How to Root Redmi 1s
Download the update.zip from the below link. You need to be registered on miui.com
http://en.miui.com/thread-21881-1-...ml
Follow the steps mentioned below to root (copy-pasted the steps from the above URL)
Steps for rooting:
- Download the file update.zip to your PC (because download via browser on phone often is not working properly)
- Connect your Redmi 1S via USB
- Copy the file update.zip to the folder ‘Computer\HM 1S\Internal storage’ (root of internal storage, meaning the top most folder)
- Disconnect your Redmi 1S properly from USB (use ‘Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media’ from USB icon in Windows SysTray)
- Boot into Mi-Recovery (for this launch the Updater app, press the menu/options button and from the menu choose ‘Reboot to recovery mode’)
- In the Mi-recovery select and confirm ‘English’ (or Chinese if you are capable to understand)
- Select and confirm ‘Install update.zip to System’, this will take one second
- Select and confirm ‘Reboot’
- After reboot go to Security → Permission and activate Root permission
- Enjoy your rooted Redmi 1S
How to underclock
- Install No-frills CPU control from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=i...
- Give it Root permissions
- Set the Max clock to 1.402 Ghz
- Set the mini clock freq to 300 Mhz
- Don’t select “apply on boot” for now. If anything goes wrong, u can reboot the device and it will set it to default.
Install CPU spy to monitor the states of the CPU (not required)
Fix for low RAM issue
- Install MinFreeManager (Require Root) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=c...
- Click menu button > Preferences > Mild
- Click Menu button > Apply
List of apps that can be safely Freezed to free up the RAM

I don’t guarantee that the above method helps in solving the heating problem but it is worth the try
Let me know if this helps. Thanks

I believe it fixed it. I haven’t stress tested it but earlier it was heating up with normal usage only but now it is fine
Played Temple Run2 for 5 mins and the temperature rise from 35 to 40-42 degrees and it dropped back to 35 in less than 15 seconds. Which is perfectly fine.
after rooting will i be able to update if the xiaomi comes with any update like kitkat upgrade etc?
Thanks for the tutorial will help dimers

Yes, you will be able to update it. In worse case scenario, you can unroot it. I can confirm on this today evening after rooting my friend’s phone without updating.

Thanks bro… Karma for u…
Bhai What is the advantage of underclocking?
Archie wrote:

It will increase the life of processor and prevent any heating issues, increase battery life etc
Archie wrote:

The processor that is being used in Redmi 1s is overclocked to increase performance. The same processor is being used in other devices at 1.2Ghz.
- Overclocking will increase performance, heat and will decrease battery life
- Under-clocking will decrease performance, heat production and will increase battery life
The keypad is taking too long to pop up …anyway to rectify it…??

I’m using swiftkey and not facing any problem. It do take time for the first time when the device is booted because keyboard is not in the memory at that time and it takes time to load it in the memory. I might be the case that it must be killed in the background due to low ram.
Rooting and freezing unused apps will help in saving some RAM
If I root Redmi, then will I get warranty….?

I have read a lot of threads on en.miui.com and all say that it won’t void warranty. The security app that comes pre-install itself have an option for root permission.
But still I would recommend to un-root it before visiting service center.
RAM issue
ram is flooded most of the times upto 80-90%
with just 3-4 apps i installed
and its showing my internal memory 4gb used (except 1.7gb for system)
it’s showing 2.3 gb for media while there is no media on my device
everythings is on mmc

You have already got it. The question is, will u void it by rooting.
I think No. But as suggested above, u can always unroot it.

I haven’t tried any custom ROM on Redmi 1s yet ! Found one at http://en.miui.com/thread-22893-1-…ml
But I think as Indian Redmi 1s have different hardware, it might not work. Don’t try it until you know what you are doing.

Great thread. I’m pretty sure this would help dimers. I had a couple of questions. 1) I would like to know if CPU underclocking is a permanent process. For example if I set CPU clock speed to 1.4ghz using SETCpu app, what will happen if I uninstall the app or perform factory reset on the phone. Will it stay at 1.4 GHz or go back to original factory settings? 2) I have bought redmi 1s for wife and she is a non technical person. She is complaining about overheating. If I perform the steps you mentioned and set the mobile up for her. Will I need to frequently monitor anything or is it a one time deal?? I would like to set it up for her once and for all and let her use the phone as daily driver without worrying to much about monitoring any stuff. Thanks bro.
Thumbs down to MIUI if you need to do all this to make it work as it should – ie. without lag. Nothing like stock Android or some lean custom ROMs. It would fly on the configuration that the Redmi has. Gotta change to check out the Redmi today, and yes, it certainly lags. And its definitely more that what a device of this specs should. Heating also seems to be on the higher side. Camera performance in low light is identical or even a touch better (strange, since Redmi costs less than half of Mi3!) than Mi3. The Mi3 camera performs really poor in lower light, as I’v illustrated in another thread with comparative pictures.

SetCPU lets you change the max. and min. CPU clock frequency anytime you want. It makes no permanent changes. On a day you’re going to need a longer lasting battery and aren’t going to use the phone for anything other than phonecalls, you can set it especially low. When you want things sped up a bit, you can increase it again. If you don’t want to monitor it, you can chose a middle ground, and set @omsairam’s recommended values- max. 1.4GHz and min. 300Mhz.
Before uninstalling it, just for surety, set the clock frequency back to default, although I think uninstalling SetCPU sets it back to default anyway.
I haven’t used SetCPU on the Redmi 1S yet (haven’t received my order yet), but I’ve used it on a previous phone.
BTW, it also has an undervolt feature for phones that support it. Has anyone tried it out on the Redmi 1S? Does it cool down the phone further?

Well, The problem is that people are not ready to accept that its a 6k phone. Everyone is expecting top performance from it since when people remember xiaomi they think of Mi3. Redmi 1s will never be able to deliver the performance of an Mi3.
If we can spend a few hours to tweak the phone with some of the things OP mentioned then I’m pretty sure most of the issues including overheating would be fixed. Just take one look at the redmi 1s thread in Hot deals section. Most of the people are either cancelling or returning the order instead of just waiting for Xiaomi to release an update to fix the issue. I simply don’t understand why people should be in a haste to return the phone when flipkart is offering 30 days return period.
I’m not going to give up on this phone yet.
@Omsairam: Very informative guide. Thanks
My mom is receiving her Redmi 1S today, if she complains about it heating, I’ll have to either guide her through rooting and underclocking it or ask my cousin to do it for her (I live away from home right now). Worst case scenario, she’ll have to send me the phone for underclocking it
If the heat issue is a problem only on selected units, is it purely because of the stock overclocked processor? Is Xiaomi likely to release a firmware update which underclocks the phone? Since they’ve advertised it as a 1.6GHz device, it might be a PR problem if they underclock it via firmware update.

No, It isn’t a permanent process.
SetCPU or any other app that underclock/overclocks the CPU adds a script at "/system/etc/init.d/ " folder location.
You can check using “ES File explorer”. Factory reset will delete it but not sure about uninstalling but you can use “ES File explorer” to goto its location and manually delete it.

I too bought it for my dad. I’m sure it won’t cause any problem but to be on safer side you can monitor it for the first few days.

Camera is too good.
I have seen a detail comparison of the three and this is what i have observed:
Redmi 1s > MI3 > Redmi Note
Redmi 1s have the best camera out of the three
@mr_n I haven’t undervolted it yet and I won’t even do it on Redmi 1s because it makes the device unstable. Although I have undervolted my galaxy s2
Thanks bro… Is the heating problem mitigated by this in any way?
