because of multi device support and backup & compatibility with almost all apps and sites (except a few like Adguard etc).
And for some sites there is an option to use multiple 2FA apps simultaneously. Make use of that, And also save individual app and site backup codes separately, just to be safe.
As far as I know, Authenticator apps are one of the option for 2FA. Most common and basic is regular old SMS. Then you can add others like this, Tap yes to login, backup codes etc.
So
1) Nope, you can fall back to SMS.
2) No codes in browser. SMS would be the way to go.
