RBI outlines bank holidays in 3 different categories and approx 19 regions such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, New Delhi, etc. Many state governments such as Odisha, Punjab & Haryana, Kerala, and Mizoram release their own holiday calendar at the start of the year for the general public to be aware of any upcoming holidays in 2024 or bank holidays. Recently, the government seem to have increased the interest rate for the Sukanya Samridhi Scheme by 20 basis points from 8% to 8.2%. This is only applicable for January to March quarter 2024.

​For those who file income tax, the 7th of February is generally the due date for the deposit of Tax deducted/collected for January 2024.

March brings some important financial deadlines such as March 31st being the last date to file your tax savings exercise for 2023-2024 including making any eligible investments like ELLS mutual funds, Life Insurance Premium, PPF under section 80C. Note that it is also the last date to file any remaining updated file return with 25% penalty charges as opposed to 50% in the next month.

• National Holidays in April 2024🎈: None, but several states will have holiday on Gudi Padwa (9th), Ramzan Id (10th-11th), Shree Ram Navami (17th) and Mahavir Jayanti (21st)

• Long Weekend in April 2024 🏖️: There are two long weekends possible in April 2024 if you can take leave on April 8th (Monday) since April 7th is Sunday, April 8th (leave), April 9th (Gudi Padwa). The other long weekend can be from April 11th (Ramzan) if you take a leave on April 12th (Friday), April 13th (2nd Saturday) and April 14th is Sunday.

April is the beginning of a new financial year for banks and businesses. April 30 is the due date for deposit of TDS under sections 192, 194A, 194D and 194H for the period January 2023 to March 2023.

• National Holidays in May 2024🎈: None but several states will celebrate gazetted holiday on 1st May which is international labour day as well as optional holiday on 23rd May on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

• Long Weekend in May 2024 🏖️: There are no long weekends in May 2024 unless you take 1 day floater leave on 23rd May on the occasion of Buddha Purnima and 1-day leave on 24th May, Friday. Since the following day, 25th May is a 4th Saturday bank holiday and next of course a Sunday.

Holidays in May 2024 can be seen on 1st May (Labour Day), 23rd May (Buddha Purnima) as well as some regional holidays like the birthday of Rabindranath Tagore (8th May) and 16th May as state day in Sikkim.

15 June is generally the due date for collecting TDS certificates of tax deducted at source during the Financial Year 2023-24. These certificates help the IT department understand how much tax has been deducted by an employer/entity and when it was submitted.

Also as mentioned above, last year SGB were issued in June so we can expect something similar this year too.

August 31st is the last date for filing challan statements for tax deducted under sections 194-IA, 194-IB, 194M and 194S for July 2024. These are especially important if you trade into virtual digital assets like cryptocurrencies or NEFT, pay rent, purchase a property (except agricultural land) etc.

There are no national holidays in September 2024. However several states will have a holiday on 7th September on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and 16th September on the occasion of Prophet Mohammad’s birthday.

30 September 2024 - ​​​Quarterly statement of TCS deposited for the quarter ending June 30, 2024

• Major occasion in October 2024 🎉: Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October), Dussehra (12th October), Durga Ashtami (11th October), Karwa Chauth (20th October)

• National Holidays in October 2024🎈: Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October), Diwali (31st October)

• Long Weekend in October 2024 🏖️: Several states like West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Tamil Nadu are having a holiday either on 11th October, Friday (Dussehra) or the next day, 12th October (Dussehra) for Maharashtra, New Delhi, etc. Follows a Sunday (13th October) and the 14th of October is a holiday in Sikkim. So there can be at least one long weekend in October 2024 depending on which state you are from.

There is a national holiday in October 2024 at the beginning of the month which is Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October) followed by a holiday on Dussehra, 11th/12th October and a celebration of Diwali on 31st October 2024.

There is going to be a holiday in November 2024 on 1st November (Diwali), 15th November (floating holiday on Guru Nanak Jayanti)

30th November 2024 is the last date to file ITR for FY 2023-24 for those taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited and have international or specified domestic transactions.
