Why do their SIMs just stop working? You are forced to take a replacement sim by paying ₹50 and the added nuisance of going to the shop, being offline etc!
Any idea why this happens only with Airtel?

Well known issue. I shared my experience in family recently but can't find the thread.
Can see some post/s (of yours) mentioning postpaid connections, re-issue of replacement SIMs.
Around 2018 , I Have iphone 5s , Suddenly Signals Stopped... Went To Airtel Store , All Users With iphone 5s Coming And Going. I Realised Problem Is Not In Sim.
I Thought Its Time To Change Phone , Luckily Airtel Fixed The Problem In 2 Days , Then Again Signals Coming.
Not problem with sim. Then what was the issue?
Why do some purchase phones costing 150 thousand or cars costing millions of USDollars too? Because they can.
Why do some 🧔🏻♂fakeers say flabbergasting gobbledygook? Because they can and they know they can go almost scot-free even after that.

For physical SIMs, it has been a while since government/s noted 'security concerns' in the operators/vendors importing foreign made IC/chips in those SIMs (with some ROM data already flashed in them) and insisted on indigenisation.
Not necessarily so, but that (lack of proper designing or quality control) could be one of the reasons. It could also be the 'let us try to recoup the donation funds from our paying customers' software in their servers, cell sites/towers or switches which might be triggering a 'not registered on network' error on random connections.
Their prices are on the higher Side also. But have to keep incase Jio doesnt work. .
Need another Network Operator from Tata or Adani.
There was a news Tata will launch in collaboration with BSNL. IS THAT REAAAL ?
WAITING FOR THAT DAY
CHORTEL - BAMBANI is forcing us to pay even if we
Use their internet or not use, same prices .
Since you know a lot (no pun intended )
Do you think there is any chance of Adani buying Vi?
That would improve it to compete the duopoly
Because it's chor-tel.
It happened with me too..
