If you really love your country, doing some community/social work to better the situation for our fellow countrymen would be the way to cultivate or show it. If you feel changing your display picture on a shopping forum for a few days or a few weeks is making any difference, feel free to do so. I am not stopping or discouraging anybody from doing so, I am just echoing the POV of @mahidada. To each his own, bro.

Recently, I was reading an article about Pakistan raising concern and issues to UN about Indian trying to build the highest Flagpost inside Indian territory border . They don’t want to see our national flag even from distance. And, as such Indian officials are looking for alternate space.

But, every now and then, some sections of Indian society waves a Green or Black flag to our faces and we are tolerant to that as well. Nobody objects, I don’t know why.

Point is if one keeps doing such things from time to time, it does sets in our minds. For Eg : Consider movie Basic Instinct. If you have seen that sudden flash, you will tend to remember that, and forget most about the movie. Our mind is like that only. What Pakistan is doing is more of a Psychological war than military. It funds and organizes for these flash flag hoisting. And it is continuously occuring in all parts of country every month without fail. They know intellectual liberals would not bother and chuck these incidents owing to others lack of education. At the same time, these flashes are able to even dampen the spirits of hardcore Patriot, who will feel he is surrounded by such infiltrants and feel insecure. So, flag hoisting or liking our own flag speaks and communicate the message that you are not alone and we are Indians. Symbols are made for easy communication. Our national flag is a symbol. It speaks of assurance. That we are as much Indian as you are. So, changing display pic is like boosting the confidence of others as well.

People will know that in crucial times he can rely upon you or me. Every country understand the importance of Flag hoisting even if it has a small population. In our busy life, we might not be able to hoist flag but changing our display picture can actually spread the feeling and assurance wave.

Patriotism is not built in a day, fear instills in a second. This is not my jingoism speaking but I know for sure we may regret it someday during crisis time when everyone will run amok helter-skelter in search of like-minded patriots for help. Intellectuals will be there but no-one will come to them for they were too liberal to take sides.

@Plato Lack of time is forcing me to keep this discussion short. But here are the main things I want to address:

(1) As I already mentioned in my previous post, “to each his own”.

(2) As for the green/black flag point, all I want to say is that it does not make sense to resort to the level of your “enemy”. Moreover, having fought many “battles” on issues that irked me personally in my life, I have learned the hard way that you can either win the “war” or waste your time and energy on “battles” that do not amount to much in the real scheme of things — you choose.

Read point # 2 again for an answer which might make sense to you if you read it in this context.

Exactly! Kids we all are! Innocent people are being harmed in Kashmir and we think we are helping our fellow countrymen by changing our DP!

Well, It doesn’t hurt to change our DP and show pride in being an Indian citizen. But using words like “Lets see how many actually love the country” hurts-more-than-helps by alienating the silent patriots among us. Not every one of us likes to change DPs, pin flags to our chest, wake up early to attend flag hoistings and watch parades. On the contrary, we are more proud that we live in a free country that doesn’t force us to do all the above.

There’s so much more we can do than just sing anthems before movie screenings and say Bharat Mata ki Jai at some narrow-minded nationalists’ behest. Don’t get me wrong…all the above methods work wonders esp when the country is at war with a foreign country. But we, as the citizenry, have so much to do to right our homeland at this moment. Speak against brain drain when you get the opportunity…refuse the next time some corrupt public servant asks for a bribe…speak against and end the caste system that’s being handed over generations as a heirloom…stop putting foreigners and “white” skin on a pedestal and start treating people for who they actually are. India has an abysmal tax-GDP ratio compared to other countries…paying your taxes is more helpful to the country than patriotic sloganeering.

Changing your DPs and resorting to jingoism is still better than nothing, but lets not forget that we are responsible Indian citizens for the other 363 days as well.
