The real truth of #BoycottChineseProducts

There are very interesting threads on Desidime !

Sonam Wangchuk is successful in getting the Indians to think.

Many of the dimers have also tried to make sense of what is going on and what is the reality.

But what are we up to ? – Is the main question. What do we want to accomplish with #BoycottChinaProducts ?

The first call given by our PM was of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Whatsapp was full of messages telling us what is Chinese Vs. what is Indian. The meaning of “Atmanirabharta” was twisted in those messages.

Desidime is having multiple threads on Chinese phones. Some asking for suggestions of Indian alternatives and some cursing OnePlus 8 Pro’s successful flash sale.

I think without getting into any kind of paranoia of any sort it is important for us to acknowledge that what we all are trying is to serve a nationalistic cause. So it is important for us to understand what we are doing.

Xioami, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus are all manufactured in India. Dont believe me ? Please google them. In fact Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus all are just different brands of a single parent – BBK Electronics, China. Lenevo laptops too get manufactured in India. Samsung, a S Korean company, also has a manufacturing facility in India. Except Samsung all are brands of China and invested heavily in India. They provide thousands of jobs to Indians working in their factories. That means thousands of Indian household earn their livelihood by working with these companies. Then there are Lakhs of people dependent on these thousands of households. There are distribution chains dependent on them generating further employment to Lakhs. These companies are registered in India, they pay taxes and spend at least the mandatory amount on CSR too. All these are legitimate businesses.

Agree, that many of components are still not being manufactured anywhere else in the world but China. Corona has given a wake-up call to the worlds and the world, including India is now working on being self-reliant – Atmanirbhar. But it is going to take some time – for the world. Even Apple and Google products are dependent on Chinese components.

Then there were people advising us on Ariel, Surf, Ghadi and all other FMCG products. Unaware of the fact that Hidustan Uniliver employs 21000 people in India as per 2019 data. It sources all the ingredients of its products from India. And pays licnese fee to its parent Uniliver only 1.4% of its total turnover. With this figures I am not sure we can mark HUL as “Videshi”. Just to avoid long writeups with similar statistics I am avoiding P&G and other FMCG companies.

While these Chinese/other-“foreign” companies have to pay a license fee to the parent in China/home-country but those are mostly in one-digit percentage and the remaining of the revenue goes into funding the business – read salary, infa – electricity, construction, maintenance and CSR and taxes. Some of the non-chinese companies are also listed on Indian stock exchanges. They face Indian audits, they are answerable to its shareholders and have created a huge wealth for their Indian shareholders too.

Before we get paranoid about the “Chinese” phone we need to decide whether we want to punish China or our own countrymen. Unless there are other alternative arrangements already in place, these Lakhs of people will become jobless and lose their livelihood. We will become vocal for local, but it will be possible only when the local options come up to provide “Rozi-Roti” to those working in the so called “videshi” companies.

I am sorry if I am hurting any of your sentiments. I respect your views and thoughts too. This post is just an effort to add an angle to a one dimensional discourse going around.

Jo log ye bol rahe ki chinese company indians ko job de rahi, unhe ye jan lena chahiye ki non chinese company ke pas koi jadu ki chhari nahi hai jo direct consumer ko unka manchaha saman de di.

Unhe bhi india me apne store, service cener, manufacturing plant badhane honge as per demand, which leads to the employement only.

Another editor’s opinion from The Print and The Quint 😛

PS. Everyone knows these things but why are the people frustrated with the Boycott Movement?
And regarding jobs: East India Company also provided jobs to millions of Indians. Praise them as well!

Boycott of what ? Our own people ?

Harming the livelihoods of our own countrymen ?

I am elated by the boycott and will put non-veg and Chinese imports in one category. Both are untouchable for me.

Can we equate Chinese imports and things getting manufactured in India under Chinese brands in the same category ?

Going forward with boycotting made in China we should have 2 categories of stickers on all our products
1. Made in India(means all parts are made in India)❤️🇮🇳
2. Assembled in India(means some parts may be from outside)
So that people can go ahead and buy totally made in India and show support and other companies follow it and convert from assemble in India to totally make in India.

Two days before the first iPhone was to be launched globally, Steve Jobs decided he wanted to change the screen. With 48 hours to go, managers at Apple’s Chengdu factory woke up 20,000 workers, who were staying in dormitories in the middle of the night, gave them a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits, and set them to work. They worked non-stop for 48 hours and managed to change the screen in time for the launch. Do you think we would ever be able to do that in India?

That seems very harsh on the labours, hope they got compensated accordingly.
Sadly exploitation of labour keeps costs down in developing nations and that’s a major reason developed countries use them as their sweatshops and manufacturing hub.
What to do.

