Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao to decide on COVID lockdown soon

Will the State government impose a lockdown from the first week of May? In the wake of a steep increase in COVID-19 cases in the State, people, especially those from middle and lower middle classes, are inquiring whether the State is heading towards a lockdown. The word lockdown has become a buzzword among citizens.

However, sources ruled out any possibility of the government opting for a total shutdown. The government might declare containment zones, but not a complete lockdown, said the sources.

Clarity on whether the government would impose a lockdown, or declare containment zones, or continue the existing night curfew will emerge only at a high level meeting to be convened by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao this week.

The Central government, while declaring that lockdown should be the last resort, had asked the States to evolve their own COVID-19 management strategy as per the local situations.

In the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Maharashtra, complete lockdowns have been imposed. Some parts of the State, like Jagitial, are reporting a high number of cases as they border Maharashtra. However, it remains to be seen how the State government manages the pandemic post April 30.

The current orders pertaining to night curfew will be in force till April 30. The Chief Minister, who had tested positive for the virus on April 19, is expected to visit Yashoda Hospital on Tuesday for a health check-up. Once he tests negative, he will conduct a review on COVID-19 either on Wednesday or Thursday.

Citizens hold their breath for CM move

During the review, he is expected to take decisions on vaccination and on continuation of the night curfew. There are apprehensions among citizens on whether the government would impose a lockdown in the State, especially after Karnataka and Maharashtra imposed it. Rao, after taking stock of the situation, is expected to announce a decision in this regard.

Lockdown crucial, else might lose 200-300 lives each day: Goa Health Minister.

Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that a lockdown in the state was crucial to save lives as the state reported its highest single-day Covid toll of 38 on Monday.

“In my interaction with experts, I have been told that we might lose 200-300 more lives per day in the next 10 days, the situation is really grim. We are doing our best to save lives. I am confident that Hon’ble CM will take our request into consideration on priority,” Rane wrote on Twitter.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, however, said that a decision on imposing a lockdown had not been taken yet. He, however, added that stricter curbs on gatherings may be considered.

Goa has imposed a night curfew till April 30 and imposed Section 144 that prohibits gathering of more than five people. The state has also limited the number of people at weddings and funerals to 50 and 20 respectively.

Rane said that he will be holding an emergency meeting with the Chief Minister in view of the spike in cases. “I am confident that Hon’ble CM will support us on this and we are able to save precious lives,” he wrote on Twitter.

Rane said that a lockdown on the lines of that in Maharashtra and Karnataka was the need of the hour. “As much as economic activities are important, it is also important to save lives with stricter measures. Perhaps a lockdown may break the chain. We need strict measures and SOPs along with a lockdown for 30 days,” he added.
