Shein is to relaunch in India soon. The top fashion e-commerce giant, Shein was banned in India back in 2020 along with other Chinese apps due to India-China border tensions. However, now the Government of India has approved the partnership between Shein and Reliance Retail and we may soon get to see Shein back in India with its affordable and trendy fashion wear for women and men.

Shein with Reliance Retail may make a comeback to India most likely on the Ajio platform as well as set up offline Shein stores in India.
Why Was Shein Banned?
Shein was banned along with 100+ other Chinese apps in India in 2020 because it supposedly posed a threat to the nation’s security as the government found “Chinese links” associated with these apps.
However, Shein was free to sell its products via third-party vendors or merchants as it is not covered under the 69A Section.
Until 2021, Shein was selling some of its products on Amazon India. Though that seems to have been discontinued in the last 2 years.
Is Shein unbanned in India now?
Shein has finally received the Indian government’s approval to bring its business back to India upon certain requisites such as sourcing fabrics for its global manufacturing operations from India as part of the Reliance and Shein partnership.
The Chinese fashion store’s primary sources for products are the US, India, Brazil, and Australia currently. However, US Lawmakers are urging Shein to disclose its labor practices ahead of its initial public offering in the US.
Shein’s IPO as per reports is said to arrive anytime soon later this year, expectedly by the year 2024.
The brand was founded in China in 2008 by Chris Xu, a marketing specialist and the fashion e-commerce giant has grown to become one the world’s largest fashion retailers with more than $100 billion valuation.
Shein raised $2 billion in its latest fundraising round which was held this month, May 2023. Shein projects its sales will more than double to nearly $60 billion by the year 2025.
This is despite a fall in its valuation as compared to the previous year.
The partnership between Reliance Jio and Shein will help Reliance Jio benefit from Shein’s massive supply chain and will help Shein tap into the Indian market.
It all looks bright for Shein to enter back in India. Though only time could tell when the official announcement would appear.
