WhatsApp continues to wear the crown as the largest social media messaging app in the world with its 2.6 billion user base. Apart from revenue & growth, a large user base like that also brings massive costs to data storage. Whatsapp users until now could easily backup their unlimited chats to Google Drive. However, the feature would be gone soon. Whatsapp users now can backup their chats to Google Drive only up to 15 GB as Whatsapp ends Google Drive unlimited backup and puts a 15 GB limit.

Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion and since then the messaging app has grown from 400 million users to 2600 million (2.6 billion) in 2023. This makes Whatsapp the largest social media app in the world.

Google Drive Whatsapp Backup Limit

Until now, WhatsApp was offering free unlimited chat backup to Google Drive for users. However, this soon would come to an end. Whatsapp chat backup to Google Drive will now have a limit of up to 15 GB.

Announcing the change Google said "Going forward, WhatsApp backup experience on Android will be in line with how it works on other platforms, with the added benefit of Google's 15 GB of storage available at no charge. We'll continue to work with WhatsApp to provide you with reliable and secure backup support."

A few things to note here are:

  • Whatsapp Backups that haven’t been updated in the last 5 months might be automatically deleted by Google, says Whatsapp

  • Every time you create a new backup, the old backup will be overwritten

  • Your WhatsApp backup is linked to the registered phone number & email address

When they shoved those horrible Channels down our throats in WhatsApp, it started to deteriorate. I don't want them at all on the Status tab.
