Netflix Password Sharing Banned in India: Goodbye Netflix Account Sharing?

Netflix will soon prevent users from sharing a single account with their friends and family in India. All Indian Netflix users know how convenient it is to just pay for a single Netflix account and then keep using it by taking turns with our friends, right? Unfortunately, that practice of Netflix Password Sharing will soon be discontinued by the brand. In a recent interview, Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, Netflix's CEOs, said that the biggest OTT platform, Netflix plans on adding at least 15 to 20 million new subscribers in 2023. Thus, it is an important decision for the company to stop this trend of multiple users sharing a single Netflix account.

Ban on Netflix Password Sharing in India

As of January 2023, Netflix’s plans range from Rs 149 to Rs 7,788. In India, paying this much for an OTT platform is not that logical for most users. So, the majority of Netflix subscribers in India have been sharing Netflix accounts with their friends and families. Although this works to the benefit of the users, the brand has suffered huge losses because of losing potential subscribers. Realizing the same, Netflix has now decided to stop users from sharing their accounts and passwords in India.

Netflix to Stop Password Sharing in India

Sharing a Netflix account gives huge benefits to users. If a group of users combines to buy a single Netflix subscription, they can divide the cost among themselves and use their Netflix account to the fullest. Up until now, Netflix allowed people living at the same place to share a single account. But it seems like the company now won’t allow that too. Even though users have been complaining about Netflix’s shows getting worse and not being the same as the Best Web Shows the OTT platform once made, its top management has taken a controversial decision that will definitely upset many users. Netflix has decided to prevent its users from sharing their accounts and passwords with their friends and families. This means that anyone who wants to consume content on Netflix will have to pay for it. But wait, there’s more…

Netflix Password Sharing Will Not Be Free Anymore

As suggested by Greg Peters, users may have to pay if they want to share their Netflix accounts with anyone. So even if you do not purchase a new Netflix account, you will still have to pay to share an account with your friends. Most probably, the cost of sharing the same account will be less than buying a whole new subscription, right? Till now, Netflix users in the same family could use a single account, but this will stop soon.

Since Netflix plans on adding 15-20 million new subscribers to its portfolio, it has to somehow attract new users and stop everything that hinders its growth. Keeping everything aside, it would be better if Netflix even gets some better shows and movies as this is the most basic thing that users expect from an OTT platform, don’t they?

Before concluding, let’s take a look at some commonly asked questions about Netflix and its account sharing:

Does Netflix Still Have Password Sharing?

Yes, as of now, you can share your Netflix account and password with your friends/family living under the same roof. But this facility will soon become a paid one. So when the time comes, you may have to pay more if you plan on sharing your Netflix account with anyone.

How Does Netflix Know You Are Sharing Passwords?

According to Netflix, they use their users’ IP addresses, device IDs, and a few other things to figure out if the devices in question are from the same household or not. If all these parameters suggest that multiple users using a single Netflix account live under the same roof, it’s good for the company.

How Much is Netflix Charging for Password Sharing?

Although Netflix hasn’t started charging its Indian users for password sharing yet, it will soon do the same that it has been doing for other countries. The global cost of sharing a Netflix account is $2.99 per month. So when this restriction comes to India, we can expect a similar cost too.

This is everything that we know so far about Netflix and its decision not to allow users to share their accounts. Do you think this is a good decision on the company’s side? Also, do you use Netflix or plan on getting a new account? If yes, then make sure to use the button at the top of the article to get the best deals on Netflix subscription plans.

Coming to the main point ,if they implement paid sharing, they will reduce their number of subscriptions in india for sure.As i mentioned before we four people sharing netflix occasionally watch movies on TV and two of us watch korean series and finished most of them.Without 649 plan we wont get UHD and its not good watching 720p/1080p on a TV and paying 499 for 1080p is Bullxxxx considering hotstar providing @ 1499 yearly with 4 users.I dont even like 720p watching on laptop so 720p is waste,We can easily download 1080p movies in seconds and play them on laptop/TV.

If paid sharing is implemented we wont renew our account and may be one of us may use 720P account @ 199 occasionally. They will lose that 450rs and i think many people are in a similar position

What about a family of 4, all have to purchase standalone subscription ? If it will be, then RIP for Netflix..instead of increasing their subscriber base, they are going to lose 60-70% of their current users

they do payments with bins. They find 13-14 out of 16 digit card numbers, and randomely generate cards and use them to create accounts. It can be done in countries(VPN) where otp is not required.Even if the card doesnt exist it works for trials and if the card exists it becomes illegal. They sell mostly trial accounts.Sometimes they do hacking-I dont know how
