Airtel Xstream AirFiber Launched in India: 5G Made More Accessible

With the Airtel Xstream AirFiber launch, it would be easier for all users to enjoy high internet speeds in the comfort of their homes. It is a plug-and-play device based on the newer Wi-Fi 6 technology. The wireless broadband connection will also offer better indoor range and compatibility with up to 64 devices at a time. Our dimer friend Jarvis has explained how the Airtel Xstream AirFiber works in more detail here.

For the launch of the Airtel Xstream AirFiber, the director of Bharti Airtel, Mr. Shashwat Sharma, said “India has seen the rapid growth of home broadband but there still remain areas with no access to high-speed internet at home due to the physical challenges of laying fiber in a country the size of India. While fiber to the home will always define the best experience of Wi-Fi at home, AirFiber helps bridge the experience gap for everyone else. Today, we are delighted to launch Xstream AirFiber for consumers in Delhi and Mumbai with a pan-India rollout planned soon.

would have been great if existing SIM and plan could be used in this device

But using an existing SIM card and plan might hinder the internet speed, I believe. Broadband internet has always been better and faster and there's a reason why people choose Fiber connection over just using a small router, like Jio's portable router, or hotspot from their other devices.

my existing Airtel Fiber shows 5G options too, but don't see any difference in the speed if I select that wifi option.

This device also uses a SIM - only special series. The speed is dependent upon the device, not the SIM. SIM based Routers with 2CA like TPlink MR600 gives 2-3 times better speeds than Jio-fi with same Jio SIM at same location.

Maybe you can contact your service provider and ask them for guidance.

10. Is an Airtel mobile plan needed to get Airtel Xstream AirFiber connection?
You don’t need an Airtel mobile connection. Xstream Air Fiber comes with a special SIM which can be bought from select stores in Delhi and Mumbai

I read that already...but it doesn't mention a SIM-only series that's different from the normal one. Of course, the AirFiber would come with a SIM card, that's only natural.

All "special SIM" are different from regular SIMs.
Airtel special SIMs are specific purpose SIMs that cannot be used for regular calls etc or in normal devices.

Yes
I'd say it's more like combining a fiber broadband's internet speeds with a smartphone's hotspot connectivity.

What will happen if I buy it and take it to an area where there is no 5g coverage?

The result will be the same as a person going to space looking for oxygen, without oxygen.

Yes...that's what Airtel has promised.

If that is the case, then it is very easy for me to switch provided the signal is good at my installation. Add airtel axis card to the portfolio and can easily get 25% CBs on it.

Yup, but Airtel will provide its AirFiber services only in Delhi and Mumbai for now. It would take some time for other states/cities to get covered. Do you stay in Mumbai or Delhi?

@Sahil_Jain no. I live in Bangalore. I think it may expand to here in another 6 months.

I think it will get there sooner since Bangalore is an IT Hub.

What I understood with the services is many new things are first targeted in Mumbai. May be the demand is high and they have some room to expand. Bangalore being IT hub, people are already settled for some best connections and we don't switch easily.

Yes, that's true.
Whenever a brand comes up with a new product, its first guinea pig is mostly Mumbai, because of its high population that also has many, seriously many millionaires who can make a good target customer base.

Yeah... nobody wants to take the risk of an half baked  service in bangalore.

>> high population

high population density definitely  demands more traffic.

I think you are talking about WiFi 5GHz frequency, which some call 5G, while this article is about Cellular 5G, which is the 5th generation of cellular connectivity.

Can you please elaborate on the same? I think it's something that I might not know of and it would be helpful for all of us.

Sorry for the late reply, busy week.

If you have a 1000+ mbps Wi-Fi router then it will most likely have two connection lights, if not more. One for 2.4G and another for 5G. This 5G is not the same as cellular 5G. This one signifies the frequency band on which the connection is operating. In simpler words, it is not 5G, more like 5GHz. Many people these days confuse it with the cellular 5G which operators like Jio and Airtel launched not too long ago.
Cellular networks have generations like first generation then 2G, 3G, 4G, etc. The G here signifies generation. There are generations in between too but that is beyond the scope of this post. 😄
To summarize, Wi-Fi 5G is 5GHz frequency while cellular 5G is 5th generation.
