The well-liked Indian battle royale game BGMI inexplicably disappeared from the Google Play Store and App Store on July 28. A year after the Indian Government banned PUBG Mobile and other Chinese applications alleging a "threat to national security," Krafton published BGMI. Now that the game has been removed from both the App Stores and the official download links from the game's website are broken, it appears that BGMI has been added to the list.
Google issued a statement in response to the complaints made by BGMI customers that said in part, "On receipt of the order, following established protocol, we have contacted the impacted developer and have restricted access to the app that was still listed on the Play Store in India." In response to a query over the same problem, Krafton stated: "We are clarifying how BGMI was removed from Google Play and will let you know as we have particular information."
Why is BGMI banned in India?
The most popular Google Play Store and Apple App Store have officially delisted Battlegrounds Mobile India, the most competitive mobile game in India. According to recent sources, the Indian government used Section 69A of the IT Act to enact BGMI's prohibition.
Before PUBG Mobile was banned in India, where data protection and privacy were viewed as important issues, a similar move was taken against the game. Google and Krafton yesterday issued remarks in response to the news
Reports say that the Indian Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology gave orders to take down BGMI in accordance with Section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The latest ban that disappointed millions of gamers might be caused by China's influence over PUBG Mobile and BGMI together.
Google and Krafton’s statements on BGMI ban in India
Google in a statement said, “On receipt of the order, following established process, we have notified the affected developer and have blocked access to the app that remained available on the Play Store in India.”
Meanwhile, Krafton said, “we are clarifying how BGMI was removed from Google Play and will let you know once we get specific information.”
What Is Section 69 (A) It Acts in India?
The ability to give directives "to intercept, monitor or decrypt any information created, sent, received, or stored in any computer resource" is granted to the Central and State governments.
The grounds on which these powers may be exercised are –
- The interests of India's sovereignty or integrity, its defense, or the state's security may all warrant the use of these authorities.
- Friendly ties with other countries.
- For maintaining public order or to stop the encouragement of any crimes that are punishable by law related to them.
- For checking into any offense.
Users who already have the game loaded on their smartphones can continue to play the BGMI even if it has been removed from app stores. There is still no official word on whether the game has been entirely banned in India or merely taken down from app stores.
We have to wait for an official statement by Battleground Mobile India. What are your views on the current news?
