I have following HP laptop bought in 2017 but not much used and using it for browsing and documents editing only

This is running extremely slow. Even explorer running slow with no other app open. Upgraded to windows 11 and still same issue.

Already tried all options available on internet to make it fast but nothing helped. Also reset it yesterday but still no improvement.

Should i go for RAM increase or change the laptop all together?

Get an SSD installed. It will give your laptop a new life.

How much it will cost? And RAM? Currently it’s 4 gb

SSD is an absolute must for housing the OS and apps. If running memory hungry apps like web browsers and esp. in Windows 10, 8GB is the bare minimum.
Edit: The old Bulldozer derived AMD APUs are a bit slow nowadays.

New seems costly. A good one should be around 50k

You have a slow processor and less ram too, if you just have very light use, upgrade the ram and hard disk to an SSD of low storage capacity 128GB/256GB (both together may be costing you around 7-8 thousand), if you are looking for very resource intensive usage, buy a new one. Otherwise remove windows and install Ubuntu OS. it may work better.

After upgrade can i use current HDD as a external device or it will be total waste?

RAM should be upgraded to 4+4 or 4+8 as current is 4Gb. Or current one will be wasted completely?

Both will depend on the number of slots built in your motherboard.

Upgrade to SSD first, i bet it’ll solve the sluggish problem.
You should also have a view on Task Manager and see memory graphs, Disk usage charts.

If you don’t want to spend a single buck, install Zorin OS smile

Frist observe in Task Manager that what is Disk usage. with Windows 10 without SSD it must be 100% most of the time and CPU usage < 50%.
If it is so, SSD will surely help you.

Yes 100% mostly. With only task manager open and no other active app

@AtulAggarwal can you check CPU clock speed in Task manager and post a screenshot.
Also install CPU-Z and again take a screenshot while bench pressing the CPU.
If it’s what I am thinking; you may not have to install any new HW.

What is bench processing the CPU means?

if you don’t want to spend a penny, try Linux like Ubuntu, Mint etc which ever you like after trying. The greatest advantage of Linux is they are not resource hungry, your computer will run fast and also there is least fear of any virus attack.
There are lot of YouTube videos which will help you to install.

One can try linux with dual boot first, i.e. keeping windows and Linux both at the same time and choose at each startup.
I dont know the exact procedure but i have seen one of my friends doing it.

For that , you can partition you hdd/add and install Linux [(prefer ubuntu for first time users ,deepin(Chinese ) is also good alternative.] in other partition(drive ) than your windows drive.. it will automatically make your system dual boot..

But if you are installing Linux for the first time be very cautious ,you may end up wiping all data (using whole disk ).

And also for dual boot to be successful , drive (hdd /sdd ) should be same…

I have a similar one.. A8 proc but with 8GB from Lenovo.. G50-40 or some similar model number..

It was horrible when it was with HDD. But after replacing it with an SDD, the laptop got a second lease of life. It is working perfectly fine with both windows 10 and Ubuntu. It indeed is a bit slow when it comes to any compute intense tasks, but adequate for normal work, including web application development (php, MySQL, wampserver etc – just highlight the load) along with multiple chrome tabs, VS code etc.
