Air India brings “Plan Now, Pay Later” Fare Lock Feature

Air India on June 5th announced on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle its brand new Fare Lock feature which lets passengers reserve a fare price for 48 hours with a “fixed, nominal” fee

Announcing the feature, Air India wrote “Plan now, pay later! With Air India's Fare Lock, enjoy the convenience of securing your fare for a minimal fee starting at ₹500*/USD 10* and confirming your booking within 48 hours. Available for flights scheduled at least 10 days from the booking date.”

What is the Air India Fare Lock Feature?

In simple words, the Air India fare lock feature can be used to reserve the fare price of a flight for 48 hours. Thus, the fare lock fee would be charged additionally on top of your ticket price. Depending on your flight & travel destination, the price starts from ₹500 or $10 and currently, it is only available for flights scheduled at least 10 days from the booking date.



What is the Air India Fare Lock Fee Charges?

The Air India fare lock fee is ₹500 or $10. Air India claims it to be a fixed fee so it would likely remain the same for all flights across all destinations. At the time of booking, customers who use the fare lock feature only need to pay the fare lock fee upfront (₹500). The actual booking amount of the flight would need to be paid once the fare lock time duration has ended (48 hours).


Is the Air India Fare Lock Fee Refundable?

No, the Air India fare lock is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted in the booking amount, i.e. it needs to be paid separately.

How does the Fare Lock feature work in Air India flights?

Here’s a simple example for you to understand how the Air India fare lock feature works, when the passenger customer has to pay and what are the charges of it:

Example:

  • Imagine this, you book a flight from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (BOM) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi Airport)

  • To use the Air India fare lock feature, you need to book a flight scheduled at least 10 days from the booking date (booking date means the day when you are booking a flight, not when you need to catch your flight)

  • Once done, you can enable to “Fare Lock” option

  • Once enabled, you will now need to pay ₹500 or $10 to lock the booking price

  • The actual flight booking amount will need to be paid once the fare lock time duration ends (48 hours)

  • Note that the fare lock fee is not refundable so be sure to only lock the price if you are confident the price wouldn’t go any lower.
