What is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite-based internet service provided by SpaceX. Rather than relying on optic fibers and cables and cellular towers, Starlink beams the internet from space. Thus, the company promises 99.99% uptime and weather resilience, useful in country-side areas or rural areas and lesser developed areas in urban cities.
Elon Musk in a recent podcast interview also said that Starlink internet will continue to work even if the cables are cut since Starlink relies on a fleet of satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO), connected to each other via laser links, creating what Musk described as a “laser mesh.” That means data can hop between satellites instead of needing fiber-optic lines on the ground.

Starlink Launch Date in India: What we know so far?
In India, Starlink received its Unified License from India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in July 2025. This license is valid for the next 5 years. Thus, it's confirmed that Starlink is launching in India soon. Communications Minister of India, Jyotiradtiya Scindia said in an interview, Elon Musk’s StarLink is the 3rd company to get licence to begin satellite services in India, after OneWeb and Reliance. Despite the progress Starlink has made, nationwide launch timelines are still unannounced.
Some people are also considering Starlink as a National Security threat, raising concerns of data safety & that the US can use Starlink to destabilize Bharat and pressurize us. Elon Musk himself has said that Starlink is not suited for India’s crowded metro cities and will perform better in under-served areas.
Reliance is also testing waters with satellite internet service. Remember the Reliance JioSpaceFiber, the company showcased in India Mobile Congress 2023?
