After TRAI ordered all telcos to offer “TRAI-Mandated Packs” to users, Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea had to comply by offering voice-only prepaid packs to serve the 220 million feature phone users in India. Airtel was among the first to comply, with ₹185 (28 days), ₹203 (30 days) and ₹206 (calendar month) voice only plans on 18 October 2026. Vodafone Idea soon followed and now that Reliance Jio has made its stock market debut with its ₹30,188 crore IPO, India’s largest-ever public offering, the telco has launched new Jio voice only plans as of 1st November 2026. Read on to know a full list of all the voice-only plans from Jio, Airtel and Vi, a few FAQs and is the Jio voice only plan truly worth it?

Now moving on to a question that many of us would have.

.

Can we Combine Data Packs with Jio Voice Only Plans?

The most likely answer is a yes, we can probably combine data only recharges with Jio’s new voice only plans. Jio’s older voice-only plans or “Value Packs” (₹448 and ₹1,748), when those launched in January 2025, JioCare said users could recharge data-only packs such as ₹11, ₹19, ₹29, ₹49, ₹175, ₹219, ₹289 and ₹359 on top of them. But data booster packs such as ₹69 and ₹139 were initially not allowed to club with value plan recharges.

Here’s the official tweet from Jio:

After user backlash, they obviously had to withdraw this policy. A DesiDime user named “Cheth77” also confirmed that data boosters like Rs.69 pack can be applied on a Jio value pack (voice + 2 OTTs, no data).

For the newer ₹147, ₹177, ₹196 and ₹197 Jio voice only plans launched in November 2026, Jio hasn’t officially confirmed whether a data only pack can be clubbed or not. Users can most likely club data packs with voice only packs. But the important question is, is it worth it? Are Jio voice only packs truly worth it?

.

Are the Jio Voice Only Plans truly a Cheaper and a Better Option?

It depends on whether you need any mobile data at all. On paper, Jio’s new voice-only plans are the cheapest way to keep a Jio number active. The ₹147 plan gives unlimited calls and 300 SMS for 22 days, the lowest price among Jio, Airtel and Vi voice only plans.

Jio is also cheaper than Airtel at perhaps every matching validity, ₹177 vs ₹185 for 28 days, ₹196 vs ₹203 for 30 days, and ₹197 vs ₹206 for a calendar month.

But if you are someone who does need a little bit of data for UPI payments, light browsing and messaging. The voice only plans might not be the cheapest option for you. Jio’s ₹189 plan also lasts 28 days and gives unlimited calls and 300 SMS, plus 2GB of data and JioTV. That’s just ₹12 more than the ₹177 voice-only plan. Stack it now before Jio removes it:)

Jio is also not offering an active validity data-only pack (a data only recharge plan which comes with a validity of your existing base plan) such as the Rs.69 data pack which previously used to offer “active validity” instead of just 7 days now. So users will have to keep doing data recharges as and when they’d need.

How to Recharge for a Vi Voice Only Plan?
  • Open the Vi app or visit the Vi website and enter your prepaid number

  • Find and compare Vi voice-only plans

  • Select a plan of your choice (₹179, ₹185, ₹203, ₹206, ₹470 or ₹1,849) and proceed to pay

  • Vi’s voice-only plans have no data. If you accidentally use mobile data, Vi charges 50 paise per MB, so keep mobile data switched off or add a data pack before going online.

  • Vi’s SMS limit applies across the whole plan, not per day. Once it runs out, each SMS costs ₹1 (local) and ₹1.5 (STD).

Voice-only plans have come a long way since TRAI first made them mandatory in December 2024. Back then, Jio, Airtel and Vi offered only long 84-day and yearly packs, so users had to pay ₹448 or more.

TRAI’s second rule in 2026 changed that as it forced telcos to offer cheaper short plans. Although whether these voice only plans are truly as cheap as users were hoping for, is a bit of a debate:)