China doesn’t depend on us for anything. In 1990, India and China had the same per capita GDP. China liberalised in 1976 and we started in 1991. But they went past us in1986. The differential opened up from 2000, when China’s per capital GDP began to double every four or five years. They touched $1 trillion in 1996, while we touched a trillion in 2000. Today, 20 years later, we are at $2.5 trillion while they are at $13 trillion — brought about by their expansion into the world market, when they began exporting in a big way. Till 1995, we didn’t really import anything from China. And then suddenly, we began importing everything from them. Our growth and [previous] expansion of 8.5 per cent was fueled, in part, by competing with, buying from and learning from China.

Nothing will come of this current call for a ban. If there is no escalation of events at the border, I see Modi taking a trip to China in December. On Thursday, the government awarded a contract for a tunnel on the Meerut-Dehradun Road, to STEC Singapore. It is actually a subsidiary of a Chinese firm called Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company. The Chinese have genuine contempt for us. And right now, they’re probably laughing at us for insisting on a boycott that will never take place.

That was the fault of previous Scamgress governments 😛 (not entirely though, very debatable subject!). They gave UNSC permanent membership to China, didn’t wanted to give damn to US.

Chinese smartphone makers have already built factories and created jobs in India.
India’s emergence as the biggest overseas market for Chinese mobile phone companies is one of the most significant developments in China’s relations with India over the past five years.
Last year, four of the top five best-selling smartphone makers in India were Chinese: Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Realme, according to market research firm IDC. South Korea’s Samsung, the only non-Chinese brand, was the No. 2 seller.

The India sales of those top Chinese smartphone brands totaled more than $16 billion in 2019, according to IDC.
And all of them have manufacturing facilities in India. Doing so allowed the Chinese firms to both embrace Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” program and avoid stiff import tariffs. Xiaomi manufactures 95% of the phones it sells in India locally.
“So if you’re talking about cutting down the sales or shipment for these guys, it also impacts the factories that they have in India,” which will “absolutely” affect Indian jobs. campaigns urging Indians to boycott Chinese goods have happened before, during previous border skirmishes. But they never put a dent in sales of Chinese smartphones in India.
So even though many Indians are vowing to cut off Chinese hardware and software, “I really don’t think it’s going to change their buying decisions at all,”
“They’re so dependent on these Chinese phone ecosystems, there’s hardly any other choices.”

Regarding Xiaomi:

Jain added that almost 95 per cent of Xiaomi’s phones are made in India with 65 per cent of the phone’s value sourced domestically.

Licence fee is only one Part of payment foreign company taking from Indian subsidiary another way which I know are

There are many ways foreign company taking money from India,

Superb !

At least you researched about something !!

Now also check about HUL’s free float market cap and find out who are real owners of the company from the total percentage of ownership. Also find out who can buyback the shares.

The real education is diving into research, not just in testing waters.

Let’s not find reasons to not boycott China. Because in China they will not give you guys the same treatment.
Can’t sell my country, at least can’t give my consent, so that someone will be able to play PubG.

One of the most sensible comment !

You are absolutely right. We shouldn’t find reason to not boycott China. We should build the alternatives. Alternatives are not only about the products but alternative livelihood to the lakhs of our own countrymen. Lets all boycott China and also provide “Rozi-Roti” to the countrymen who are working with these companies in India or somehow dependent on them.

This thread is just to add a dimension to the ongoing boycott-China paranoia without understanding this. In the era of Covid-19, we are already struggling with job losses. We would definitely not make our economy worst by adding a few more lakh jobless.

Let’s #BoycottChinaWithAlternatives

Just mentioning the facts here, let others take what they think from them.

1. East India Company operated at a time when India was ruled by Mughals, Marathas & Nawabs(& many other regional powers).

2. East India Company only ruled India till 1858 after which British govt directly took control of India from the company.

3. When East India Company ruled India, there was no internet, no nuclear weapons, no USA superpower tag & the sun never set in British empire.

The East India Company, a trading firm with its own army, was masterful at manipulating governments for its own profit. It’s the prototype for today’s multinationals.

@bridges I fully agree with you !!!

In a nutshell, What happens with us Indians is that: Whenever Indian Govt. (presently BJP, earlier Congress) is Not capable of doing anything positive, or take strong action on something serious situation, which is in NEWS.

They divert our focus completely, & feed “Nationalism medicine” to us Indians & make us busy, by asking “people” only, to do some work (e.g. thali bajao, diya jalao, phool barsao, army ko praise karo, Apps uninstall karo, Lines mein khade hoke currency change karo)

So We lose our focus, & stop Questioning the Govt., that What did Govt. do to fix a problematic situation ???

What is the PM, HM, MP, MLA, getting paid their “Salary” for ?
if everytime, We People have to do the work ???

Its a simple Diversion tactic !!!
& sadly it works everytime.
